Apple wants you to buy an iPad AND a MacBook, not just one of them. That is why I doubt Apple will go into making the iPad (and iOS) so that it can actually replace a laptop. No mouse/trackpad support, no support for external storage, no multi-user. If these do not come with iOS 13 next year, then you can be sure Apple will not go that way before many years. Not before Apple is ready to dump the portable Mac completely. The Mac period. And that will not come soon. You will have Apple ARM Macs someday, and iOS apps that will run in macOS, but you will never have macOS run on an iPad. This would be "suiciding" the Mac from Apple.

Paul Van Obberghen I feel like right now, if anyone was in the market for a Mac book or Mac book air, they could easily save 400-700 dollars and buy the baseline iPad Pro 11 inch or the budget iPad Apple introduced at the education event or even last years 10.5 inch iPad Pro. The average consumer in the market for a 600$-800$ notebook is more than likely looking for a machine to complete basic tasks such as: -editing word documents -editing excel sheets -consuming digital media -light photo or video editing -checking email -making power point presentations -using social media All of these things can easily be performed on this years and last years iPads. Sure you might have to adapt to a slightly different work flow and buy a Bluetooth keyboard if you’re doing a ton of writing. Maybe you need a very specific desktop app for work that has no replacement on the iPad, that’s understandable too. However with the Microsoft office suite Available, the google work suite available, apples own document editing software available, and now a few adobe apps being ported over, its easier than ever for most people to replace their plastic 400$-700$ “netbook” with an iPad. I agree with your point that Apple won’t give users a desktop experience on the iPad anytime soon because it could cannibalize their MacBook and MacBook Air sales, maybe even the 13 inch MacBook Pro sales... and that really sucks! I’d love it if it was apples product lineup consisted of iPad pros and MacBook pros only, cutting out the lower end notebooks and replacing them with iPads is the future. Unfortunately with the big MacBook Air refresh it’ll be another few years before that happens, like you said. I kind of babbled on for a while but initially reading your comment AND watching MKBHD’s review I just wanted to point out that Apple isn’t necessarily gunning for iPads to replace MacBook pros and other 1500$-2000$ laptops yet. Right now they’re aiming for netbooks and sub 1000$ laptops. To me they’ve already done a superb job of getting their iPads to replace most of the products in that segment, which is an accomplishment and a big step towards iPads replacing laptops all together!

MacOS is a different platform with a UI designed to be used with a keyboard and a trackpad, to do other things. Do you have any clue what it’s gonna take to run MacOS with touch, especially since Apple is so uncompromising on user experience.Also, Apple’s processors are designed for iOS. Just because Apple has gotten really good at it, doesn’t mean you run MacOS on it. It means to push iOS to do more, and that doesn’t mean that it needs to be like MacOS. There’s AR and content creation and what not that can be done so well on an iOS device with a big screen. MacOS is a desktop OS. Don’t be confused here. iOS replacing a laptop is not the same as iOS replacing MacOS or Windows.

Things like being forced into apps by mobile safari kill me. The reason the chips are not yet in Mac is OSX is not written to work with the ARM chip architecture. While I’m sure a rewrite is underway bare in mind it’s taken over 10 years to get the current iteration of OSX this far. Not only does this apply for OSX itself but many older but updated apps written on old architecture This is why we don’t see Logic X on iPad. And again that GarageBand rewrite a few years ago now is probably the start of logic for iOS.

Unders This is not true. OSX was designed from day one to be architecture agnostic. That’s why Steve Jobs admitted from 10.0 they’ve been testing it on intel chips. The issue is a lot of software being compiled for x86 instead of ARM. But any app compiled in Xcode in the past 3-4 years had an option called bitcode that allows Apple to recompile it on the fly. This allows us developers to run iOS Apps in x86 and will allow 90% of apps to run on their own chips on day one.

@@hajjdawood I'm no software developer, but even I see that ARM is exponentially gaining ground ahead of Intel and x86. Performance vs efficiency is unbelievable. Windows ARM devices are really good, but most of the software is x86 and so needs emulation. Can't wait until its potential is realised by desktop software. Windows has already taken the leap into ARM. Hopefully macOS does the same soon.

That works but everytime you click on a link or just go to another place on the same website, it keeps loading the mobile version. So you have to keep asking for the desktop. One solution is to use browsers that actually do that better, as Puffin browser, but I wish Safari worked the same way.

No, that's not true. Just "kinda". It doesn't help in Marques' case: KZbin already redirects a mobile browser to a different URL altogether-reloading it doesn't get you the actual desktop webpage of KZbin, just the mobile version again (you'd have to tell it you're a desktop browser *before* loading the page). I have an iPad Pro myself, it's very frustrating indeed. You literally *can't* get the full desktop versions of a lot of websites. That's what he means and that's what they should make better.

It's a tough one because I'd guess that most iPad users are not the kind of power users that would need a more sophisticated file browser, which is ultimately what's holding the Pro back for people trying to use it for work. The trouble is, the fact that iOS doesn't allow you that granular access to the file system is the main reason why it's such a secure platform: iOS's sandboxing makes it virtually impossible to get a virus. I don't disagree that it's holding the iPad Pro back, but it'll be sad to see the OS lose that security benefit.

The full version of Photoshop coming to this is going to be the killer app for me. Supposed to be available sometime soon - but if I can edit photos AND have everything Photoshop has, such as auto-fill, and do touch-ups with the pencil, I'm sold. I currently have a 2015 iPad Pro I've been incredibly happy with, but the battery is finally starting to give out a little and the original Apple Pencil battery is doing the same - so that gives me as good of a reason as any to upgrade.

Also it really isn't as simple as slapping macOS , hundreds of millions maybe billions can go into making this move correctly and making macOS optimized for touch and ARM as well as getting enough time for the Apps makers to switch to ARM. they would also be priced higher because they will need more ram and faster storage to match the MBPs.

@Angus Agree. I have a Surface Pro 5 and I love it and will never replace it with anything else, but it just isn't very good as a tablet tablet, like playing app games and watching KZbin. Stuff like the Windows 10 on screen keyboard gets really annoying after a while! It being detachable is mainly for stuff like drawing and taking notes but not so much iPad tablet stuff - if I had to write a Microsoft Word document on a tablet without a keyboard, I'd choose the iPad.
