What a beautiful dance here. I feel like Eric’s intuition knew the answer from the very beginning but Carl really opened up the space for Eric to tap into that intuition and trust it. Bravo 👏🏼

I recently passed my board exam and start coaching at a functional medicine office in three months. This is how I want to coach clients. I’ve been struggling to get a grip on my approach. Just listening gave me a wave of direction and relief. You guys rock.

This is awesome.. the coachee is profound himself, and the coach is on the another level with his intuitiveness and how he places his questions perfectly in the moment

This was amazing! I love how Carl used a vagueness or an open ended approach in some of his questioning which allowed Eric the space to fill in the blanks with himself. Questions that didn't lead Eric to a conclusions but let Eric come to his own. Then mentioning "energy and flow". Eric is a very energetic guy. He "gets it". Carl knows this and opens up that subject. Eric's eyes always up and searching indicates he is very visual. He's seeing the possibilities. Tapping on his cheek while listening to his internal voice, hoping the judge is not harsh. And it wasn't. Great session! Thank you!

Thank you for taking the time to watch the coaching session and sharing your positive feedback. We're glad to hear that you found the open-ended questioning approach effective and that it allowed Eric to come to his own conclusions. As you noted, energy and flow are important elements in coaching, and we're pleased that Carl was able to tap into Eric's strengths and help him see the possibilities. We appreciate your kind words and thank you for being a part of our coaching community.

I've shared this video during mentoring sessions with coach-clients about half-dozen times now. It's a fantastic demonstration of coaching the person, not the problem, as well as creating emotional safety. The conversation it spurs with my clients leads to rich and rewarding learning and often more than one "ah ha!" moment. Thanks to GMU for granting permission for this session to be shared so that we can all learn from Carl's masterful coaching and Eric's vulnerability, and thanks to both of them for agreeing to share the recording in the first place. Gratitude to inviteChange for posting it here!

Just wanted to make a list of all the questions I heard during this, thought I might as well post them in case its useful for others: 1. Where would you like to be at the end of the session today? 2. (Why is this meaningful?) *answered previously 3. How do you know clarity for yourself? What is that experience like for you? 4. Where do you feel the flow? 5. What have you been tapping into thus far in grasping for that clarity? 6. What meaning are you making around this trip? 7. This is bigger than making a decision on a family vacation, right? 8. What values are you wrestling with as you think about going vs. not going? 9. What had you curious about the shoulds and maybes around this decision? 10. Who else sits on your internal board of advisors? 11. If you decided not to go, what would you want/choose to make it mean? 12. What would you fill that void with? 13. What are you noticing about energy and flow as you’re talking about it? 14. Whats that Judge doing right now? 15. How are you feeling in your forehead? 16. As you leave this session today, what do you do with this clarity? What are your next steps? 17. Any other support you need in this?

Excellent session. Loved the flow and coaching presence. Thanks so much Carl, your coaching style is great. And really appreciate Eric sharing this personal experience. I did see a clear change of energy from confusion, conflict and sadness to lightness at the end of the session. However it got me wondering if further digging below the surface / peeling of the onion was needed in this case. There was a comment about playing it safe, and maybe digging further along those lines could've uncovered more?

Thank you for your comment and for sharing your observations on the coaching session. We appreciate your attention to detail and your willingness to explore the nuances of the coaching process. It's almost always possible to go deeper in coaching. While there may have been more to uncover, it's ultimately up to the client to decide how deep they want to go. As coaches, our role is to support our clients in their journey, and to help them achieve their goals in a way that feels authentic and aligned with their values. i would have asked Eric what would have happened if he really had the extra money to the trip, cause if feels that there is a scarcity based mentality behind the money holding him back to taking that trip. Probably, just probably is the stone in his shoe was "its too expensive, i dont wnat to spend that money right now, i ll do it in the future when my finances are stronger". End of the story. Most of people cant face those simple facts nowadays and make deeper excuses to justifify their thoughts or actions.

Good point. There did sound to be something about the money when it was initially broached, and cost was broached again later in the discussion as well.
