Ioniq EV on 420km Time Challenge. Can We Reach Eurotunnel in Time?

Today we have another a go at a time challenge over 420km, driving from Burgundy, crossing Greater Paris, and driving up north to catch a Eurotunnel train in the evening. It's a bank holiday, the roads will be busy, so can we stick to the schedule with our trusted but very humble Ioniq EV 28kWh?
This is take 2 as on the way there we struggled to arrive on time, in part due to traffic but in part due to having an electric car. We got good choices of EV chargers despite a re-route through traffic, but we called that a fail on the basis that we arrived later than hoped. This is our chance to make up for it today with a 2nd try.

Its great to see fastned is also expanding into France, fastned and tesla chargers are my favorite so far since they always seem to work and have enough chargers available. It seems France is finally taking electric cars seriously and is expanding the charger network. With enough chargers having a small battery is not an issue. Keep the interesting videos coming, i own an ioniq EV myself and i cant wait to take a trip to france with it even though its a bit scary with France and non-working chargers combined with an EV that has very little buffer to get to a next charging station.

Thanks for the encouragement and yes France has massively improved. I intend to do c1000km in a day next month and I am not concerned about chargers this year (but mindful of overheating though!)

Love fastned chargers, they're amazing. Auto charge is a great experience, and the design is iconic. Reassuring to see so many chargers in France. Wanting to take driving holidays there soon with the girls, so nice to know it's simple. Thanks Edit: I find you have to really hold the cable in firmly until it locks on those 300kw black ones.

Agreed on Fastned although I have not used them nearly as much as Ionity, always looking forward to them. Chargers on French motorways have indeed massively improved in last 12 months. Thank you

Thanks. Check out one of my videos on charging this vehicle here. It goes to show rain or shine you know what to expect with a flat curve to 80%. A bit of overheating after a number of charges but nothing visible to the human eye... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoCTZJSpqL10epofeature=shared

I did in one charge 269KM or 271KM (if you calculate the underreporting, all on highway) with 3 or 5% left :o, it's insane :D

Thanks. Interesting seeing the evolution of the charging network in France. Could you do it without a mobile phone / app and just a credit card?
@evdabbler
@evdabbler Жыл бұрын
If you check out a 04:15 you can very briefly see credit card is an option. So that's Fastned sorted. The other two key ones on this motorway network are Total which I believe takes the card too and Engie which was scheduled to take the card at some point (but didnt on day of opening).

How did you get the auto-charge from Fastned to work in the end? Were you logged in on the Fastned app (with an account) before plugging in, which would have allowed the charger to know that the EV registered in the app has just arrived and is plugged in?
@evdabbler
@evdabbler Жыл бұрын
Yes. Second time I was logged in on the app. Still a bit of a mystery tbh. Fyi I had gone through the registration on a London charger a couple of weeks before

@@evdabbler thanks for the info. I shall do that with the app too in advance, should I come across a Fastned charger while planning my trips. Cheers.

If I understand you right, you just plugged in and the charging started at Fastnet? Is there any other company in France supporting autocharge? In Norway MER started using autocharge-functionallity. Unfortunately there is no autocharge option at any chargestation in Sweden, where I live.
@evdabbler
@evdabbler Жыл бұрын
That's right. Fastned calls it autocharge. For Tesla they just call it charging! Ionity (see great interview from Bjorn Nyland recently) claims they re already compatible with the plug and charge standard but that s then case by case as a function of your car software updates. That would make a big difference.

Do you like to charge on the ENGIE stations at the Eurotunnel terminal?
@evdabbler
@evdabbler Жыл бұрын
Yes, it's great to have these now. Only had a few minutes to charge this time as we caught an earlier train. Tesla is an option too, they're open to all vehicles on both sides.

Interesting, at 01:40, you seem to drive with the speed limiter at 80 mph, rather than the cruise control. Any reason for this?
@evdabbler
@evdabbler Жыл бұрын
You've got the hawkeye! I like the limiter, it's a good option if you want to slow down a bit going up, in fact the opposite being true ie increase the limit letting it cruise going downhill
@Nikoo033

@@evdabbler had to pause several times at key steps during the video to look at your various figures and see if they match what I have experienced with my Ioniq28. 😄 The downside of using the limiter is that you can’t really rest your foot I imagine. Does it use regen to keep you under the limit?

so correct me if i am wrong, but on the highway, you are going around 78mph (125km/h) and your consumption is around 13,5kwh/100km?
@evdabbler
@evdabbler Жыл бұрын
Not quite. 13.5kWh/100km is a mix of fast motorway and 90km/h roads. If you want to sustain 125km/h, you'd be looking at 17-18kWh/100km

Why not use Tesla superchargers ? They are cheaper and more of them
@evdabbler
@evdabbler Жыл бұрын
It's an option in general, but not for this trip in particular where there are none open on this highway. The limitations on Tesla are a) in the UK and France not all of them are open to non Tesla b) they are not always on the big highways c) prices have fluctuated but have not always been favourable - they are now, compared to new ionity subscription but not the old one, they also remain typically more expensive than Engie or Electra in France d) for the Ioniq specifically plugging in V3 is more than awkward
