This is episode #1 to Not Right Music’s new series “Community Service.”
Ideas on expanding your unconventional music throughout your community and how to organize local music gatherings and other events.
With special guests: Chie Mukai, Ryo (Haruka Bird), & Nobunaga Ken
Get off the internet, go outside, and start something in your community!
Something that involves the kind of music you love.
Something that will educate the people around you.
Something that will, in the long run, benefit you more than you could imagine!
I often hear musicians complain that there’s nothing going on in their town and that they have no chance to play the music they like. To which I always respond,
“If what you want doesn’t exist - then you must build it.”
There is no excuse. It doesn’t matter your age, music ability, if you’re an introvert, disabled, nothing. I’ve seen all kinds of people actually build something meaningful in their community that relates to the music they love. You can do it to. This video will help you out.

Yes there is a whole sub world out there just waiting for us. As for me, I'm going to hold gathering and invite a lot of "Salary People" to attend and participate.

"Salary People" would be a nice title for such a gathering. I might even dress up in a suit and tie and attend!

Very inspiring and well done video Marcus! But it made me feel like my town is so boring! I'd love to do this kind of thing and have as many people as I can participate instead of just me and my small group of friends. Maybe this video will push me! Keep them coming. I'm always surprised by the uniqueness of your topics

Oh man I needed this! It's been my dream to start something like a gathering with music and other arts. It just always seems like so much work. But your right theres no excuse not to at least try. My town is so small and conservative I'm afraid even if I did pull it off some one would eventually call the cops!

If you're not doing anything illegal you should have no problems. Work with what you got. I don't know what kind of music you're into but maybe you can start by doing workshops, include kids. For example, if you're into improv you can have workshops about making music instruments out of junk, then conduct a jam session. Build up from there.

i 'gathered' kind of a crowdsourced exhibition once, the call was: "bring your favourite things you made yourself!". for good measure i added also "and can be shown to children". i'm not into arts much, i had just a photo and a weird clay head ;) and i certainly wouldn't call that event a success, but it Happened. some stuff was unconventional some was conservative - but all kind of honest. maybe there is a way to express things together with cop-callers.

@odolany - Did you play any music games with various things people brought? :)

These are all very good and logical tidbits of advice and I strongly agree with the basic DIY premise you expound. I, myself, do a collaborative drone event every few months in my local area. (Feel free to check it out here. kzbin.info/aero/PLPfqB2gf8EijuPcyy-TYSqXlrU580Pmzo ) I don't do much beyond creating a facebook page for the event, and the space is kindly donated free-of-charge by a local artists coop space. We're usually guaranteed of having more performers than spectators but that is fine. I think the event has strengthened bonds between improvisationalists in the area and we've been having some folks come from other states more recently. And sometimes the spectators can be really surprising. Anything from an annoyingly chatty homeless dude to a middle-aged couple on a date. One of my favorite experiences was, after an amazing two-hour long performance by the only four people who showed up, we looked up to see our one audience member who had appeared as if out of nowhere. We gave *him* a round of applause.

Yeah man, I love hearing your drone sessions. What you do is exactly what I'm talking about. Love the audience story! I've had similar experiences. More people need to do this kind of thing. It boggles my mind why musicians shy away from it.
