For those of you wondering the background stories of these two, they practice the same style of Martial Arts taught by two different masters. Master Z's Wing Chun takes a more offensive stance of the Martial Arts which also compliments his character due to his willingness to use a more brutal approach. Ip Man's Wing Chun takes on a more defensive stance that compliments his character where he fights only when necessary with the sole purpose to defend himself. Of course Ip Man himself likes these sparring sessions but he was trained with a more defensive approach due to his master being someone who never liked resorting to violence

did anyone else notice that at 3:55 ip man attacked first? for those who haven't watched all the movies, he ALWAYS waits for his opponent(s) to attack. this is an immensely out of character thing for him to do, which shows just how much he was going through. the frustration of wanting peace but always having it disrupted, the grief for his wife and worry for his son etc... this is absolutely sublime.

Donnie Yen did an incredible job in the Ip Man series of movies. His martial arts are spectacular, his portrayal of Ip Man is compelling and he obviously does this fight scene very well. I think you are partly right. Ip man in general holds back since he doesn't fight to seriously injure unless the other does it first and is a threat to him. Most martial arts fighters know how to seriously injure someone so they will know what moves they should avoid. When ip man faced 10 black belts in the first movie he went to hurt them so every blow he made was to seriously injure or cripple them. When he faced a small army in ip man he didn't seriously hurt anyone because they were stupid teenagers. He wants to see how strong the ones he fights are most of the time but how and if he will finish the fight depends on his opponents' actions and skills regardless of them doing underhanded moves.

@@DBtheGhost2 basically ip man went and said I want to fight ten black belts. The chinese fighter chooses how many japanese fighters he can fight and the amount of rice would depend on how many he defeated. I don't think it was a fight until injury or death though. As someone who did wing chun for 4 years as a teen, this gives me chills. The classic weapons, long staff and butterfly knives; I used to watch senior students go through those staff drills, the movements are so familiar. Several times they go into rolling; we used to train doing that for hours. At 4:25 he goes into the basic training stance. That last one-inch punch, we used to practice them by hitting wall bags or phone books. They haven't made the fight scenes flashy for the sake of hollywood, it's real solid technique that anyone learning wing chun will recognize. It's truly beautiful to watch :')

I always say it more like Ip took advantage of Chun’s error to finish the fight with flourish rather than efficiency. And we know efficiency is Ip’s bread and butter. Could have done many things to take advantage of the situation, such as aim for a part of the body Ip would have a harder time seeing, anything below his eye level, such as a leg sweep or body shots. But Chun decides to go for the headshot, literally maintaining his attack right at Ip’s eye level. Chun believed the fight to be over and wanted to end it with and offensive statement rather than efficiency. If Chun ever learned to adapt after that and avoid those errors, he’d be unstoppable.

Ip wasn't trying to hurt Chun so much as demonstrate that his technique was superior. Chun using that technique was a demonstration of no holds barred, which is why Ip ended the fight immediately after it was used. That said, Scott Adkins was ruthless and willing to literally break another person in Ip Man 4, so Ip gave no quarter. The devastating throat jab at the end really demonstrated that much.

Did anyone notice that the core style of Wing Chun is displayed perfectly here... Wing Chun means that with every defense move there HAS to be an offense move as well... It was so perfectly portrayed by the choreographer here that when either of them took a blow they made sure that the opponent also took a blow... Its a pretty basic concept that if u want to strike someone in a fight, then u HAVE to surrender your guard, even if it's for a millisecond... And that's exactly what Wing Chun specialises in dealing with, that as soon as the opponent strikes, u strike back, while his guard is at its lowest... These subtle details are what make this movie a masterpiece and I cant help but point it out...

Good observation but wing chun philosophy as far as I understand is to try NOT to take any punishment...at all. James demile said it perfectly when he met Bruce Lee he thought it was a joke and he would destroy him with his power and overwhelming size/force. He would've if he connected but he said Bruce was to fast. Demile also said never go hit for hit because a good boxer or conditioned karateka can take more punishment than you could give. I think WC seeks centerline upon interference using bridging/chi sao to trap and or blast thru and just hammer so as to not let a superior fighter regain his bearing and beat WC man down...imo. But ya I agree its a beautiful fight scene showcasing so many different techniques in WC! JKD and WC are amazing !!

I don't actually think Ip Man was sandbagging in this fight like some folks are saying (he's got the sleeves rolled up before it even starts), but the eye gouge is definitely the reason Master Z lost - after the eye gouge he got too aggressive and one-dimensional trying to quickly end the fight before Ip Man recovered, and Ip took advantage by feigning weakness long enough to slip a counter-attack through his aggression

The cinematography in this clip is *spectacular.* Even without seeing the rest of the movie, you know without a doubt that these are two absolute *masters* of their arts, evenly matched. By showing how effortlessly their weapons smash through hardwood and concrete, you are shown that they are both deadly and used with full force. The shots switch between close in and zoomed out as needed, moving organically around the fighters to make you feel like you are right there. Unlike with many action movies, the editors didn't drop everything into a food processor and spit out a dozen cuts a second that leaves the audience confused as to what is going on. (The Jason Bourne fights come instantly to mind as one of the worst examples.) Here, the cuts happen exactly when needed to inform the audience exactly as to what is going on, following the flow of the story. Bravo.

@@danielfolks6997 When you're at Ip Man's level, your stance isn't just to fight but you train your instinct too and you can predict where the hits would be. in most Chinese martial arts be it Wing Chun, Hongkeun, Baguaquan or even Baji, they train you the basics first but then they train your instinct to predict where the hits are coming from. It's an advanced technique that you'll mostly see in Eastern martial arts. I have actually received such trainings in kendo where you're blindfolded and you have to tone down your heartrate and breathing rate to focus on the surroundings and listen to the wind crackle from the shinai and then retaliate or at least parry the incoming swings at you. That's one of the fundamentals on how you can get your 5th or 6th Dan (Basically Sensei status) for Kendo.

This is basically a perfect demonstration of not only the 2 primary weapon forms of the various Wing Chun style (that being the long pole and butterfly swords) but also of the fundamental principles which the combat style itself is made to emphasize. Annnd of course Ip Man being a badass, cause he do be like that. It's always hilarious that he was honorable enough to relinquish his sword and fight hand to hand, then got low-key pissed at the eye gouge and ended this sucker.

i am not sure how fight scenes in movies work. i know its practiced alot and but to remember all the moves in the timing is insane. maybe its sped up and slowed down and spliced up/cut scene then blinded together to make one fueled fight. got to give props to the actors and camara team for making it look so real even tho its not
@darinlunderman8063
@darinlunderman8063 Жыл бұрын
I mean, It's obviously not realistic because someone is definitely going to get cut or stabbed when dueling with blades or striking each other through pieces of wood. I personally prefer seeing scenes inwhich characters engaging in combat results in visible injuries but I will admit, it is great to see the level of talent that it takes to make fake fighting look as visually-incredible as it can possibly get. Some martial arts films are hit and miss when it comes to choreography but the Ip Man series is particularly good, mostly due to Donnie Yen's ability.

I find it very interesting and funny that Donnie Yen basically has to be blind first to show that he doesn't see the punches, he only has to feel them, in order to then show that he can defeat the opponent with just a few punches and finally with a really hard one to his knees. It's all choreographed, of course, but you're definitely seeing two champions fighting at world-class levels

Great scene of a great fight between two legends: Donnie Yen and Zhang Jin. Donnie Yen (Ip Man) got the chance to be the chosen one for this character. But believe me, Zhang Jin is also on another level. He's underrated and I'm so sad for him because he's like Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, just used most of the time as a powerful vilain or a supporting actor, to make the main actor seeming more powerful. This guy deserves a saga like IP-MAN, and in a real fight, I'm not sure Donnie will win a real fight against him.
