Conveying sadness & hurt with just facial expressions. Eddie Murphy in fine form here as a dramatic actor. His supporting actor Oscar nomination was well deserved.

I understand. You create your best work yet, it's free and honest, but that doesn't "sell". Truth isn't for sale. thank goodness for the expanse of the Internet these days. Having the ability to show your art and managing it on your own terms has probably saved more than few folks from deciding to OD after a major rejection of the truest expression of their self. It is soul crushing to go through and can slide you right into hell.

The "music suppose to sell" is a throw away line. The issue here is control through power, that was Curtis's whole mo through the whole flick. Curtis did not care about Jimmy, just like the CBC don't care about Black people.
@robjohnson6815
@robjohnson6815 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with almost everything you just said, except the throw away line part. It was meant to disarm any argument and reestablish dominance. Remember, Curtis is the "expert".

Yeah. He didn't care about anyone. Not even his own wife. He only acted like he wanted Effie. Because she wasn't willing to sing backup, and the rest of the group wouldn't join. Unless Effie agreed to be a part of the group. He only acted like he was interested in Jimmy initially. Because he wanted his name and star power to get them where he wanted to be fast. He wanted Deana because he knew she would look good on his arms. He wanted her as a form of a trophy wife. Plus, he knew her beauty would help him excel in the music industry as well. He only wanted old boy because he needed him to write hits initially. Every one of them, with the exception of Jimmy and Sharon Leal, got what they gave to Effie. They reaped what they sowed. Because they shouldn't have went a long with Curtis when he did what he did.

That particular scene to me was a little bit weird. Because typically when people want to shoot up, they'll do it in private. He just pulled his tools out right there in front of people who didn't get high and prepared to fire up. That just struck me as kind of odd.

It’s weird, especially on Christmas. But it’s just for dramatic cinematic purposes. It’s showing his lack of care now that not only his song won’t release, but the message too. So “why not?”

Irami I really love what you did by showing this clip. It gave us a lot to think about. The comment describing Vietnam as a pointless war was interesting. And I would assume the Jamie Fox character was pro war/ American Impearalism.
@COrraThereal0ne
@COrraThereal0ne 2 жыл бұрын
Not nesecaryily, Jamie foxx represents the capitalist side of the music industry that doesn't care if an artist actually wants to make music but that they (by nature of needing to make money for the music studio under contract) the artist are forced into abandoning what they want to make artistically are forced into styles of music that steers closer to whiteness.

Irami, are you going to have a discussion about this? I'm not sure what point are you trying to make? If it's because he wasn't affirmed then there's a reason for him going to drugs - then - all of us have reason to do it. And drugs doesn't solve anything - only makes matters worse. Looking forward to your discussion today.
