This year Apple introduced a big change to the iPhone line-up. With new iPhone 14 Pro we finally got a massive camera upgrade. Main sensor is now 48mp instead of 12mp. But to use those big pixels you need to shoot RAW, not jpg. Is it worth it? Is it worth vs JPGs files that can produce beautiful bokeh and how does it all compare with full frame camera - Sony A7IV.

With those really dark images I've found if you switch the color profile in Lightroom to Apple ProRAW it seems to make it closer to the correct exposure. On some images the default "Apple Embedded Color Profile" seems fine.

iPhone photography has one big problem. It kills my yearly fantasy of a Personal Everyday Camera to document my life. Many hours of research into the Ricoh GR, Fuji X100 or Leica Q go to waste thanks to the iPhone. None of those camera can touch the convenience of your phone. So next time I get hyped about a new personal camera, I will read this comment to remind me of my idiocy.

The BEST, by a VERY long way, in-depth brilliantly done, and balanced review I have seen so far. It's so much better watching another photographer's take and feedback on this and any other camera phone. Someone who took the time to set and execute a great little shoot to truly test the product properly. Let's face it for any of us that only really care about just how good the camera is, as most modern phones are capable of doing everything else we need, having a proper shoot and comparison done compared to the gear we normally use, your Sony, my Canon, it doesn't matter, it just lets us truly evaluate the product at a level we can't help but want to compare it to, massive well done and thanks 07

IMO dedicated cameras shine when using them with wide aperture lenses like 1.4 or 1.2 for portraits or low light photography, or telephoto lenses for portraits (70-200) or wildlife (100-400 or 150-600). Phone cameras can't match dedicated cameras in these regard.

Low light video recording, not photo - as iPhone now can do longer exposures which can look better and have lens nearly as wide (1.7)
@SuttonBen
@SuttonBen 2 жыл бұрын
@@whitecrowuk575 night modes are definitely a big plus for phones. However, the lens aperture shouldn't be taken as a good measure of lowlight capability. Smaller sensors will take in less overall light and so require more gain to achieve the same exposure. That means more noise in the image.

@@SuttonBen in standard photography yes, (or video recording) but with computational it’s being processed to a degree that’s actually not bad looking and usable - better than majority of cheaper cropped frame cameras.

In well lit environments and with stationary subjects, any phone camera will do wonderfully (Basic portraits and family scenes). Their technology has advanced quite well and it's a very powerful system for something so small. In large landscapes, macro, creative portraits, long exposure, sporting shoots, double exposures, the DSLR and Mirrorless will reign supreme and won't be going anywhere any time soon. They're a creative tool! :) Phone's may be a jack of all trades, but they're certainly not the masters of one, unlike dedicated cameras. :)

A couple of things to mention: LENS HOOD - your backlit image of the couple has lens flare. Using a camera and lens with a lens hood should reduce this. FOCAL LENGTH - I prefer to use a longer focal length for portraits (a minimum of 85mm on a full frame camera) FILL FLASH - I prefer to use fill flash with virtually all of my portrait work PROFESSIONAL LOOK - not the image; You! Using a camera with a decent size lens makes you look more like a professional. I am ordering a iPhone 14 Pro Max and will shoot stills with it occasionally but, will shoot a lot of videos with it. STABILIZATION Although the 14 Pro Max has stabilization - I would use the phone for video on my G6Max gimbal.

@@MagicWeddingPhotographer none. It's a completely different market. Professional cameras will remain professional cameras, without computational handholding IMO. If that day ever comes - then the camera dies - as there will no longer be a valid reason to buy a camera, when all the technology is already on a phone. It's all about perception, which is the very reason I will never take a phone to a professional gig e.g. wedding photography

@@MagicWeddingPhotographer well they behind way behind in this respect. It’s totally different know how and they would have to invest heavily. @@MagicWeddingPhotographer Camera manufacturers have been utilizing computational photography for quite some time.
