I’m at point of not using the camera on this phone and going back to my digital camera. And I’m even at the point where I change my mind about buying a new update to the iPhone. Spent today setting up an iPhone 16 Pro. Last iphone was an X, still in use. A few times I thought that neither Steve Jobs nor Jony Ive would have let this out on the street. Experience was not bad but it was not great either. When I saw the updated? photos ap I wondered what they had done. Have used this video to make some needed changes.

What Apple should have done was to retain the features and layout in iOS 17 when migrating to iOS 18, but give users the option to add on any of the new features they find useful. Far better than forcing on users a ton of features and asking them to delete those which they don’t want.

I think they need to change how albums work. The albums should be where the photo is saved when you move a photo there, not in the “recents”. Like how most file management systems work.

I did this and only selected 'Albums' and 'Utilities', then I zoomed out to show a 3x5 grid. It now looks pretty much like it did on IOS 17. Thanks, Aron. I'm happier now!

@ The photos app, the widgets (when you scroll all the way to the left on the homescreen), the extra useless bloatware-like apps that nobody asked for, the control center (I made it the same as in iOS 17, so it’s one page with everything you need), and returning the Safari search bar to the top where it belongs. I may have done some more but those are the first things that come to mind now

They added extra steps on deleting photos. Before, when you go to the recently deleted album, face id will be scanned automatically. Now you need to press the screen for it to scan your face.

Wow... that was like the first thing I did after the update. I keep telling people it's fine if they just take a minute and set it up how they want it. Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. And yes, Pinned Collections and Utilities are actually nice improvements once you get used to it. I turned off all that other stuff... too much clutter.

Far worse for me in the Photos app for iOS 18 is the fact that I can not get the Visual Lookup feature to work. I LOVE this feature and it is gone. Still works on my iMac running Sequoia 15.1.1. Anyone else having this issue?? Am I the only one? Is there a fix that I should know about?

My issue with the new photo app is that I have albums that I syn from my computer to my photos on my phone, but I don't want them to be mixed in with the photos I have in my library on my phone. I liked them seperate so If I wanted to view a trip I had, I just go to to the album and view it from there not all mixed in within my photo library.

one of the biggest things i hate about the ios 18 photos app is the amount of clutter which im glad u can remove most of it but the swipe gestures honestly aren't rly convenient i swear i can never remember whether to swipe left right up or down to get outta sum but this video definitely helps a lot for sure

I have always used 5 photos in width when I hold my iPad or iPhone in portrait mode, and 7 photos in width in landscape mode. tick off what I don't want to see, I already knew about it. But honestly I wish they would stop making changes for the sake of making changes and create nuisance for a lot of people who feel it has become overall much worse and less friendly than the previous version. I thought I had gotten proficient at adding shape to a photo like a circle line to emphasize something that I wanted to point out. That was iOS 17. I wish the "library" section was just Recent Photos like before!! If I save an image from a website, it sorts its metadata by date so it could be anywhere amongst my 14,000 photos/videos. Now I have to go to the "Recent days" section to find it, until it moves itself out of there automatically after a few days. Aye aye aye, not a fan

Can you clear the cameraroll on iPhone by sorting and moving photos to folders, like how you would clear an email inbox by moving emails to folders? My camera roll has 8,000 images and it's impossible to see what's in a folder and what is not.

I don't like that it's now harder to playback videos, for some reason I now have to watch an editing window with a smaller video, and then have to manually turn it to full screen, instead of being able to play back videos in full screen mode like we used to do. I don't use the photos app for editing, I have specific apps for that, in the photos album I just want to see things in full screen, not just the first frame of a video.

Besides using it for viewing my photos the main section is for me the Activity in Shared Albums. While Shared Albums can be selected to be on top the Activity section that has all likes and comments is hidden behind Activity text in blue that reveals a panel that just wants to be hidden. On contrary I would like to pin Activity section as the main one. I could have it in iOS 17 under For Me section at the bottom. So previously I could either focus on my photos editing and cataloging them or jump to Activity section of my Shared Albums to see all reactions. It was for me much easier to use.

I honestly just don't want to see "All photos" as a priority. I want to see my albums because then I can specify what I am looking for. "All photos" is utterly useless for me as I have media coming in from everywhere (messages, saved photos, camera, downloads etc.) and it becomes a jumbled mess. If there was a way to hide "All Photos" I'd take that in a heartbeat. Edit: An automated "Camera" Album wouldn't go unnoticed either.

In iOS 17, the most recent photo was at the top, a sorting order seen still in iOS18 in "screenshots" and in "favorites" etc. So why are the photos in iOS18 sorted the wrong way around, with the most recent photo at the bottom? Who does that? 😂 Any way to change that setting too?

The only thing that I hate about 18’s photos app, is that it takes everything I had organized into custom folders, and it throws it all into one big random pile on the top of the app’s opening screen. If Apple added an option to hide the big pile of random media at the top of the opening screen, I would be very happy again.
