Plows every 45 minutes?! We’re lucky to see a plow once every storm cycle here in central Oregon.

Great video, appreciate the info. I have run both these tires on ICEV's and my take is that the Blizzak's do have slightly better traction in the worst heavy snows but also more noise and WAY less directional stability in crosswinds. The Michelin's are so much easier to live with. Most of the winter even in Buffalo, the roads are dry so I'll take the X-ice's all day. If anyone is looking for a really beefy winter tire the General AltiMAX Arctic's are ace. They outperform the Blizzaks and ride better too. And if you really want to get nuts you can have them studded. Not sure if they have a size for the Ioniq's or not.

I really reccomend Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV. Best tire i ever had in harsh winterconditions here in Norway.

From Northern MN, North Dakota.. I've driven lots of brands. If you are dealing with lots of glare Ice get the Blizzaks. You won't be disappointed.

Someone needs to try this test in Oregon. They don’t salt the roads here and many neighborhood roads don’t even get plowed, so after a snow storm we could have weeks of the streets being 4” of solid ice. In the spring when it starts to melt in the afternoon then freezes again at night the roads look like an ice rink that has been freshly zamboni’d. It’s wild!!

I bought the Blizzaks because of the more aggressive tread. Studless tires have a softer rubber compound increasing traction in colder temps. Think higher end hiking boots to budget boots. I think some winter tires are designed for well maintained roads. I live rural so the blockier the tread the better the bite the tire has on snow covered roads. Toyo GSi 6s would've been my first choice if the tire shop I used stocked them. If you rub your fingernail over the tread you can get an idea of the traction the tire has. Cheers.

Great job Corbin! I bought some Continental Vikingcontact 7 for my HI5 AWD. Right now, they are considered to be in the top 3 with the X-Ice and Blizzak, but cheaper. Looking foward to install these. Note that winter tires are mandatory in Quebec (from December 1st to March 15th)

Not sure this is a good basis to make actual recommendations. You experienced a single snow storm with each, and drove on dry pavement the rest of the time. Weather was also different between your 2 tests. Sounds to me like the true conclusion is that the two tires performed well in your limited experience, and that they both had a similar impact on range (read : unknown, as you didn't offer numbers for driving on the OEM tires in similar climate conditions so we don't know if the impact on range was related to the tire or the weather). If you decide to do this again, maybe get different sets on each of your cars and compare to OEMs for both? Not sure what your best option would be.
@barney2001Ай бұрын
Good analysis. I agree with you totally about the two tires. We live in Ontario between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Lots of snow (5M), not a lot of freezing rain (more now with climate change). We depend on our Blizzaks for both cars (Bolt & Outback) to get around in winter. If we lived further south like Toronto we’d be on X-Ice which I think are just a little bit better with freezing rain. As far as we are concerned, winter range is the pits anyway so not spending it in the ditch is a good reason to get the correct tires.

I use XIce. I can't speak to the efficiency, but I can say that I've put 50,000 miles on them over 2 winters and this past summer. The summer wear didn't seem to be anymore, but that may be because I was down below the "winter tire wear bar." I am just about down to the final wear bar, so I'll be ordering another fresh set for this winter. I'll note that I have RWD and did 2 or 3 rotations to even out the tires. It seems to have worked well.
@SehnamGtrrАй бұрын
Why would you drive on winter tires in the SUMMER??
@Funktimusprime1Ай бұрын
@SehnamGtrr because they were too worn down to be used as good winter tires.

I picked up a 2024 ioniq 5 last month.. I'm in PA and have run blizzaks in the winter for about 7 years now on 4 different vehicles. It barely snows though, so this time I just put some pirelli weatheractives on. Hoping they work well for me.

lol ain’t that the truth. I’m also in PA and when I was a kid you actually needed winter tires. Now the all seasons seem to be just fine since it barely snows. global warming is a real bummer tho.

Throwing in my experience for a little more data, I put a set of 18" Blizzaks on my Ioniq 6 SEL last winter for driving in northern Vermont and Canada, they handled all of our storms well and I hardly ever had any slipping and sliding on them. I averaged 2.8 mi/kWh over the course of ~3,000 miles while I had those tires on the car. That was almost entirely highway driving though. I found temperature and battery preconditioning in the winter had way more of an impact on my day to day range than I think different tires could have made up for. I was getting as low as 2.2 on cold (as low as -20 F) legs needing preconditioning and as high as 3.2 on relatively warm days (30 F).

I have the ev6. Run general altimax aws march through October. When I put on a blizzaks for winter on a 18 inch wheel. Lost about 60-100 miles of range. This is back to back days at 53°. Figured out to turn regen to 1 and was able to squeeze back to about 3.2 miles/kwh in dry non snow conditions. Burned through the soft layer on the blizzaks and back over to 4 mi/ kWh in march weather. Blizzaks worked great in snow and ice with the soft layer. Once worn through they were more like my all weatthers. Thinking about the Michelin ice or the cross climate. Leaning to the cross climate s since on the tyre review they do about as well as a middle pack winter tire and they should have better range. I used to run a mustang with studdable winter without studs and they’re not as good as blizzaks but with sensible driving okay. I’ve done winter with the general all weather and the cross climate test better in winter. Just use snow mode and drive sensible should work.

I’ve used the X-Ice’s on multiple personal and company cars. I would say the X-Ice’s and also Pirelli Sottozeroes are the very best on dry even when it’s warm and the Blizzak WS-90’s are a hair better in snow and ice. The new Blizzaks are wayyy better and don’t fold in turns like the early versions. Your experience seems similar to mine. If you are in a place like Colorado front range or the Appalachians that gets rather warm but can get cold and heavy snow I’d go X-Ice. If you are in more continuous cold and snow I’d go Blizzaks. Now for EV efficiency, I defer to you owners and putting that in your equations.

All weather - now my factory Elantra tires - I just did not like them for 3 seasons - they hated the puddles and any sort of imperfect roads and horrendous in deep snow. So I sold the factory after 18 months and got the all weather Bridgestone "Weatherpeak" and as a bonus they jumped a notch being one rating higher (likely with my 16" having wide sidewall, they needed to make them stiffer). Here is what I found out - *all weather out perform pretty much everything in the often confusing "in-between" seasons* - the perfect 6 weeks of summer - they seemed fine - and worst part of winter - again they seemed to be very good to me - but if there was a horrific day of deep deep snow - I'm going to not go out if I can regardless of how good the snow tires are right - if younger I never cared if I had to get out to shovel etc right. Mileage I get a steady 5.3L/100k for 3 season, and at 6.3 to 7.3L/100k in suburban city driving in winter. Before I changed the tires - I was getting more in the 4.9 to 5.3L range, but the car was very new then.

I run Hankook Kinergy and they have worked well from an efficiency and handling standpoint, but wear may not be as good as expected. I have to check the tread, but they seem to be losing some wet traction in the last year (put them on 2-3 years ago). Currently, I am torn between the Blizzaks and X-Ice for winter. This video helped. It comes down to better efficiency & wear (X-Ice) at a slightly higher price vs. a little better snow performance with worse wear for a bit less $.

Back in '06 I got a Prius. I'm in Minnesota. That thing was the biggest POS in the winter. To the point that I'm certain the dev team who made it never tried to drive it in winter as I would get stuck in 2" of snow because the traction control was overly aggressive and could not be turned off. After getting stuck in an intersection and me getting pissed and kicking a dent into the driver side door. I got my first set of winter tires. I won't claim it was perfect but it was worlds different. Then back in 1017 I got a Mazda CX-5 and the same....I got Blizzak's. I could drive through a solid 8" of snow without issue.
@jeffsaxe3863Ай бұрын
I live in Virginia, and we only rarely see heavy snow. But I remember one snowstorm in my Prius, and I didn’t realize just how bad the traction could get! I was on all-seasons, and it’s FWD only, and as you say seemingly undefeatable traction control… I could not start from a standstill on even the slightest incline. Car just spun its tires a little and then flashed yellow in the dash, and sat there, no matter how I used the gas pedal. It was embarrassing and frustrating, and it really made an impression on me how different cars, drivetrains, and tires can be optimal in different circumstances!
@bearclaw5115Ай бұрын
Overly aggressive traction control, especially non-defeatable traction control is the bane of so many cars! I once rented a fwd Focus in South Lake Tahoe. We had to vastly exceed the speed limit in order to get up 30ft hills right in town. My CR-Z, when you jump into it in the winter the first thing you have to do is disable T.C. It's so ridiculous these manufacturers program an overly zealous T.C.S. that you have to turn it off to get anywhere!

Michelin X-Ice Good for a year in real winter conditions then the fall off is huge my personal experience, And i have driven on quite a few brands of winter tires, If you are in a mild winter area Pirelli Ice Zero are a better choice, now if you live in real winter conditions tested and proven for years Blizzaks, Hakkapeliitta ,Yokohama Ice guard, continental winter contact are the go to tires.
