We all have iPads in our family over ten, and no one has ever complained about not having a native calculator app. As Apple said, devs have great calc apps, and there is no point upsetting devs by including an inferior system calc. Anyway, it is 2023, and a calc app is now old news; AI is what we should use for calculations.

People always need something to complain about. Why no weather app? Why no multitasking? Why no Files app? Why no widgets? Why no interactive widgets? Why no Final Cut Pro? Why no external monitor display support? Apple puts in the features and people find something else to complain about. In reality nobody gives a rat’s rear about a calculator app. If and when Apple releases one, I’ll bet they’ll find something else to hate on.

I think the iPad does more than enough for the vast majority, not niche users like YT influencers. The recent Q1 sales, up 20%, suggest that Apple, rather than random YT creators, knows its market. Of course, you cannot always please all the people, so there will be the perennial complainers, who probably should buy something else if using an iPad is such a hardship.

Apple focuses on different things on the iPad versus the iPhone. iPad has been focused on multitasking for the last several years, first adding split screen features, slide over, and then eventually Stage Manager, along with stuff like Universal Control, things that are totally unnecessary on an iPhone. That is why the code paths were separated. They aren’t being lazy. The iPad isn’t an iPhone and therefore has different requirements. The only real improvements iPhones ever make are to the camera, something nobody really cares about for the iPad. Still waiting on the iPhone to get any of the features I mentioned above. How about we get Final Cut Pro for iPhone? What, you mean iPad can do a lot of things an iPhone can’t?

I wish it could natively make phone calls with the cellular models, and that it could pair with an Apple Watch, but that’s it. I feel that as I spent less on my 256gb iPad Air M1, pencil, and keyboard case than I’d spend on a Macbook Air M1, and it does everything I personally would use a Macbook for (schoolwork) and more (better for content consumption and digital drawing), then I got my money’s worth. I’m not too bothered that it can’t do a couple things that only my phone can do. That said, I’d be pretty frustrated if I specifically wanted MacOS, but also wanted a touchscreen and a smaller 11-inch form factor, and simply could not find that combo on the market. It’s a little annoying when there’s no reason something *couldn’t* be a certain way but it *isn’t* for fear of cannibalizing sales.

Porting macOS on an 11-inch iPad would test Apple and likely fail as MS did with Windows Tablets. Any sensible person would look at history and try not to repeat it. @@andyH_EnglandIf you think putting a full computer OS on a tablet makes it not a tablet but a laptop with a detachable keyboard, fine, whatever, call it that. It’s just words. It can be used as a tablet or as a laptop, but call it whatever you want. If on the other hand you’re saying that a MacOS laptop with a detachable keyboard (as a *bonus*, mind you, not the main OS on the system) is a bad thing, simply do not use it. That’s like the people who think sideloading coming to iPhone is a bad thing because it “reduces security” - if something is literally an optional feature, then if you don’t like it, you can choose not to use it. Dual boot MacOS/iPadOS literally could not hurt anything other than Macbook sales. Unfortunately that’s the only thing it needs to hurt for Apple to never do it.

Agreed! It sounds like the larger iPad will be coming early next year if the leaks are correct.

iPad Air M1 owner here, the 11-inch display is right on the edge of comfortable usability. I feel like 11 inches is the perfect size to thread the needle between too small for tabletop and too big for handheld, making it versatile. So having never used a 13-inch iPad before - what’s the appeal, and why would you want a 15 inch iPad screen? At that size, wouldn’t it be totally impractical to use handheld? At which point the only reason to even have a touchscreen is for use with the Apple Pencil, right? So if a 15-inch iPad was on the market, why buy that over a 15-inch Macbook?

@@sparky6757 Yes for the Apple Pencil input but also to use as an external monitor. I have a Mac Mini M1 and I like connecting my iPad Pro via USB C and I have a Mini LED display with Mac OS. It is also great as a drawing canvas.

@@KadMac25 Seems like a pretty expensive way to get an external monitor, but I suppose it’s one of the only options to get a big external monitor and a drawing tablet in one device, and you can’t put a price on convenience. $1100 might not be a price **I** would pay for convenience but I can understand it at least.

I'll give a couple more use cases for the appeal of a larger iPad, in addition to the external monitor (find me an external monitor that can work wirelessly and has pen input and that aspect ration by the way). Some people don't want to have a TV, they want to watch movies and series and be able to move from room to room. This does not mean they hold their device for 2-3 hours. Some buy a case with a kickstand, others (like me) have tablet stands in every room. When I compare my 12.9 to my Tab S8 ultra, watching movies on the larger one is sooo much better.... Also reading PDFs (magazines, business documents) in portrait mode, the bigger the better. And again you don't need to hold, you can have a stand on your desk. People that only use their tablets on their couch believe everyone must do the same. I have many tablets but never use any on a couch...

I am low-key mad you didnt throw the ipad cover away for the "catch" and then reversed the footage in editing lol

I think that you should buy the product for what it is and not for what it could possibly become. Apple isn’t going to turn iPad into a MacBook replacement because why would Macs even exist then? Also I don’t think that adding the optimised battery charging and the calculator app would do much for many people. iPads are meant to be used for consuming media or playing games or taking notes for some people. I never really got the point why people buy the expensive keyboards thinking that they should be MacBooks when in reality it’s it’s own thing.

MacBooks are your Batman, they do everything and they are efficient and cool. iPads are like Robin, they are cool but still just a side kick to Batman and yes some Robins become Nightwing or the Red Hood (iPad pros). But they still no Batman.

I thought they couldn’t downgrade even more the iPad and they did on iPadOS 17… There’s not a volume slider on the lockscreen anymore. It’s just like the iPhone on iOS 16. USELESS… To do a simple action like changing the volume I now have to either scroll and slide on the control center or touch the volume buttons. Before it was a simple gesture, now they’ve complicated even more

I literally can’t understand why there isn’t the calculator app on the iPad. It just makes no sense whatsoever and would be so useful. 🤷♂️🤦♂️

I believe Apple is towing that line as long as they can, because they know eventually one day in the future they will have no choice but to merge Mac and iPadOS
@andyH_England Жыл бұрын
That will never happen as that would be a terrible business decision! Thankfully Apple has people that know what they are doing and understand that merging the two has zero upsides but could be a catastrophic business move.
@Johnlmooring Жыл бұрын
@@andyH_England it’s going to happen in the future. IPadOS is only going to go so far and the MacBook design is getting dated. But when it happens, even if it’s 10 years from now I’ll be sure to revisit this post.
