I had the great honor to have a sifu who trained under Ip Chun. He told me that Wing Chun (that's just one of the many westernized spellings of the martial art) was never designed for sport or contests. It was always a form of self defense. The first lesson he always started off in his trainings was:"Never fight if you can deescalate. Never fight if you can run away. But if you have to fight to defend yourself be certain to take out your opponent as quickly and decisively as possible." Wing Chun focuses on weak points like joints, throat, eyes, nerve endings, genitals, neuralgic spots. It doesn't fight fair. If there is an opening you can feel in the defense or an offense, use it. If you can make certain an opponent who truly threatens you is taken out of a fight, don't hold back for misplaced fairness. Break or dislocate joints, especially knees and ankles, or elbows if given the opportunity. Many martial artists claim Wing Chun doesn't work in sporting contests, and that is true to a degree. When you are trained to feel the direction or force an opponent uses against you, to misdirect that direction by just enough, and to use that opening for the most vicious counterattack by pure reaction or muscle memory, not by thinking about it, you often can't stop such a counter to the weak points.

The main issue wing Chun has in the sport world is lack of spar training. And/or cross training with other styles. Ex: wrestling and jujitsu interact semi-often, boxing vs kickboxing, boxing vs wrestling. Wingchun doesn't really interact and when they do, they get pummeled almost all the time. Only attacks in mma not allowed or eyes, groin, biting. Joint attacks and breaking is legal.

@@LA_HA Agreed. No offense but Gen Z kids are WAYYYYYY underdisciplined and lacking of work ethics and certain manners. Spanking and disciplining and shaming should return. We're not even allowed to allow "hurt feelings" exist at all anymore. You can only say "yes", you can never say "no" to anything. This is why I grew out of liberalism and back to my parents' style. They told me they spanked me because they loved me, not because they hated me. They discipline and teach me things about the world because no one in this world will do that for me, and because the real world out there is far more cruel. They were right. No one cares more about you than family. Friends can only help so much, but good stable family is ALWAYS there to help you through thick and thin forever, not just a couple times like friends do.

As mentioned in the film, Ip Man's fighting style is Wing Chun. It is said to be created by two women, Ng Mui and Yim Wing Chun. According to legend, a warlord wanted to marry Yim Wing Chun, but she refused and instead challenged him to a duel. She came across Ng Mui, a Buddhist nun whom she asked for help. Together they created the art of Wing Chun, which the nun named after Yim Wing Chun. Wing Chun won the fight.

Foshan was the birthplace of the most famous version of Yongchun today. In Foshan, the style was mostly practiced by the children of wealthy merchants, as their parents could afford the high tuition fees and they had plenty of time to train. The most famous of them today, Ye Wen (Yip Man in Cantonese), studied the style with Chen Huashun, Wu Zhongsu and Liang Bi (Liang Zan's son). In 1949, he settled permanently in Hong Kong, where he began teaching Yongchun to members of the restaurant workers' union. Before his death in 1972, he trained a great number of today's famous masters and fighters. Ye Wen brought fame to the style, but this fame was not always established by worthy methods. There are many known cases of Ye Wen's students coming to other Hong Kong kungfu clubs and beating up the teachers. Currently, there are many Wing Chun sections in Hong Kong, where Yip Man's students teach, as well as representatives of other Wing Chun branches. For this reason, Wing Chun is not included in the register of martial arts. The Vietnamese branch of Wing Chun Kuen began in 1939 with Ruan Jiyun (Nguyen Te Kong), a legendary Chinese master who came to Hanoi at the invitation of the Association of Chinese Immigrants in Vietnam and who brought to life the principle of Chinese martial art, which states: "four liangs to overcome a thousand jins", which means: "a weak effort neutralizes an attack."

Although I have not practiced the "Kung Fu Life" for many years, there are lessons one never forgets.

Oh, it's Ip (Yip), never "I. P." It's the master's family name ... translated from the character 葉 (leaf). "Man" is 問 (ask). Wing Chun is 詠春,supposed be the lady's first name, the one who created the original style of this martial arts, together with help from a Shaolin monk ... at least, that's how the legend was told in one version. There's a move in Wing Chun style, called "問手" (asking hand) or "問路手" (ask for direction hand) ... so, when Ip Man does it, I enjoy the double meaning! 😅 😁👍 Easily, I vote for continuing with watching Ip Man #2 and #3 ... the three movies made up a full journey story (e.g., don't you want to know how Bruce Lee comes into Ip Man's life?). I think, #4 did not have quality editing in some parts, and some dialogs get a bit extreme. For me, overall, #4 was a good movie though, but may not be for everyone. BUT ... what is interesting now is ... after many years, they are making movie #5 for Ip Man, it's being made ... with Donnie Yen‼ 😉

24:44 Fun fact: The actor getting smacked in the face also would go on to play as Ip Man in another film that was set as an origin story and depicted him growing up as a young adult before he became a master of Wing Chun. It's called The Legend is Born: Ip Man (2010). 24:55 Also, knowing how to defend yourself is one thing, but if you haven't practiced enough or experienced getting hurt or actual fighting, then you won't last long in a fight. The mill workers all had the basics down but against seasoned and experienced fighters, it was only a matter of time before they would get overpowered. So Ip Man stepped in and ended it immediately.

In reality, after the 2nd Sino-Japanese War, there was a Chinese Civil War between the Communist Party and the Kuomantang. The Communists won (1949) and Ip Man belonged to the Kuomantang party so he and his wife and daughters moved to Hong Kong. In 1951 his wife (Cheun Wing-Sing) and eldest daughter had to return to Fo Shan for IDs but the border was closed before they could get back to Hong Kong. Ip Man and Wing-Sing never saw each other again and she died in 1960 from cancer. Ip Man's sons rejoined him in Hong Kong in 1962.

Ip Man vs 10 black belts is not only an iconic fight scene but it also showcases some powerful details. The way it's portrayed, the emotions of losing someone he considered a friend, starving and the suffering he endured resulted in him fighting at his strongest ever. This Ip Man makes you afraid. What you feel from that scene is unparalleled. It's heartbreaking too because when he tells his wife later that he was useless, it was because with all of his strength and power after wiping the entire floor with those 10 black belts, he was powerless to help his fallen friend.

Greatly enjoyed watching this with you! I myself could NOT truly recommend all the sequels afterward unless you just like to see action scenes and enjoy Donnie Yen's acting because it really becomes just total fiction with very little basis in reality, whereas THIS film was basically 90% accurate and a great report of history. Ip Man was the Grand Master of Wing Chun who was renowned for his great combat skills and his leadership. Regarding one of his most famous pupils, Bruce Lee, he was the only one who was able to convince Ip Man to perform his WC forms in front of a camera and Bruce recorded it for posterity (you can view that footage on KZbin). And Lee himself was put on camera so we got REALLY lucky on that because Bruce Lee was able to actually sneak in a few movies at the very last 1.5 year of his life. Prior to that...there are zero movies, he was simply a veteran at live combat. In live situations Lee had fought; Black Belts, Pro Fighters, Ex military, Champions, 3rd degree Masters, Rival Martial Artists, and opponents that outweighed him by 100 pounds. His battle experience started in his teenhood as the leader of the Hong Kong gang known as the Tigers 8 of Junction Street and the violence had lead all the way to adulthood. The few movies he DID get to make were only at the last 1.5 years of his life which was a brief opportunity for him to report his life experiences and share to the world his insights into live combat. He only made 3 little movies plus One Hollywood film, a very short attempt at films but we're lucky he at least made them just before he died to show us his insights on his life of hard combat. Beckett Media has ranked Bruce Lee in the Top 50 Greatest Athletes of All Time, as he was able to raise unbelievable weights that pro weight lifters could not. We owe a great debt to Ip Man for producing one of his most superhuman students.

There's lots of other great martial arts films if you guys ever decide to do more than dip your toe. There's some older Wing Chun movies also - Wing Chun (which I believe has a young Donnie Yuen in it), Warriors Two (not a sequel) and The Prodigal Son with Yuen Biao who you may recognise from Jackie Chan movies. Jet Li has done a lot of great stuff. If you want something modern try Kiss of the Dragon. Fushan is a famous Kung Fu town - most notably for Wong Fei Hong. There's over 100 movies about him, some of the best ones have Jet Li starring.

Ip Man 2 is also great, but possibly even more infuriating in the unfairness of the fights Ip is forced into, but I guess that makes it all the better of a movie if it makes you feel that rage! You guys will LOVE Jet Li's Hero!

Caning from feather duster hurts as hell but Imagine it also has an upgraded version. Singapore’s Judicial caning is the MORE evolved form of caning compared to the feather duster. An American man called Micheal Fay can attest to that. 😅

It's never on anybody's list, but whenever people discover Donnie Yen, I always recommend "Sha Po Lang." (Also known as "SPL", or "Kill Zone".)It's a far cry from the traditional balletic martial arts movies, and Donnie leans more toward MMA, but the fight scenes are no less astonishing, and storytelling is top notch as well!

There's a lot of translation issues here. Specially this part 12:31 when his kid came out and tells him about what the wive said. The correct translation should be: "papa, if you keep being on the defensive, everything in the house will be broken." Or literal translation would be "papa if you dont start fighting back, everything in the house will be broken."

Now that you've done this one, you have to do the next three Ip Man movies with Donnie Yen. Master Z is a good spin off but comes after Ip Man 2 or 3 I think.

How can Fearless poll so low , it's mindboggling , it truly is one of the best martial arts movies ever ... And the guy in Fearless i believe was connected with IP Man's master. I believe they both founded martial art schools around the same time and knew each other quite well.
