Ion 1950's Futuristic Flying Wing - Pt14: Setting Up - Airfield Ready!! - By O.F.W. (Peter) Fisher

The Ion Mk 20 is a great looking flying wing from 1957, designed by O.F.W. Fisher and English designer and owner of Performance Kits. He was often known as Peter Fisher. The Ion has a 33" wingspan and was originally a free flight model powered by a Frog 80 diesel engine, however in this build it will be converted to 2 channel RC. The original design had elevons, used to give some reflex to the wing and they could be used to adjust the trim. In this build series these elevons will be servor controlled.

Really nice job on finishing the model. The color scheme looks really good. As for test flying and finding the best amount of deflection on the elevators, you might want to make a chuck glider. It can be smaller from balsa or you could probably do one the same size of the model using poster/foam board. Just balance it the same and you can then dial in the amount of reflex with the elevators. Cost is low and it can take the punishment of testing before applying the lessons learned to the model

What a great project - and you've built and finished it beautifully. The tissue looks superb. Full marks, too, Mark, for fitting it with an engine and not opting for (yawn...) an electric motor. 10:00 - Would the model stay cleaner if the end of the exhaust pipe were cut horizontally so as to blow upwards and not backwards, or won't it make much difference with a burbling diesel? I must admit that when I use moulded mini-hinges, I don't peg them in place. I used to peg the old plain mylar sheet hinges because there was nothing else to hold them, but with the thicker moulded ones I just enlarge their existing holes to about 4mm and glue them into their slots with ordinary white PVA. A few torture tests on dummy parts showed that, as long as plenty of glue gets carried into each hole, the hinges stay put. The PVA forms a sort-of micro-peg in each hole. Your solution is certainly very neat, though, and is definitely secure. I'm looking forward to seeing the model's flight tests, and hope you can find some nice long grass for those initial glides. I'm lucky in that my site (in West Yorkshire) is right next to a cornfield (I mean 'corn' in the UK sense, i.e. wheat, barley or rye, not USA-style 'sweetcorn'/maize). Good luck!
