The fact that it doesn't flip behind the tablet is a huge deal breaker for a lot of people. Taking it out of the case defeats the purpose of it being a case in the first place. I'm glad they didn't discontinue the smart folio because you are right; they are two products for different situations.

Really good analysis! You picked up on the wear factor better than any other reviewer I know of. Also, you made a good case (excuse the pun) for the smart keyboard even with the magic available. You pointed out that the smart keyboard is impervious to spills, which the magic keyboard is not. The two big factors you missed are weight and thickness, with the magic keyboard being much heavier and thicker. Add the magic keyboard to an iPad Pro and the weight is as much or more than a MacBook Air or an ultrabook. So portability is much reduced. In summary, I think that Apple's smart keyboard is smarter than we give it credit for.

You are the first reviewer to point out the esthetic low points of the magic keyboard, so thank you. For me, I do not plan on buying this case now not just because of that point but because of what other reviewers have pointed out. To me for the price, the versatility just is not there like you get with the smart folio case. Because if you wan the trackpad experience, you can just buy a trackpad but make sure you buy the trackpad 2. Also, by buying the trackpad 2 than going with the Magic two in one, is you get a bigger trackpad which comes in real handy if you are needing to use to create or any type of development. Also, if you are not satisfied with typing style found on the smart folio, you can just go with a different Bluetooth keyboard paring or different case. Because with the trackpad and for instance the Logitech folio keyboard case provides a great typing experience and paired with the trackpad 2 you still come out cheaper than the magic keyboard. Sorry if I recreated myself, but its late :) So to add to my review, actually my opinion. I ended up breaking down and buying the 12.9 inch Magic Keyboard case. I finally gave in since every reviewer had been raving about the typing experience of the case, and the preciseness of the trackpad and how it’s transformed the way people have been using their iPad. I will say, the typing experience is by far the best compared to all the typing keyboards I have used with my iPad Pro. This is comparing my experience with the Logitech Folio Keyboard case, Apple Folio Keyboard case, and then the Logitech Go Keyboard. The typing was the best on the Logitech Keyboards, and offered the most functionality, but they were just not very convenient to use. Now, the Magic Keyboard case is not functional unless you know the shortcuts, which I know some of them. However, their are no dedicated function keys like the previous Logitech options I mentioned. What I love about the Apple Magic Keyboard, is the TrackPad, and typing experience of the keyboard. I also like the build construction as its very sturdy but not very resistant to scratches or scuffs, but then neither was the original Folio keyboard case by Apple. The viewing angles are nice, and I do agree with other reviewers, that I wish it was a little bit more flexible, but the angles work for me, And I like now that I can lay down on my coach and have my iPad resting on my chest and still be able to use my iPad. I also like, that since the iPad floats and their are no moving parts in the keyboard portion, you can use the iPad on your lap and not worry about being uncomfortable from the heat of the iPad. I mean that applies more so to laptops, but its still nice. If you want a true Laptop experience using your iPad, I would recommend this case.

Oh, I bought it. I bought it so early that the web site was not really working but I persisted and had registered my order within 15 minutes after the hour. I am very pleased with the keyboard, the trackpad, the backlighting, and the integration with iOS 13.4. I use a lap desk most of the time but i have tried it in my lap and that works well too. Incidentally, I just bought PaperLike on your recommendation. The site does not support Apple Pay but the use of PayPal is so slick that the purchase was '"frictionless." I will amend this entry when I have had a chance to try it out. There have been lots of reviews of the Magic Keyboard on KZbin. I found yours to be the most helpful.

I got the Magic Keyboard Case for my 2018 iPad Pro 11" 2 days ago in the mail. I'm gonna try it for 14 days and return it. I'll live life without it until it goes on sale or something. This will give me the chance to really think about whether or not I actually need it for what I do with my iPad. So far I love it. I don't wear a case on any of my devises any way so I love the flexibility that it provides to use it like a laptop computer, but then to be able to grab the iPad off and use it as a fully featured tablet. I edited an entire video, starting off using mostly just the keyboard and trackpad, but then about halfway through I grabbed the iPad off of the Keyboard, left my dest and finished editing in LumaFusion with the Pencil.

Honestly I love it! I have the 11 inch and I’m soo happy i got this.... Yes there’s a few small flaws, but for me the pros DEFINITELY out-weigh the cons!!! This is a game changer in my opinion. Two things are about to happen, 1. Apps exclusively for Mac will soon come to iPad 2. With all the user feedback, the next keyboard is going to be absolutely amazing! I have the 11inch for portability, but in a year I’ll definitely get a 12.9 inch because by then the iPad Pro will be the new next laptop

So a re-vision to my original thoughts about the Magic Keyboard case. I have owned the accessory since it was released to the public. When I first bought it, I ended up taking it back because I could not justify the price because it wasn’t making my current productivity on the iPad Pro. After taking it back, I ended up trying to find alternatives that could offer the same experience in typing and look. Answer, I could not find an alternative that I liked, not even the Brydge Pro + keyboard. The BP+ case, felt like a product that was “almost there”, and the look of it just looks foreign when connected to the iPad Pro. Yes the BP+ does make the iPad Pro look more laptopish, but just not clean enough for me. So a week later I went back to the Magic Keyboard. Since my iPad Pro is my primary personal computer, i need my iPad to function both as an iPad and computer and the best way to do that is by having reliable accessories for your iPad Pro. Great video as always.

Been waiting for this review! Only one I can trust. I’m definitely switching to the magic keyboard because my iPad is my main “laptop”. But I am going to be crying when hitting that buy button for sure. But it’ll make a lot of sense for me. Thanks bro. Also, for anyone who uses their iPad as their primary “laptop”, I recommend just grabbing one of those cheap cases from amazon for those times when you want to write, draw or color. Especially if you are worried you could damage your iPad while it’s out of the keyboard case. I know for me, even using the Smart Keyboard right now, it always felt weird holding it in my hand when I wanted to write, color or draw. I would end up pressing the keys on the keyboard and although nothing happens, it is just the weirdest feeling lol.

I love my magic keyboard, but like Apple tends to do I think they over engineered it causing it to have more of a form over function feel. Instead of a floating design they could’ve just put a hinge on the back covering to mitigate the problem with rocking as well as the problem with a lack of angles.

Add up the cost of both the iPad Pro and the new Magic Keyboard. Now connect it either through hardwire or screen mirroring to an external 16:9 screen or projector. That 4:3 aspect display seems to let the air out of the “Pro” balloon and just may be the most expensive combo that doesn’t support native, os level 16:9 aspect external display. And while this may be ok small businesses that really have no need for conference room presentations, it can be a show stopper for most corporate “ Pro” customers.

Between the Magic Keyboard and the folio... is a tough one... The magic keyboard is great IF you want to use your iPad as a laptop 90% of the time and preferably at a desk, but this sort of makes it a bit redundant... and here’s the reasons: 1. Firstly, the price... for what it costs for an iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard to use it 90% of the time as a laptop, you might as well just get a MacBook, as it’s cheaper, lighter and uses far better materials plus you get the fully featured benefits of MacOS. 2. The trackpad, yeah it’s great don’t get me wrong and does change the way you use your iPad (but not really in a good way) as the touch screen and the touch based OS is like a giant trackpad already... the tiny trackpad on the magic keyboard is quite limiting vs just using the touch screen as intended, seems like a bit of an awkward back step for the iPad. 3. No tablet mode with the Magic Keyboard, means if you want to keep your iPad protected whilst using it as intended ‘a tablet’ you need an additional case of some sort. I just think Apple haven’t really nailed it with the Magic Keyboard and for the price it has quite a lot trade off’s, it seems as though this was a beta product which they felt was good enough to release as a 1st Gen product... but I would like to see a combination of the magic and folio in the future, ideally a magic keyboard folio which has the same keyboard as the magic keyboard, a track pad but has the ability to use it in a tablet mode.

The main reasons I’m replacing my Smart Keyboard Folio with the Magic Keyboard are 1) it’s backlit, and 2) the keyboard is much better and less mushy, and 3) my current keyboard stopped working. I’ve had my Smart Keyboard Folio since December 2018. 1 1/2 years later, it’s time for a replacement.

Great and honest review~! I have to agree that material build quality is lacking. I would expect more for either Smart or Magic cases to last at least a few years before seeing excessive wear. I had my Smart Keyboard for only 6 months and it looks like I've had it for years with the amount of wear on it. I was hoping the new Magic Keyboard would have improved that, but based on your review it hasn't especially for the much larger price tag. :( I do a lot more typing than drawing so I am contemplating on upgrading, but it hurts my pocket to do so for the material build quality. So I'm on the fence.....Plus I do like having the ability to flip it back when I use tablet mode on the Smart Keybaord. I like the Surface Pro keyboard design but not the functionality of the trackpad, nor the windows operating system that also lacks apps when using tablet mode.

I totally disagree with you about the Magic Keyboard cover , I had mine for the 12.9 iPad Pro 2020. Got it the same day the iPad came out or maybe a week apart. The cover is great!! You must be dragging yours behind your car. Where ever i go the iPad Pro goes with me. I use it a lot too. It does show little marks, but with a cotton cloth dipped in water rubs it away. Like it was never there. EXCELLENT PURCHASE!

The pitfalls of this case you mention, are the same pitfalls I have mentioned in other videos. I, however, received negative feedback towards them, but you proved them to be true in your video. this case is not productive as a note-taking device, nor to be used in any other orientation unless you detach the device from the case. I like the added port, but for me the moment I plug in a dongle I am set. What I don’t understand is, why couldn’t they have just done a clamshell design, but attach the iPad as shown, but instead of it stopping partway and allowing the iPad to float, why not or why couldn’t apple have created a hinge that would have allowed you to use the iPad as a laptop without floating and allow the hinge to go back even further so you could use the iPad in Media mode to watch movies and take handwritten notes or drawing. I wish I knew enough on how to make a 3D render of what I was talking about. UPDATE: I ended up buying the Smart Keyboard Magic case for my iPad Pro even though it has its drawbacks, I wanted to first-hand experience for myself those drawbacks to establishing my own opinion. After a few weeks with the case, I have determined that the case offers the best typing experience for your iPad Pro. Also, in my opinion, the case offers the best laptop experience for iPad Pro. The case is very sturdy and the magnets are a lot stronger than what is offered on the original folio keyboard for the iPad Pro 2018. Who I would recommend this keyboard case for is someone who is going to be stationary with their iPad Pro. Someone who is wanting a laptop experience with their iPad Pro. This case is especially for someone who plans on using their iPad for word processing and typing out notes. It's nice that Apple made it easy for you to remove your iPad from the case when you want to use it as a tablet. I tried to do that with the original folio case but I did not find it as convenient as the new Magic case. The case is overpriced to me, but what are you going to do :)

@@MoonBread_ yes, buy some cleansing wipes, wet wipes or anything like that, rub the wipe on a dry microfibres cloth to get the cloth a little damp and then use the slightly damp cloth (very slightly damp, it should not splash or spray), and wipe the keyboard and the whole folio cover. I also have a skin on mine (any skin, extreme skins or Dbrand, whatever), to protect the folio.

I just with it protected the iPad more. Sitting on the desk it looks fine, but if you pick it up to go, there is no protection against falls.

I’m still undecided , I plan to type a good amount on the keyboard but also to take a lot of handwritten notes and especially draw a lot but am also making it my main device for college that’s coming up for me next year hopefully so I’m really split in between the folio and magic keyboards

I think along with the Apple Watch, the iPad Pro and. Avid Keyboard are the best devices Apple makes. I am going to upgrade my iPad Pro 9.7” to the new one as I literally use it everyday. It has become my main computer. The new iPad and keyboard just makes for a brilliant laptop hybrid.

Canoopsy my biggest gripe is the trackpad size I keep going up and going past the trackpad top lol but I guess that’s something I’ll learn
