The livestream in conjunction with the release of the M1 was interesting, since it was Q&A with their lead engineer, and of course the iPad question came up, a lot of ppl in chat were asking. He said they had spent a lot of time working on their multi-platform workflow and cleaning up the code in the process, which took time but means it will be quicker to develop new features for multiple platforms, inc iPad in future. They didn’t reveal if they were working on an IPad version though, pointed out they didn’t discuss unannounced software or features. But the main issue on iPad was the file system and the touch interface, not the backend, it had to make sense on an iPad. It was a soIid “maybe”, on the proviso they prioritise new features for the desktop.

Thanks for putting this comparison together Roman! As someone who got influenced by other KZbin videos last year to buy an iPad for editing images I feel it’s important to add that neither Lightroom mobile nor Photoshop mobile have the ability to generate hdr images from bracketed shots or stich pano images. For whatever reason none of the photographers KZbin videos about iPads being used as editing device mention this. I’m aware that this is more a landscape centric issue and therefore doesn’t apply to your type of photography. I still thought I’d mention it here though. It has been heavily requested in Adobe forums by users to add these functions, but as of now there is no roadmap for the implementation of these features on mobile apps. This is the sole thing that is keeping me from moving my editing workflow 100% over to the iPad right now. Cheers

11:30 going from the 512GB to 1TB is not just "a little bit more" unless you consider a $300 price jump to be "just a little bit more". Granted tho the jump from 256 to 512 is a $200 jump. To conclude and summarize. IPad OS as it sits now is not made to make use of or really take advantage of more RAM in any meaningful way. The only reason to even go for 512GB of storage or more for the average user is if you think you will be installing a LOT of apps and also want to store a LOT of downloaded videos and music directly on to your device at the same time. Otherwise save your money and stick with a 256GB version which i think is the best overall value.

Awsome video, I really mean it. Very well presented, you delivered exactly what promised in the beginning of the video, your presentation skills were very nice and you made it technically just right (sound, lighting, proper skin colors etc). You can always tell if someone is coming from a photography or videography background. Nothing is attention grabbing, but everything fits together, just how it should be. Unfortunately, for me it's hard to decide if it's worth buying it for my needs. I love photography but only as a hobby. I already own a big home computer with a dedicated 32inch calibrated monitor and a macbook pro 16 on the go. But the setup is used for my engineering work mostly, photography is just my hobby. I mostly use AdobeCamera Raw with Photoshop or On1 RAW. So regarding to your last comparison section of the video, what are your thoughts as the ipad pro as an additional device to use in conjunction with a mac book pro on the go? Is the pencil etc worth an additional expense? Maybe you could share a few thoughts here.

Ended up sending my camera back to Fuji, Fuji replaced it because they believed it might have been sensor related; it wasn’t the camera. Lexar replaced both my SD cards, wasn’t that either. @@spaceshipdev yes Affinity Photo has a Raw develop module, I don’t personally use it, as I develop photos in bulk and like the adjustments in C1 and the results it gets a lot more. DAM means Digital Asset Management, it manages large volumes of images, it has a database of all the managed photos, and allows copying adjustments across groups of photos, making versions and viewing side-by-side, etc, whereas Affinity Photo is an image editor you open up individual files in. Once a Raw is opened in AP, you bake in your settings as a pixel image, which is good for cleaning up an image as the final stage in processing.

Can you calibrate the screen now on the iPad like you can Samsung s7+, which is fantastic for editing
@snapsbyfox3 жыл бұрын
no idea but doubt it. I have never calibrated any monitor in my life and never really needed to tbh especially on apple devices which are fairly good out of the box
@msandersen3 жыл бұрын
I doubt it with the sand boxing, unless Apple gives companies like Datacolor special system access. I do remember when I got my i1 Display calibrator a while back, they had a viewer app that could be calibrated, but it only worked with that app, because of the sandboxing. I don’t use it.

I use an iPad mini. iPad ios is a disappointment because you have to adopt a closed system with massive cloud capacity needs if you play by Adobe rules. I shoot fuji to two cards: Raw to one, jpg to the other. I use an sd card reader to the iPad since the fuji wifi app gets flakey. I import jpg with baked film sims, using app Maxcurve to adjust toe, heel and contrast. I add borders then I share them. For raw work I use a laptop then copy the LR catalog file over…. All of my edits transfer… there’s no different lightroom Mobil version, no folders limitation, no tiny screen. I think the whole iPad lure comes at a great cost of flexibility, security, and workflow. You have to do everything the iOS way, not your way. Incongruent ios file management compared to Mac OS is a deal killer for me. Example: I copied 400 photos from an ssd card into the ios folders. There was no way to copy them to camera foll to edit. Fail! Guys, stay away from iPad ios if you already have a Mac OS workflow with backup

Will the 2021 Pro be your only device or do you have a desktop? As a film photographer I still need a computer for scanning, file management,.....but my 2020 Air 4 has definitely become my primary editing and travel device. If I were strictly digital I could probably get by with just an iPad. I have no need for a laptop any longer.
@snapsbyfox3 жыл бұрын
it is my only device now. Sold my 11” already and the 16 MBP is gone too. Yeah scanning is a tricky one. Although does your scanner have a dedicated app? Maybe that cans support this? If not, you can always have a cheap desktop / laptop for scanning and cloud upload and then manage everywhere on ipad from there
@TwangThang573 жыл бұрын
@@snapsbyfox Pretty much what I do. No app, I have a 90s era Nikon Coolscan. Using Vuescan on a 2011 Macbook Pro running High Sierra. Macbook is set up as a desktop sharing a monitor, keyboard, and mouse with the iPad. IPad connectivity goes thru a hub, so one cable to unplug and go.

Apple is going to kill every PC, tablet & phone manufacturer in upcoming years. but for me only if they add a proper file management system on ipads and iphones. Writing this from my macbook pro m1 & its greatest LAPTOP i've ever used.

I'd be interested to know how you get on when the MBP is gone. I've mulled over this so much recently, and i just don't think i would be able to manage with just an iPad. I'm soooo tempted though! (on a side note - anyone else have to suffer 6 commercial breaks in this video - i very nearly hit the back button)
@snapsbyfox3 жыл бұрын
Well my MBP will be getting sold in the next week or two so I guess I will find out haha. I did ipad only before but it was on the 11 so didn’t enjoy it as much as that is too cramped tbh as a daily. Wait you had 6 adverts?! Agh so annoying, I usually set KZbin to do it automatically, just checked and it spammed the whole video. I removed a few of them. Thanks for highlighting this

I've found affinity photo doesn't seem to get the dynamic range out of my RAFs like PS or Capture One idk if this is just me. Curious on how you integrate the app into your workflow!
@snapsbyfox3 жыл бұрын
yeah i also agree. I only use Affinity to add finishing touches like cloning / spot healing on the finished image. 99% of the edit is always done either in LR or C1. Affinity photo’s raw developer is useless

I love the train B roll at 07:35 It's so sad that the iPad is the best tablet on the market. It is such a well-made and polished device but the company behind it is the complete opposite... Apple is arrogant, anti consumer and actively fights back against the Right to Repair. I just wish that Apple wouldn't be so incredibly toxic and would change to a better behaving company like Fairphone or Framework. They could do so much good with their resources instead of being straight up greedy AF. At least they recently attacked Facebook's main income source by giving users the option to opt out of Ad tracking, so they aren't a complete disaster... *Rant over.*
