The Bitchin' Fast laptop poster says "P6 chip: 3X Pentium speed!" which is a nod to the 1995 movie 'Hackers' when Dade sneaks into Kate's bedroom to try out her new laptop and Kate finds him. He comments about how fast the computer is, and she says "P6 chip. Triple the speed of the Pentium."

Voxel objects aren't new for Ion Fury, they were supported by the Build engine back in the day. They didn't quite make it in time for Duke 3D, but were used in Blood the following year.

@The_Real_DCT
@The_Real_DCT 3 жыл бұрын
@@djrkzr because back then(when Duke Nukem Forever was in early development) it was a arms race to have the most advanced engine on the block mostly due to Id cranking out a new tech pushing engine every new game and you had Epic about to come along with the Unreal engine. So if you wanted to get by you had to be up to snuff engine wise but since it was still the early days of FPS's ideas were changing too because it wasn't long before you had stuff like Deus Ex and Half life changing how a First person shooter plays and is designed. In short Duke Nukem Forever was a victim of trying to be cutting edge in a period of rapid change in the genre.

Build Engine games always have that very specific 'crisp' feeling. The amount of detail and all the little breakable objects and colorful sprites on the walls really make those games pop. Other 2.5D games like Doom had this as well, but games on the Build Engine always had that little extra amount of detail. When we first stepped into 3D it felt like a step back because textures were blurry or very low res. Just compare the amazing crisp, colorful graphics of HEXEN to the blurry, brown mess that was HEXEN2.

9:29 if you're interested: the technique for faking the look up/down is called Y-Shearing as the viewport is translated in a screen-space vertical shear, rather than a perspective 3D tilt, to cheat a pseudo look up/down. Bungie's Marathon on the Mac was the first FPS game to do this.

Yeah, you just offset Y coordinate of a thing by your view angle multiplied by distance to that thing. Totally makes sense to do this, as original "software" renderer, as far as I know, rendered in columns - so a proper 3D tilt would result in a single column covering geometry at an angle, and maybe even having to draw stuff behind!

@yaosio
@yaosio 5 жыл бұрын
They can't guarantee the load will always be that fast unfortunately, so it makes sense to put "loading" there. Real Gamers would also rage if they didn't know it was loading and there was that momentary pause to load. It's too bad they couldn't add a streaming load, but that would require a lot of work since the engine doesn't already support it.

It took me some time to realize that the problem is not me, but the design of the "corridor levels" combined with the "cover shooting" mechanic. I want to run around the level, dodge projectiles and explore at my own pace. This game announcement made my day. I hope, there will be a Switch version of it soon.

I like the point about being more connected to the environment. The simpler map building and visual methods present a set of rules and constraints to the player. The original Doom is a good example of this, where the player can develop an understanding of how their environment is built, and what can and can't happen, even without the technical knowledge. My parents became fans of PlayStation Doom in the 90s, and they quickly learned how triggers work, how to spot them, how to find secrets, etc.

I'm totally on the same page with you on the notion that the old map-based level design creates a better connection between player and environment, compared to the modern, "for dummies" linear design. Having to navigate complex, interactive spaces makes them feel more real. Sometimes the realism/reality of things depends not on the things themselves (resolution, detail...) but on the relationship that you create with them.

3:25 to 3:45 Yep, yep, yep. This is so damn true. I'm a long-time map-maker (15+ years as a hobby) with UnrealEd, CS:Source's Hammer, and games programmer. UnrealEd - the first version of it - was the editor used to make the original Unreal and UT, as well as maps for the original Deus Ex, which is where I started. Around 2005 was when BSP- and sector-based maps/engines disappeared, in favor of open-world engines. In open-world engines, essentially all the mapper can do is plop down prefabricated meshes to create the level, and adjust the terrain mesh. Obviously this opens up new possibilities, but something special is also lost. In BSP-/sector-based engines, the map's aesthetic and the map's defined play area are much more intimately related. I believe this is partly because, because of the nature of the engine, the mapper is conscious (or perhaps aware, subconsciously) of how the collision system behaves, such that every surface in the level is important. So, every horizontal surface

Tracker music is actually quite era-appropriate. EPIC Megagames have had a super long love relationship with the format which lasted from Epic Pinball to Unreal Tournament. I understand why most 3D titles avoided it though. On a 486, mixing down the tracks adds up to quite a bit of performance impact, and not everyone has an Advanced Gravis Ultrasound.

While there were a number of good Build games released back then, I always felt it was a little slighted due to the close proximity that Duke was released with Quake. It felt like at the time the 3D-oriented Quake engine got a lot more credit for "pushing graphics forward" than Build got for its massively improved feature set compared to Doom, since it was still using sprites. In reality, I think the two different engines both look great are are better suited to certain stylistic choices than the other. But it always seemed like Build was a lot less popular due to it seeming "outdated" compared to the Quake engine, at least by the teams creating the games. I really love the idea of making new games by taking old, existing technology and building upon it. I hope this is a first in a long line of games like that from 3D Realms. I love that they're actually creating new IP as well and not just rehashing old games. If they continue to pull off games like this, I will be buying them all. It's really ironic how 3D Realms spent so much time reworking Duke Nukem Forever over and over again trying to add stuff and keep up with technology until it was just so worn into the ground and late that when it finally came out, it was lackluster in so many ways, even compared to the original Duke 3D. They spent so much time trying to go beyond Build only to create something that didn't work as well. Had they just continued to improve Build, they could have made a much better game years ahead of DNF. A Duke game with crisp Build graphics like this would have been awesome.

That will actually be a very interesting port indeed. While I don't care for modern FPS games, I'm not at all nostalgic for the old design of key card hunting and wall humping. Ion Fury looks fantastic, but by "old school design," I really hope that doesn't mean wandering around a level repeatedly looking for that one hidden card that I missed. I know purists disagree, but it's not an aspect of the genre that aged well at all.

Best review of the game I've seen yet and possibly one of my favorite reviews of all time, especially since I really felt vindicated with the way you've described the difference between a large re-explorable set of spaces VS the more common corridor-progression. I have had a lot of heated discussions with people who really hated the Big Shell in MGS2 for that same reason, even though I finished up all the extra VR missions and Snake Tales and never felt tired myself and MGS2 is one of my favorite games of all time (along with MG2 and MGS1/Ghost Babel). The familiarity with a well designed enviroment with new spins on them makes all the difference for me. I really like backtracking when it's done competently because it allows me to breathe in the locations the same way I did as a kid where everything was new and exciting to me and I had the desider to wander more from different perspectives and give each area an identity of its own. Apparently some people really hate that they have to thread again into already walked down paths because to them it feels like it's halting their progress, but when the level and art design are so captivating, not stopping and smelling the roses is a huge disservice to what the game is providing you, and if the game itself can reward your ocd-ish tendencies by giving you added challenges that test your familiarity with the environment, then it has done enough to make that world feel alive.

I'm very excited to play Ion Fury!! But I have to disagree about Doom '16. While I think it is a good game I still feel its design is too frustrating and lopsided to be properly compared to old school shooters, it lacks flow and ends up off base from what I expected it to be. Ironically, Doom 3, though more linear, comes much closer to the joy of old school shooters than does Doom '16
