If only iPadOS would allow full width use of external monitors and extended screen support instead of the simple mirroring. The power is there. it could be a pocketable powerful computer... but its intentionally nerfed so it doesn't interfere with mac sales... just like macs don't get touch screens or 2-in-1 designs so they don't effect ipad sales.

i want a future iPadOS to include a "desktop mode" (MacOS lite) for when the device is hooked up to an external monitor. imagine having one device like an iPad Pro running normal iPadOS on the main touch screen, and then a lite version of MacOS on the external monitor. if i could have this then i may decide to use an iPad Pro as a main machine as opposed to a secondary machine.

This is a great demo for what the iPad mini can be. I was so jazzed a number of years ago when there was talk of implementing a Linux desktop on a phone when you plugged it into a dock. For me, the holy grail of computing is having a small touch device, phone sized, but having it transition to a desktop when docked. This has been doable for quite some time and with the power of the newest chips it’s easily doable with the right software. Microsoft, for one, totally blew this opportunity with Windows phone.

Thank you for this video. Well made. I've been using my iPad and Apple TV mirrored to the TV set in the classroom I work for several years now and it has really taken my teaching style to an entire new level. The advantage of using an Apple TV is that it is very easy to connect to a TV set with mirroring mode using Bluetooth/WiFi to connect to the iPad. And there is no need of WiFi network to mirror. This way the iPad is not tethered to the TV, so I can walk around the classroom with it as I like. There are so many things I can do this way. Like using the camera - just displaying to the TV set the iPad's camera viewfinder- I can walk around the students' desks to show to all the class a student's classwork, I can use the Apple Pencil to handwrite something and thus using the TV as a secondary whiteboard, it helps me to use markers less so my hands don't get dirty, I can snapshot a page from a textbook and using the pencil I can draw attention to something important, or zoom into something like a detail in a picture or to a single word. And all that while I am with my students, not sitting in a corner if I had to display the iPad physically tethered to the TV. Then I have everything on the iPad, lesson plans, books, videos, access to the internet via cellular so I am ready to any material I may need. The possibilities are limitless and carrying an iPad and an Apple TV is easy, both take less space than let say a laptop and in combination they are way, way more useful than any laptop.

What I just noticed, which I seems like has been totally overlooked, is that the new iPad Mini has a wider aspect ratio and thus the black bars on the external display are smaller than with any other iPad. @@JerrySchulze this is true but I feel like it’s a nice compromise aspect ratio between 4:3 and 16:19. My previous iPad mini 5 had a little too much of the black bars on the top and bottom while watching KZbin which is one of my top uses. I think Apple found a nice balance with the mini 6. Looking at the mini 5 and 6 side by side in landscape mode the mini 6’s black bars have been reduced by about 50% with this new aspect ratio. Since I use the mini 6 in landscape most of the time this is a Fantastic upgrade for my purposes.

For me as a software developer the Mini is just about the only mac I would even consider. The mac just doesn't work for my workflow as a daily driver carry around device and apple insists on hamstringing the iPad so it can't be your only carry either. But the mini kinda sorta works as a necessary evil since apple insists you own a mac if you want to develop for iOS / iPadOS... not that you need it for anything except to 'sign' your app for the app store... so its pretty much just another apple tax for developers. That said, the mini being the cheapest of the lot and the most usable since I can use it with my existing 4k monitors and thinkpad bluetooth keyboard instead of the horrendous keyboard apple provides.

Very interesting demonstration. There's a lot of unharnessed potential in these new iPad Mini devices. The one problem: the new Mini, when properly outfitted, can get quite expensive in a hurry. Then if you add a monitor, USB-C dock, cables, keyboard mouse, portable SSD, etc., it can cost more than a good laptop. (And it is not as portable if you want to lug all that extra equipment around with you.) Maybe there's another way to look at using a Mini as a super-portable computer: what kind of accessories can be added to a Mini to give it a cover/keyboard so that it could be used as a truly super-portable computer for note-taking, shopping lists (could you mount it to a shopping cart?) and a presentation tool (could you beam slideshows from a Mini to an overhead projector or TV wirelessly? If so, what equipment would you have to haul with you?)

What’s the hate for pages? Haha Thank you for the video!

mmm. I consider that Samsung's DEX has more possibilities with the desktop, you can even install linux to the device

I now have been working with my Ipad Mini 6 as a desktop for about 2 months now. Everything is great, but one thing I had not figured out until recently is how to scan a document (1 or more pages) from my HP all-in-one to my Ipad (going the other way-that is, printing, has been no problem via Air Print). But I just found that I can download the HP Smart software for ios to my Ipad, which I did, and after linking up each of my HP all-in-ones to my Ipad via the HP Smart software, I can now scan single or multiple page documents to my Ipad. I do not know for sure, but there are probably similar softwares available for people who have other brand of all-in-ones, such as Epson or Brother.

nice setup, is there a way to access a mac mini remotely from outside your home network using an ipad? I have an iPad pro with magic keyboard and I want to do that but I havent seen any videos on youtube doing it, If it is possible, will you be so kind and make one

Yes, there are a lot of remote desktop apps. I was using splashtop for a while. I feel like that is one of the better ones.

If you aren't creating content or code (although you could do that via a remote desktop connection) you could absolutely run a business just from an iPad - For example if you manage developers or creatives rather than do the work yourself. iPad is definitely the closest to a "do it all device" for a LOT of people

1 ipad for each room and occasion, perhaps ipad mini 3rd gen for the front of loft and ipad pro 2 for somewhere in the barn and 1 ipad for the barn door

I have an old iPad mini 4 that I've been debating between replacing the battery or buying the new 6. This is so helpful in making my decision. Thank you!!

Apple pencil just isn't backward compatible with my old 5th gen iPad. Way back I was about to shelve it if not for Adonit Pixel stylus pen that works on the 5th gen just like Apple pencil. I'm not much into extreme digital art but I do doodles and quick sketches on the 5th gen iPad before getting down seriously into the canvas.

Thank you so much for this. I’ve been mainly using my ipad mini 6 for the past 9 months. I love it’s purse size, battery power, and the perks of being able to work from literally anywhere. But, sometimes I do need a bigger screen. Will definitely try this!

I wish the iPhone could be that device. Run mobile apps on small screen, and iPad like apps when a monitor is connected.

Increase your Gamma in your video editing settings, your videos look dark and that would brighten them up for everyone's screen

That ROCKS. I did not know the iPad mini could do all that. I tried with mine and it works, extremely well. Thanks for the video!

I just looked at the IPad Mini yesterday at Best Buy, I thought it was a nice device. I see it would be great for business use. The size format is great.

The best rundown I have seen in a while. I been wanting to do this for a while. I got a new iPhone SE a few months ago downsized then got the iPad mini and the apple HomePod mini. I Currently use a Logitech K600 with the mouse & keyboard combo, and I have been using the ASUS Zen Screen portable monitor, matched up with ALOGIC Ultra USB-C Doc plus. All can be carried on the go if required or stored away as I live in an apartment.

Would be cool if you could use the iPad as a track pad like Samsung dex

I just wish the screen was a tiny bit wider. The OS makes a bit of vertical screen real state useless making the screen feel smaller than what it is.

You did a great job showing what the iPad mini is capable of. love it so much. I'm just curious if we can turn off the iPad's display and use the external display only?
@JerrySchulze2 жыл бұрын
Nope, the iPad only can mirror the display and needs to stay on.
