Back in 1989 the Big Ten was easily the best conference in the country.

Absolutely. The Big East gets a lot of attention in the eighties but the Big Ten was the best conference from '87 - '89 in my opinion.

Kinda like how the pac12 was last year. Not even close.

Iowa was the preseason #1. Illinois started 17-0, rose to #1. Indiana wins the Big 10. Michigan wins the NCAA. 1989: best, most exciting year ever for big10 fans.

Sorry. Iowa preseason #7. All 4 teams reached #4 or higher at some point in the season.

Beetlebum Baileyan Between Michigan Indiana and Illinois they had to I'll look it up. I live in ACC BIg East country but back then I loved The Big Ten tough conference and they didn't have a conference tournament for a long time it broke my heart that Michigan and Illinois had to meet to go to the Final...

+Tragico yeah you may be right about that for the AP poll. I know that Iowa was preseason ranked #1 by the sporting news magazine preseason hoops magazine. It might not mean as much but it was very cool to see the Hawkeyes on the cover with the number one ranking preseason... Disappointing season for the Hawks that year. Just not enough quality bench play to make it through the season. Then Ray Thompson got suspended for the NCAA tourney. If Ray Thompson doesn't get suspended for that tourney the Hawks could have been a threat.

The best sports rag of the era, the Sporting News (which accurately tabbed Jordan as college player of the year twice) had Iowa as the pre-season #1. I still have the magazine which featured BJ Armstrong on the cover with Herky.

I have this game on VHS somewhere. It's amazing how quickly the 88-89 Illini could make a big run. Thanks for the great trip down memory lane.

32:50 Kendall Gill's 1st basket in 6 weeks triggers Illini run with awesome transition play. Enthusiastic play by play by ESPN John Saunders

You are right with that statement. Just a fluke that Nick Anderson did not get that rebound. I still get sick thinking about that game. That team I think could probably beat some NBA teams.
