iPhone 13 Pro - Cinematic Video Footage (4K)

Really set myself a challenge this week to not only film some video samples on the iPhone 13 Pro but also to create and edit an entire video on it! Everything has been shot on Filmic Pro (no ProRes just yet) using a mix of all three lenses. All handheld or tripod with some stabilisation applied on certain shots. Finally everything has been edited in LumaFusion.

I am on the cusp of upgrading to an iPhone 13 Pro; the 1TB version will be necessary. The lightening port issue is a little off-putting; but, it seems to me the quality will be well worth the wait. As an entry level tool for cinematography, I think the iPhone 13 Pro is perfect. The fact that Filmic Pro has updated it’s app to handle ProRes is encouraging me to take the leap. It’s very exciting. Thanks for your video; it has helped me to decide.👍 I noticed the duck taking off from the pond in your video, it judders a little; are you sure that you used 24 frames per second, and a shutter speed of 1/50th? Other than that, great quality. A suggestion for a title…. “Shindler’s Lift.”….. just joking.

Hey Rich, glad to hear it helped you out. In terms of the shutter speed, it's because I don't have any ND filters for the iPhone 13 just yet. So if you want to get the correct exposure in harsh sun, you need to crank the shutter right up. That would be my recommendation for an accessory if you end up purchasing that iPhone. Good luck!

@@MattQuattro I have been experimenting with an anamorphic lens, and 24fps, and a variable neutral density filter, on my iPhone seven. The potential of grading in ProRes is really exciting. One of the give always, with iPhone cinematography, is that little green flare…. using an anamorphic lens the flares are horizontal; replacing that circular green flare you get with a spherical lens, with the horizontal flare you get with an anamorphic lens. In “CinemaScope” as well. Most people don’t seem to realise the true potential of iPhone cinematography now. Everyone can get powerful messages across; from their pockets. Good content deserves competent treatment. Anyway, thanks again, your video really inspired me to choose the right upgrade. The quality was really good. But, to be really honest, I don’t expect I’ll be using cinematic mode much; it seemed too obvious. I don’t believe in luck, so I’ll say God bless. Keep up the good work.

Thank you! Yes I’ve owned several GoPros over the years but always ended up selling them because I couldn’t find much need.

It’s noteworthy seeing how the cinematic mode feature only focused on your face and was figuring out the depth to which your hands were blurred in relation to the camera on the table each time you gesticulated.

Yes very good point. I think it did quite well, but you could see it struggle on the left hand side between my arm and torso. Sadly it’s still these natural gaps which are very challenging for the feature to work properly in. Thanks for your feedback as always Ken!

AI is a poor substitute for manual control…. It’s got a LONG way to go before it can replace human judgement; and, it’s only 1080p. The ProRes footage blows it away.
