I am not allowed to install the latest version of MacOS, apparently my 12 core Xeon processors, 64GB of RAM and GTX 980 don't meet the system requirements but a laptop with a core i5, 4gb of RAM and an integrated GPU oh yeah thats fine.... Funny that as soon as the new Mac Pro came out mine was suddenly "obsolete". I cannot even hack the OS to upgrade as my current graphics card has no drivers, Nvidia states "Apple fully controls drivers for Mac OS. But if Apple allows, our engineers are ready... [to] deliver great drivers..." - September 2018 They think they can get me to buy a new computer, yeah right. My next computer will be a Windows PC.

@@HughJeffreys I believe Apple holds a grudge with Nvidia that they cant get over (or wants to make an example of) and refuses to work with them in any way.
That might be about to change though seeing as Nvidia just bought Arm Holdings.
I think it stemmed from a line of Nvidia chips being faulty in MacBooks and Nvidia refusing to pay for the replacements / fix. Intergrated Intel or AMD graphics cards / eGPUs should be compatible. Yea its quite disappointing they only provide 7 years software support from the date of release. This wouldn't be a problem if Apple worked more closely with third party repair firms in the first place. If it's going to lock down it's phones in an attempt to deter non-genuine parts being used, then Apple and Samsung (Apple the most) should be working more closely with third party repair firms so that they have access to genuine parts more. That would be so evil... I remember Samsung basically did that with the Galaxy Note 7, but only because it was recalled and banned on flights due to the severe "battery catching fire" issues - they had eventually sent out an update that first limited the battery to 60%. Later on, I believe they sent an update that blocked charging - essentially disabling itself and being left to die. So, it is theoretically possible for any manufacturer to disable phones, but I don't think they would be able to without either running into legal issues, or having severe backlash. Unless it was recalled due to a serious issue, like the Galaxy Note 7.

Apple is ingenious at this for a long time by now. I wouldn't be surprised if they've already paired anything that talks to the motherboard. Once that's done, they can activate checking for paired components at will through software (like the OS) and take any kind of action they feel appropriate. One update could disable camera. Next update could also disable battery. And so on and so on. That would be my guess. The beauty of a system like this (for Apples sake) is if laws are passed that force Apple to not do this, they could easily reverse any restrictions enabled by disabling all restrictions with one software update. Again, just a guess.

Honestly I think the average person doesn't care about this issue. If their phone breaks they'll either just live with it or take it to get repaired. And even if they knew about this policy they'd probably still buy from Apple regardless. We just need to find a way to convince the average user (who isn't interested in the technology or doesn't care) to stop buying from Apple or to highlight the issue

@@Diddydudat Most people don’t back up their data and I agree with you it’s reckless. That being said, it has nothing to do with Apple doing all in their power to limit the ability of their customers to repair or recover data from the devices they have paid for and own. Pairing Touch ID could have a pass due to security reasons... pairing a camera, a screen or a Taptic Engine to the motherboard has no excuse. Samsung has seen the potential of this is slowly but relentlessly following this same path. As I said, customers are the last thing on their minds.

I live in the US, and work retail for one of the major mobile ISPs. My location does repairs for apple because our technicians must go through a full apple certification and test when a new phone comes out. For what I've observed is that Apple supplies our technicians with a calibration software ( a MacBook Air with only that software installed) to calibrate the phones after they are serviced. 98% of the phones they repair walk away with fully functional repaired devices with no issues. The other 2% is phones that fail the calibration and we order the customer a free replacement. Yes your swap is from two brand new phones but I think the phone needs it's software to understand that it was done properly.

Instead of pairing parts serial number to phones, it would have been great if the original parts could be verified somehow, using a system menu or something and just provide the user to verify it using some menu/settings maybe, instead of preventing the phone/camera/touch id etc. from working altogether, and having crazy notifications on every boot. I would actually love the ability to verify the parts I'm getting is genuine, because I had some experience with 'authorised' service centres using fake parts, which gave me problems just a week after the repair.

It’s definitely a good step forward allowing non genuine cameras (or genuine) to work correctly but with a message saying it’s not genuine. I like that they give messages for parts that have been replaced and aren’t paired by Apple, as it means if I were to buy a used iPhone I can be sure that I’m getting key original parts. The battery health might not ever show up as Apple can’t ensure that the battery health is up to standard on a 3rd party battery. The same could be said with the display but the fact that you can reprogram the screen and get True Tone shows that’s not the case (True Tone is after all only a software filter that is adjusted by sensors). I still want to see all tech companies have genuine parts available so that 3rd party repairs are possible and say with the tools and guides being available as well. I also find it ironic that Samsung with the A series made part swaps (the finger print sensor) not work via a software update yet Apple did the opposite and now allowed the cameras to work correctly when swapped.

Apparently the unable to verify camera message can pop up even with the original camera the phone came with. I work at a third party repair shop and I actually had a customer come in today with an iPhone 12 Pro wanting to replace his screen protector because his broke but the drop that broke his protector also seems to have damaged his rear camera because it started giving the "Important Camera Message" warning in his settings. When we opened the camera app pressing the button to change the zoom levels also didn't work at all, it was just stuck on the 1x zoom. The phone had never been opened up or worked on before and is running the current ios 14.4. This is the first time we've seen something like that here so it may be a one off fluke, but at least in some specific circumstances it can give the message with a phone's original camera.
