It did look cracked but as we all know looking in from above is sometimes a lot easier to notice things. Another great job 👏

Just have to say that I like your style of diagnosis. I started doing electronics repair about a year ago, and doing micro soldering. One of the things that made me anxious was the fact that I still have trouble reading schematics. Every day I watch a few of your videos and I'm always amazed at your ability to diagnose so many issues with only a close visual examination, and the thermal cam. I'm still learning schematics, but you have taught me so much. Thank you for doing these videos. I also like the fact that you get to the point quickly without a lot of talking. I can learn a lot more from one of your 18 minute videos than I can watching other channels that go on and on for over an hour.

It did look like that cap had a hairline crack but sometimes it is hard to differentiate a crack vs a hair or something else on top of a component in a video stream.

awesome job as always. i noticed a cracked cap straight away at 3:42, but that just because i watched at closer distance. the camera image quality is superb, the lights positioning also helps creating those beautiful closeup footages. i love it.

I am watching you videos for a while now and finally subscribed. I learned a lot from you, in terms of diagnosing electronics. I recently had my usb hub not working fine and checked everything. I found a loose connection at the port, where your cable from your pc plugs into. resoldered the connection and it works. :) Keep up the nice work and greetings from Germany. :D

How do you know when it is not necessary to replace a component you just removed? How do you know the tablet is not going to have any performance issues due to the missing component you just removed?

My guess is that in this case it was one of many in parallel decoupling capacitors (smoothing out voltage difs or noise), one missing is not really affect things.

Thanks for the video. I watch all of your videos, and again and again I under-estimate how small those structures really are. On my 7th gen iPad I had a crack in the glass. Thus I went for exchanging the screen. Following what I have learned I disconnected the battery before disconnecting any cables. Probably with a wrong tool. In the end the iPad wouldn’t turn on. Then I looked for a cracked capacitor and thought I had found one. Near to M1 IC. Tried to unsolder it with hot air. When I finally had it, it had another of the very tiny size attached to it. When tried to split them I recognized: no shorts. So I tried to reattach them. One flow below the metal frame. On trying to bend the metal frame, another cap flew away, thus I tried to collect this for re attachment. In the end no improvement. I went ahead and measured around the Tristar/Hydra IC. Nothing conclusive. I ordered one anyway. So I changed this one (without experience in BGAs). Now I came to an alive iPad in DFU. Recovery impossible, some tools recognized the IPad as cellular, even tho it is WiFi only. So i looked around the caps between M1 and cpu. Found some strange things. When I tried to rearrange, my tweezers (even though pointed and angled) were just to big. Suddenly M1 ic flew away... oh my... Just resoldered M1 as it was. No spare, little hope. No way to reball this kind of IC. Then I finished my cap rearrangement, and I guess I am missing 3 of them in the meantime... With little to no hope, I went on to reconnect everything. As this story goes over like 2 weeks, the battery was drained in DFU. So i had to wait for enough charge to turn the thing back on. And when it finally came back, it started right into lock screen. Everything still there. Everything still works. That was my „yes“ moment. Now I need to figure out, how to really get everything clean and dust free and then reassemble for good. This one will stay with em until death to us part, because it is slightly butchered inside. So no good for sale. P.S.: after that story I need to express: I do have all those tools and stuff, but this is only my hobby and I don’t butcher customer stuff, because I just work on my own things. :)

Why did u not replace it ?
@gravyblue
@gravyblue 4 жыл бұрын
Caps let through AC but stop DC, so in a circuit, they are either in a signal path or on the power supply. When they're on the power, like this one, they send any noise to ground, cleaning the power. There are usually dozens of them, that's why this one that had shorted was directly pulling the power down. If the cap had been in a signal path, a short wouldn't break the device, but may make it dangerous, in a tube amp got example, where they keep the high plate voltages away from the person plugged in. Caps are also used for their ability to have a known charge time/ cycle but that's a bit complicated for here!

It’s a bypass capacitor ... no reason for replacing it. (There are several others in that area)
@ny4i
@ny4i 4 жыл бұрын
@@Try4Hard I agree with the bypass cap not NEEDING to be replaced. But there is something to be said if it ever breaks again and ends up at another repair shop, they may zero in on that as a cause. Then find out it was something else (after they replace it). While I agree it is not needed, seems trivial enough to add the cap back to avoid that issue and have it be 100% up to the engineer's design.

Found your channel today and have been binging your videos. Really love the work and will be picking some stuff up from your shop soon. I have really wanted to get into soldering and working on electronics like this. Any recommendation for a good soldering iron? How much should I expect to spend? $100? $250? Not really sure
@NorthridgeFix
@NorthridgeFix 4 жыл бұрын
Northing Specific to recommend. I use Weller WX2. We are working on carrying several models of soldering stations. Can't give any specifics before we try them. If you are doing this as a hobby, any cheap iron should do the job. Buy better equipment as you progress and you feel the need to. Read reviews and do your research. That's the best to learn.
@Robert-le2zp
@Robert-le2zp 4 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend a Hakko 951, although it's a bit above what you're expecting in terms of price. I just got myself a FM-203. The Hakko adjusts it's heat to make sure you're soldering at a constant temperature. With a cheap iron you don't get that, and you must set your temperatures higher to compensate for the heat loss, putting all your soldering projects at risk from heat damage. Upgrading from my $30 Iron, I was amazed at how easily my new Iron handled large solder joints.

This is a power filtering capacitor smoothing the voltage on one of the main power lines. Instead of having one large cap, there over 30 small ones connected in parallel. Removing one slightly lowers the total filtering capacity, but the effect is negligible.
