I love the clash on "for sitting folded" - it's hard to tune but so beautiful when it's right as it is here!

This song has amazing song structure. It starts off with the big swells, the middle is, the raging sea during a storm, and it finishes off with the sea at it's calmest with small waves crashing on the shore. The lyric "For sitting folded close to me" makes you think of laying on the beach holding the one you love as you watch the sunset together. I sang this in the ACDA Honor Choir. A truly amazing piece of music.

The ending just leaves you...breathless. I remember this moment when I sang this in the IA all state choir for 2011. Out of all the songs I've sung in choir, I'm glad that year's music has stuck to me since beginning the process a little over a year ago. (My school starts really early in August)

I absolutely love love love this piece due to the natural dexterity of the artists expressing it and the composer for channeling the ocean into music with each dissonant harmony - I created a mastered recording of this using audio editing software that really brings out the true beauty of the singer and I love listening to it. If you'd like I can post the version on here (while obviously paying homage to yall for actually recording it) so you can have a clearer version !

@catlover325, I am part of the choir in this video, and I can tell you that we, as a choir, were definitely feeling a lot of emotion during this entire performance at ACDA. You can't necessarily view emotion from a tiny, zoomed-out video on KZbin. No, we're not doing any swaying or dance moves, and we're not grinning like a cheesy glee club (it wouldn't match the mood of the song), but the emotion is intrinsic within the song. Also, ACDA is not a competition; it is a convention to share music.

@xoclkox --Straight tone singing is particularly dangerous for higher voices, (Soprano and Tenor) although it can be equally as dangerous for all voice types. Straight tone is less dangerous if used in small amounts, as compared to all the time, but I have yet to hear from any respected vocal pedagogue that straight tone can be proper vocal technique. Thanks for your comments!

Straight tone puts large amounts of pressure on the vocal folds, this kind of pressure brings about the development of vocal nodules. I have read and participated in many Vocal Pedagogy and Vocal Health books and classes, and not once have i ever heard that straight tone can "focus your instrument" In fact it will do nothing but hinder the student in other areas of their study.(Ex. Solo Voice) A voice is an instrument that lasts for a lifetime and it will if it is cared for in the proper manner.
@leggerotenor
@leggerotenor 14 жыл бұрын
@AJMD08 Actually, I am fully prepared to comment on this subject, maybe i should be clear about the straight tone (again). Straight tone itself does not and will not cause vocal harm to anyone, just vibrato itself does not save a voice from harm, singing with improper technique cause vocal damage. Straight tone can and is achieved through proper vocal technique if one is instructed correctly. Here is to hoping that one day you discover the full beauty of the human voice. :)

if you noticed, i said, "i would suggest taking SOME of the vibrato out". not to sing completely str8. furthermore, if you know what ur doing (i.e. have good basic technique) you'll find that singing str8 at times can help focus ur instrument. so, singing str8 correctly can actually be very helpful.....
@allstatebass

fabulous job, guys! i would suggest taking some of the vibrato out so that the dissonances can actually speak. especially the ones on "folded" between the sopranos and altos. otherwise, beautiful sound.

@JRichardYoung Of course you aren't born with vibrato... it's something that develops as your chords mature. I, as a piece of anecdotal evidence, hated the sound of vibrato (and still sometimes do) yet mine began developing around age 13, after I had already been singing (and preferred to) sing with straight tone for some years in choirs both in school and outside of school.

@leggerotenor There are many ways one can do harm to one's voice, singing straight tone is just one. I encourage you to read up on some Vocal Pedagogy/ Vocal Health. Before commenting on something you may not be fully prepared to comment on!
@mwdot12
@mwdot12 13 жыл бұрын
@AJMD08 It is only damaging if you don't do it properly. Respectable pedagogues argue about this all of the time, no ped. will say that proper technique is straight tone, but most will not tell you that it cannot be done properly. The truth is that vibrato is natural and comes from natural use of the voice, but if you have a proper technique of minimizing it to create a clear tone, then no harm is done. However, one must be extremely in tune with their own instrument in order to do this.
@AJMD08
@AJMD08 13 жыл бұрын
@mwdot12 While I respect your view....I'm here to tell you...there is no "safe" way to sing using straight tone! Vibrato is a neurological impulse that acts as a calming or freeing agent in the voice, holding ones voice "straight" doesn't allow the the voice to feel relaxed....it causes tension. And i think we can all agree that tension is the single greatest enemy of proper vocal technique. All tension present in the body must be as far away from the vocal folds as possible.

@AJMD08 fairly certain that you have no idea what you are talking about... I know many who sing with vibrato who have harmed their voices greatly.
@xoclkox
@xoclkox 14 жыл бұрын
...I'm reading some of the comments below mine and wow...straight tone harming the voice? lol That's a new one. I don't think that's true at all. There are some people who never obtain virbrato in their singing...so are you saying that they damage their voice all the time?...That would be a no. I for one can relate because I sing straight tone and don't really have a virbrato. I have to use my diaphragm to produce virbrato. IMHO it's easier to sing straight tone...but to each his own I guess.

@AJMD08 I'm sorry, but I disagree with you. Tension is very bad, yes, and I have been taught both good and back technique regard tension, I do not agree that vibrato is natural. Over the last 200 years of vocal instruction, it may have been masked as natural, but most people are not born with it, and are forced into producing fake vibrato; making them practice until it sounds natural. We'll have to agree to disagree here.

Sopranos need to shut up at around 3:50... they overpowered the whole choir and i would bet they were only written at a mezzoforte at most... Other than that I loved your guys' interpretation. Awesome
