Iowa trout fishing is a fun way to spend a summer weekend. The streams of the Northern Iowa Driftless region were, for the most part, washed out by recent rainfall. I first attempted to fish Bloody Run, but it was too murky for my taste. I continued North to Waterloo Creek, knowing that this sandy bottom trout stream would be less likely to be stained.
Fortunately, I was right. So I spent an afternoon and morning chasing Iowa Brown Trout in search of a big one.
The first day was a tough bite and more of a scouting session. The next morning I was on fish, catching one brown trout after another until I finally got on a big one.
After a couple of drifts through the tail of a riffle with the size 16 Copper John, the fight was on. Following an exciting and tense battle I landed my biggest Brown Trout ever; a true Iowa giant. This fish wasn't a brood fish stocked full grown from the hatchery, but rather a wild grown brown trout.
This fish made the hours long drive totally worth it and I can't wait to make my way back up to this part of the Driftless region in the future to chase more Iowa trout.
