Congratulations on your new baby. Sorry to heat the problems you are having with both cars. I just recently bought the Ioniq 5 but am aware that we are all early adopters to these new cars. You have taken on Hyundai for the rest of us with your videos. I have much gratitude for the work that you do.

Thanks! I appreciate that, I had thought maybe our UK owners who got cars in 2021 might have done enough early adopting for us. Now I'm expecting my 12v, ICCU or charge port to fail since they seem to go around the 1 year mark for many owners. I'll continue to update until Hyundai comes up with a resolution!

Congratulations on your baby! I don't want to sound harsh but... 09:58 - Hyundai has this thing they Forward Collision Avoidance with Junction Turning / Crossing (FCA-JT/JC) and it specifically does that. It prevents you from turning into a curve when there is traffic incoming. Now, because that junction is such a mess, the system detected the incoming car and applied the brakes. Not only that, but Euro-NCAP tests this kind of functionality. I would suggest you return to the owner's manual and read again on that particular thing, as I heard a lot of people complaining about this system, in particular. There's no phantom braking, only aggressive turning (as you stated) on incoming traffic. The real phantom braking are happening on Tesla, where you have no car around and the car suddenly brakes for no reason. Coming back to the FCA system. My Kona does this if it sees cars parked on the pedestrian walkway, particularly if the road is curved, but that is stated in the owner's manual.

Hey Victor … First congrats on your new son, though his premature arrival sounds like a super scary occurrence. I (or rather my parents) had a similar situation 71 years ago when me and my twin brother arrived 6 weeks early. Fortunately no medical issues after our birth. The ongoing issues that you documented regarding your IONIQ 5, GV60, and Electrified G80 loaner were super disappointing to hear about. While alignment issues and some of the efficiency tracking software might be no big deal to most owners, the phantom braking is most definitely a potentially serious safety issue. Sadly, as manufacturers continue to add more and more tech into their vehicles, the problems seem to be mounting. When Consumer Reports shows the dismal reliability for some of the most prestigious brands, it is almost always caused by tech issues. You, and other You Tuber’s who enjoy using these features, can often demonstrate the fallacy of these systems. Frankly, I wish car manufacturers would focus on offering useful (and driver used items) instead of trying to one-up the competition with things that will seldom if ever be used. I don’t know what to tell you on safety issues you continue to experience with the GV60. I know that when driving as designed, the vehicle is giving you great joy and satisfaction, but if you’re not comfortable allowing your wife to drive it, no amount of pride in ownership is worth keeping a potentially defective vehicle. Have you gotten other drivers of both cars to duplicate your issues? On my end, the BMW 530e that I have ordered has been built, but continues to sit at the dock in Germany waiting to be assigned a ship for transport to the US (3 weeks and counting). The dealership expects it will arrive by the middle of May. Since it is only a PHEV, I won’t get the full EV experience, but being retired, I rarely drive more the 20 per day so I’m hoping to keep it in the EV mode for most of my trips and if needed switch to the hybrid mode for longer outings. Take care and enjoy your new bundle of joy. Best of luck on the vehicle issues.

Thanks James, and wow 6 weeks early with twins and over 70 years ago plus no long term issues sounds like a miracle! That's quite a story in itself, thanks for sharing that! I agree with your assessment on the tech, the more that's added the more that can go wrong. I'd imagine overall that safety tech like emergency collision avoidance braking has done more good than bad as in it's prevented more accidents than it has caused so I'm glad it's on most cars now. I just wish I didn't have to battle the manufacturer in finding a resolution. I really thought they would want to work together and find a solution. I've expressed that I'm happy to help document and provide footage and report directly to them but instead they've refuted my claims and left me out to dry. I'm hoping this time things will go better but we'll see. My wife has gotten the reverse phantom braking often while parking in our garage as well. Luckily she hasn't experienced the phantom forward braking while driving, just as a passenger while I was driving. If it were easily replicated I think that would help me learn to drive in spite of it but it's just unpredictable so left turns through traffic are an adventure. Hope the 530e gets transported out soon! PHEVs make so much sense, I'm surprised why we don't see more new options on the market. If Hyundai Kia Genesis had PHEVs for the Palisade/Telluride/GV80 I think they'd be selling out right now. I'd probably get one hah.

Good information and so sorry you've had these problems. Hopefully this will become a ""BUYER BEWARE" review for anyone even considering buying these cars. I use to be impressed with the warranties offered by Hyundai, Kia, and their higher end Genesis, but if they don't solve software and mechanical issues that are not the usual repair issues, then I wouldn't feel comfortable buying one now.

I agree, trying to deal with managers at Hyundai Canada & BlueLink department won’t allow you to talk with the tech department. They are nothing more than a message centre ( they don’t even drive the cars they represent, I always ask the person on the phone). @@CarsJubilee Thanks, Victor! I’m sure your videos are raising awareness among users and among people in the Hyundai group. Oh nooo, with the gv60 or the ioniq 5? People keep saying I have car probably built on a Monday, yours is sounding like that too. How did it go with the sales rep? Typically this stuff gets passed along to the service reps and if they can't replicate or resolve the issue (with phantom braking, they really haven't been able to do anything) then it gets pushed up to corporate.

Wishing your the best and Prayers for Zeke. My Audi Q7 used to do that sudden braking, in one case when I turned left after a car had passed, I guess the software didn't like the action and slammed the braking and collision like alarm, startling me. But I was also calculating a gap between the next oncoming car and didn't appreciate my car triggering brakes momentarily.

Hello again. I commented on your phantom braking issue before. This time it appears that the GV60 is looking at the change from asphalt to concrete and thinking that is an obstacle or structure in the road. This is an example of where cameras are bad and Lidar or Radar would be good.
@CarsJubilee
@CarsJubilee Жыл бұрын
Ya that's possible though I've taken this turn many times before without issue. I haven't had any 'road surface change' incidents so far, all of mine are linked to left turns and oncoming traffic. But I do think radar lidar would be great.

Thanks Armin! Yes, that's probably the best and most logical explanation of what's going on that I've come across. Very strange to see that it does it so intermittently. The 2 other times it happened the passing car would have been well over 100 ft past me when it triggers and slams on the brakes and keeps me unable to move. I'll have to ask them to focus more on that aspect the next time it goes in.

@CarsJubilee

It doesn't have the ability to use your phone's connection. Instead it's pulling things directly from Bluelink using its own connection. As long as you have an active subscription, free for 3 years for current buyers, free for all buyers starting 2024, bluelink has live traffic info using the built in Navi. But be warned, the Navi is awful at least in the city where there are 100 ways to get somewhere. The routing is often nonsense until you get onto the major highways.

You were brave to buy two cars in their first production year. It's EMYB (Early Model Year Blues). What you fail to mention is whether you reported the GV60 phantom braking/cross traffic collision avoidance braking to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). They are investigating the numerous phantom braking incidents reported to them for Tesla cars. The only thing I notice about the left turn into your driveway is that the pavement is a different color and appears to slope away from the roadway. I wonder if that is somehow confusing the software and making the car slow way down. I would definitely try contacting NHTSA. Good luck and best wishes to you and your family.

Congratulations on the birth of your new baby. A bit early, but as long as he is healthy and doing well, everything is fine. With the phantom breaking, that was pretty bad. I have never had anything like this with my GV60, and I have done just over 11,000km already. It is unlikely software (we all have the same software), and more likely hardware - sensors or sensor contectors perhaps. The only other thing I can think of is if you were driving into the sun, and the cameras were deceived. Would I drive my GV60 if it was phantom breaking? I'd be very wary of driving any car if it was phantom breaking.

@xiaowei1
@xiaowei1 Жыл бұрын
@@CarsJubilee most of my driving is highway driving. I do plenty of turning across lanes though with no issues. I have had phantom braking in a car park, going around a tight bend, but it was probably just protecting the car. I've never experienced it on the open road. The function works really well near a wall, bushes, etc... and i need to get quite close for it to kick in. I can get into tight spots with no issue too, my garage is probably 3 or 4 inches on either side (if that) of the side cameras and it has never kicked in. My experience with the car holds little complaint. All the features work well and the car is solidly put together. My efficiency by the way is about 17.5kw per 100km. My best is about 14.5kw per hundred (aircon off). So my range is around 420km after charging to 90%. I love the car, and the boost mode is awesome, but I do have some complaints - I find the seats to be really firm and not soft (so my long commute would be better with softer seats), and I would like native commands to run the built-in GPS. Other than that, the car is great. I simply have not experience the same problems you have been getting.

My Ioniq 5 with the 7 month issue of no Fast charging, reached a head last week, so tried a new Hyundai dealer, really large one. Talked to Bryce who is the warranty specialist, offered to book the appointment the next day! Booked an appoitment, they took the car in earl within 2 hours found the issue was a bent pin on the CCS pin temperature sensor that was shorted to ground and took out the original VCMS module (from factory) and the second one my other useless dealer service department installed. Bryce fixed the pin, installed the third VCMS module and now the car fast DC charges. But after all this I might still sell it, totally worn out with the multiple ferry trips into town for the original dealers service dept to attempt diagnosis.
@CarsJubilee
@CarsJubilee Жыл бұрын
Wow that's crazy, that first dealer clearly didn't know what they were doing. I can't imagine not being able to DCFC for 7 months. Not only does that impede on where you can go in your EV, it also means you weren't able to make use of the free charging benefit. Have you tried talking to customer care about this? They haven't done anything for me but maybe they'll help you. You may also have a case for buyback or lemon law buyback if you might sell it, since it took so long to get it fixed. If they won't honor a buyback I'd try consulting an expert? I'm right there with you feeling exhausted dealing with servicing the car. 2 hours round trip each time and then when I get my car back it's more broken than before or they won't/can't fix it which just adds more frustration. Let me know how things go if you reach out to Hyundai!
@berthogendoorn2133
@berthogendoorn2133 Жыл бұрын
@@CarsJubilee Here in Canada no lemon law, Hyundai was no support, I was the one that had to figure out the next step, research potential dealers that had lots of EV experience and were customer driven, that was the actual fix. Had I purchased the car at that dealer, likley I would have had the repair done 6 months ago. But with my bad taste, and that this is my long distant road tripper and CCS charging in Canada is going down the drain, Tesla Model Y now qualifies for full Federal and Provicial rebates, so the price difference is marginal and nothing is better for reliable fast charging than Tesla's Super chargers.

Hope your baby will be home soon. I have a 2022 IONIQ5 Limited. I have to charge the car at the reduced rate but that seems to work. Otherwise the car has had not problems. But I took my car in for the 10K service. Basically tire rotation and 2 upgrades for improving the charging rate and battery preconditioning. But something went wrong and now my car needs a new ICCU unit and fuse?? But there are no replacement parts available and they don’t know when they will come in. So I have no car to drive. There is a federal 1976 law that states that all car must have replacement parts during the warranty period. Hyundai customer service is none responsive after 3 calls and my local dealer states that they can’t do anything by contacting Hyundai. So don’t get an upgrade for your car if it’s working. This company better get its act together before a law firm starts investigation if there are others with the same problem. VW had to buy back my diesel Passat so I know what can happen.

I used to have a 2018 Accord and it pathom braked on multiple occasions. It happened once on the freeway at full speed. Instead of waiting for a fix I ended up getting rid of it even though everything else work the car was fine. It could've been worst with my car being hit. A car should feel safe 100% and that's how I feel. I think it's a software issue first if anything. If it was a hardware issue then it would be happening more often imo. As much as you love your GV60 I think it's time to get rid of it. I like that car too and test drove the same exact one. For my money I rather get the electrified GV70 tho. Our Ioniq 5 has braked for no reason 3 times now in about 9000 miles. Once on the freeway with no one in front or next to us, I think it was the shadow of an overpass on the road as an obstruction and flashed something like emergency braking and hit the brakes just for a seconds before figuring it out. Another time was going around a sharp bend on the freeway and it must have though the car in the next lane slightly in front of us in our path and hit the brakes hard that time, we probably lost 10mph on the middle of the freeway but no one was close behind us. Then once when traffic was slowing quickly I was also on the brakes and was slowing down but the car though I was too close to the next car and did a full unexpected emergency brake to a total stop. That was an extremely hard and nearly instant stop, but I was still maybe 3 car lengths behind the next car, not in danger of crashing into them. Then the stupid car said "Drive Safely" and it was the one to who slammed on the brakes for no reason.

Wow. This is the first time I'm hearing about phantom braking on the E-GMP cars. I have experienced that multiple times in my Model 3, but it wasn't hard and a complete stop like this. This is scary. Also, bad is that it took 2 months to get the car serviced. I was planning on selling my M3 and getting the Ioniq 5/6 in a couple of years. This will give me pause.

To date I've only heard maybe one other owner with any kind of similar phantom braking experience so I'm thinking it's not a widespread issue but it is concerning how Genesis has refused to do anything. Ioniq 5 is a fantastic ev, I do find that it's more comfortable and quiet than the model 3 but the smart phone app experience is a joke compared to what I've seen with Tesla. I've only experienced Teslas as rentals with the key card but based on videos etc i think that may actually be the biggest difference for some others jumping over.
@os2baba

@@CarsJubilee yes. I'm seeing three things that are terrific advantages of the Tesla over any other EV. The charging network, the FOTA updates and the app. Ioniq 6 is now providing firmware updates OTA, but I suspect that it will take them a few cycles before they can match the software capabilities of Tesla. I'm hoping that the NEVI program will change the CCS charging network landscape in 2 or 3 years. But I don't see anybody getting close to the Tesla software app. It's in their DNA. In terms of engineering, I think Hyundai is mostly way ahead of Tesla. But Genesis not responding to this is seriously damaging. Service was one of the things I thought Genesis excelled at over Tesla. But this is Tesla level service.

I agree with those advantages you see and depending on how you plan to use your EV it really narrows the shopping list. I've actually had a pretty good experience with the servicing dealership. I've had my Ioniq 5 brake (in HDA) when the car in front slowed abruptly or a car merged in front of me. I don't consider this phantom braking. Is this what is happening to you or is your sensor alarms going and you get an abrupt sudden brake?
@CarsJubilee
@CarsJubilee Жыл бұрын
If you watch the driving clips in the video, you'll see what I mean. Phantom braking for my gv60 happens when turning through opposing traffic but the car is still seeing a car that's not there. The g80 with hda phantom braking was for no reason, cars ahead maintain pace or there is no car ahead. What you've described is a limitation of hda that I experience often. The sensors do not pickup vehicles cutting in late until it's too late. I'll also do not describe that as phantom braking. For me, the gv60 brought me to a standstill and locked me up for 5 seconds where the car refused to move no matter what I did, so we sat there in the middle of active intersections just hoping we wouldn't get hit. The clip I have is a different example, the previous 2 times was much worse with the whole 5 second standstill stop.

With my gv60, I'd say all 3 times it was actually in manual regen. Most likely in ipedal since I was stopped. It's never happened to me in auto regen like it has in the g80. If it were more predictable I'd try all the different regen settings but it goes months between occurrences.

Hey there, I looked through your footage and I think i see why your car reacted that way. At 9:50 I noticed that you start the turn before the car on the left has fully cleared yet. Your sudden acceleration to the left may have triggered a collision warning since the car on the left side was in close proximity to your car. As to why the ioniq doesn't do that, it probably doesn't have an as advanced predictive collision avoidance system. It could possibly be that your driving style doesn't go well with the driver assist, but that's just my theory based on limited information.
@CarsJubilee
@CarsJubilee Жыл бұрын
Ya it's definitely possible, that's my belief as well that the car didn't like how closely I turned. But the system lags and let's me turn instead of stopping me immediately. If you watch the slow motion clip you'll hear the sensors going off after the car has completely passed. The 2 other times it happened I did not start turning until the passing car was 100% clear but it stopped me completely still. I've also made this type of turn hundreds of times in this car with no issue so there doesn't seem to be an exact pattern which makes it quite unpredictable.

My 2020 Lexus RX 350 has a similar issue when using the Dynamic Cruise Control. When in cruise control and the car ahead of me makes a right hand turn, and even if they have virtually turned out of my lane, the dynamic cruise control and (I surmise) Lexus' Smart Stop Technology will automatically and forcefully brake my Lexus. In some situations, the action nearly brings the car to a stop. I imagine that the two systems are working simultaneously to safeguard us. My guess is that the sensors sampling the area in front and to the right of the Lexus are possibly too sensitive. the beam is angled too much toward the curb and/or the software from two systems are compounding the resulting action. It happens even if I am fifty feet behind the turning car. When the event happens, the car following me probably thinks I'm an idiot driver. It's possible that the Genesis sensors are detecting a moving threat from oncoming traffic in a similar manner. It could be a car, a bike, a person...possibly even a power pole. I would guess that Genesis cannot fix your problem any more than Lexus can fix mine. Hopefully, adjustments will be incorporated in subsequent model years. BTW, your reviews of the two cars are very timely. Our lease on the Lexus ends soon, and the Ioniq 5 and GV60 are the top contenders to replace it. Nice reviews.

Thanks, I've seen similar 'braking' occurrences with Honda, Volvo and now Hyundai Genesis where the departing car is still within the lane or so the radar thinks. In my experience in that situation I can always override it by just pressing on the accelerator when it happens. It stinks but I understand what it's doing. With my gv60, it's happened 3 times where I cannot override whatever it is doing with the accelerator. My foot was to the floor when it was slowing down but it was still continuing to slow down. The other two times with foot to the floor it came to a complete stop and refused to move for about 5 seconds. Still really really good EVs and most people have not experienced what I have but just be prepared for a not so great corporate experience if things go south.

With Tesla Model Y price reductions do you think it might be a better choice? Thanks for your honest comments.
@CarsJubilee
@CarsJubilee Жыл бұрын
Thanks Ken! I don't regret my purchases but that has to do with timing. I was able to claim federal ev tax credit for both and I didn't have to wait long for either one. Similar spec Teslas were $10-$15k more expensive or just not compatible in equipment at the time. Now the model 3 and model y are severely discounted and at those prices I have a hard time arguing the ioniq 5 is $10k-$20k better than them. I've spent time in the model 3 and model y and what they lack in refinement they make up for with tech. If I had to choose in this current market, I'd probably go with the cheaper model 3 or model y. Or keep waiting and see how Hyundai and Genesis decide to battle the price reductions. Their cars are piling up at dealerships so eventually something's going to have to change pricing wise.

@CarsJubilee
@CarsJubilee Жыл бұрын
Hey Keith, I have a standalone home with level 2 charger installed plus we have solar panels so I have a fall back when I need it. But I bought these EVs for cost savings (federal tax credit and gas savings) and so I've been mostly using Electrify America for all our charging (probably 95% of all our charges). It's been perfectly manageable as I juggle charging both cars so my wife never has to but it helps that my EA station is within walking distance. If it were farther than that or always packed that would make things more difficult. I will say that it's getting harder. The reliability of the chargers has gone down the drain, half the time half the chargers don't work or only charge at half speed. Then there's the fact that nowadays the station is packed on weekends, lunch break hours etc. When I first started in February 2022, the station worked perfectly and was always empty. It was like clock work, in and out in 15-30 minutes depending on temperature and state of charge. Nowadays I can spend 40-50 minutes because of reduced charging speeds or switching between non working chargers. I'd highly recommend you stop by your local station where you would plan to charge and see how things look or talk to some of the people charging there. I know when I'm there I'm always happy to chat it up with people that have questions. Also download the EA app and check the status where and when you imagine you would go to charge. If the stations are all full or unavailable, you should expect you'll be waiting in a line to charge. I think it's doable but the next few years will only get worse. EA expansion is pretty slow as they can't even keep their existing stations going. Hope that helps, I'm hoping to do a video at some point about my experience with public charging as I think it's changing rapidly but not in a good way.

Report everything to NHTSA as soon as you can, especially if you managed to record everything on video. Car manufacturers usually won't give a fuck about issues, no matter how widespread they are, until government agencies will force them to fix these. Also use Lemon Law if it's available to you instead of waiting indefinite amount of time for Hyundai to eventually come up with fixes.
