These comparisons always use still / staged shots. It’s when motion is involved that stacking techniques cannot be used or simply don’t work. Also, by using a raw file, you really are exposing more of the editing software rendition than anything else. Especially since you guys commented on how you preferred the warmth of several photos, this was entirely a choice set by the editor as raw data doesn’t have a fixed white balance.

22 for iphone based on what i liked. To be honest it became fairly easy to distinguish between the two as the Sony tended to be more on the warmer side and, often, slightly out of focus especially in portraits. Also, maybe next time use matching lenses. i.e. 120mm for the sony.

I have the iPhone 15 Pro. I have almost exclusively been taking raw photos with the iPhone camera. If there is plenty of light, pictures of static objects turn out just fine. However, pictures in low light situations result in noisy images. Certainly, if I let the iPhone exposure bracket, noise performance may improve. Additionally, any points of lights in the image result in significant lighting artifacts which render the image a throwaway. The camera of the iPhone certainly has its use-cases but by no means is it a substitute for even a semi-pro camera system. It must be remembered that the full-frame equivalent of the aperture of the iPhone can be anywhere from 10 to 20 depending on the lens that is used since the iPhone sensor is small relative even to even the size of a crop sensor. You don't get something for nothing.

A couple of disagreements with your choices (I thought the Columbus statue had more detail on the Sony) but overall, I was quite shocked at how comparable the iPhone is now to a professional camera. The one thing I did notice is that the small lens of the iPhone imparts angles to tall buildings in certain shots but I'm sure they'll eventually work out a way to overcome the limitations of physics!

I use my phone more than my actual camera, but there is something fun about being able to choose the lens and settings yourself and work for that shot. Just dont have much time to use the camera so thats where the phone comes in. Quick, easy, lightweight, and relatively equal in most circumstances. I found myself choosing an equal amount of iPhone and Sony shots. More iPhone shots at night.

I preferred the Sony more simply because it was obvious there was less processing and a lot more data that I could edit myself. If I was just going with snapshots that I didn't expect to edit in post then the iPhone Pro Max would be a good choice considering the quality of photos along with all the ease of use in having a phone with me at all times. Thing is that out of camera photos always look bad from an HDR point of view because you cannot show all the dynamic range in a single frame. They are designed to just capture the data that you then play with as you like to play with. If you did adjust the RAWs properly, the phone wouldn't come close. I'll also say that phones bring things like skies down too much. Sure, more theoretical dynamic range, but the photo often looks fake. No sky ever looks that blue everywhere. There are gradations from white to blue

It was a little hard to tell on my 1080 little monitor... I was surprised at the results though. Some of it confused me. In the city photo, I didn't expect that much artifacting in the dark sky area on the Sony... I thought that would've been the iPhone. I figured the big cameras would handle that sort of thing in night photos far better. I'd actually like to see close-ups of some of those photos though. If you blew them up would you see a difference? Overall I was still preferring the Sony... I think you can do more post editing in Raw if you want some of those effects. But... if you're just out and about, I can see how just carrying a phone is far easier.

The iPhone is really good and for a lot of people their go to camera these days. But as a professional photographer myself, and having both of the Sony and the iPhone, I can straight away point out the lack of skill that these guys have in using a professional camera, and also the type of lens they are using. There are so many factors that go into getting good professional level photos on a professional camera like the lens, the settings you are shooting with and how you are shooting. Doing this kind of a beginner level point and shoot comparison without actually utilizing the Sony’s full potential is not how photo comparisons are done. There are so many other KZbin channels where professional photographers have done this comparison and that is the right way to do it. I am sorry, but this a terrible way of comparing the devices. So, stop giving people the wrong advice about what they should invest in.

Lack the very same skill their entire career I focused on? And you're telling me that in order to make full use of a 5000 USD camera, you need more photography skill than a bunch of professional wedding photographers who run a successful videography and photography channel and that the only way that professional cameras are better than smartphone cameras is if we do and compare all the other things that a smartphone camera physically cannot do due to their smaller form factor, and completely disregard the things that the smartphone camera can do in regards to the same capacity of a professional camera?

I guess it depends on the situation. For general snaps when I'm out and about it would be iPhone every time. It's just more convenient and you don't look like a nerd when you get it out. However I've photographed a lot of live music events in very low light and there is no way any phone compares to any full-frame camera with a fast prime lens in these conditions. I've done a side, by side comparison and it is night and day. Likewise if I were photographing anything fast like wildlife or sports, phones just can't compete here.

If you have no intentions of doing any post processing, there's not going to be enough difference for most people to notice between iphone pro 12 or newer vs a current full-frame mirrorless. @@MaxTechOfficial My bad, I stand corrected. The iphone still do its HDR auto blending in RAW mode? Either way, it's only real win is convenience. Simple physics of small sensor vs full-frame. iPhone is doing a lot of magic in the background to try and close that gap, but only so much you can do there. The further you get from ideal conditions, the more the bigger sensor will shine. If canon or sony ever decided to partner with apple for a full-frame mirrorless, it would be game over for the competition.

Sony is really good at video these days. Or like photos of moving objects like trying to take a picture of my kid playing at the playground or taking a picture of someone rollerblading down a New York City Avenue. I just wonder since it has to do all this computation and stacking multiple images can it keep up in video or with moving subjects. I mean it’s great at taking a still photo or portrait. Especially when you punch in and look at the edges of things, you start to see all of the processing artifacts and the smoothing to hide the blocky color gradients and stuff. In closing they state don't spend 5k on a mirrorless camera, just use an iPhone. While it is true that in some cases a good picture is easier to get from the iPhone, they fail to mention the many advantages the pro camera has, that can't be replicated with an iPhone. There is a reason it costs 5K! And if your going to do a review on image quality on a small laptop screen, and not compare quality based on a 100% crops, it proves nothing. Each device has their strengths and should be used accordingly depending on the situation.

@skyscraperfan
@skyscraperfan 6 ай бұрын
No, you do not get 95% of the performance. Those photos only look good on a screen, which has a very limited resolution. The sensor of an iPhone is just so tiny and if you take a 3x or 4x photo, the iPhone will only use 1/9 or 1/16 of that tiny sensor respectively. The iPhone does heavy image processing that could be done much better with the data of a full frame sensor. The advantage of an iPhone is that it takes a lot of photos with different exposures and the ads it to an HDR photo. Sony just released a camera though that can shoot 120 photos per second in RAW. Giving such a camera the option to take lots of differently exposed photos within a fraction of a second is something that could be done with a firmware update. The only thing a professional camera does not have is the LIDAR sensor, which allows the iPhone to save depth information with every photo. So yes, Apple should really develop a full frame camera. Then the results would be much better.

Lol. No, because a video comparison between the two is not easily skewed as photographs. Very misleading.

Okay. There's an opinion that guys should've used a straight-out-of camera JPEG. No, they shouldn't have. Modern camera's algorithms are miles behind modern phones. Because no real buyer actually needs straight-out-of-camera JPEGs all that much. When you buy a camera - you buy it to capture larger dynamic range and use other bigger sensor advantages like low-light performance or shallow depth of field or sometimes even double ISO. If you're a real professional - you would pick RAW over JPG 100 times of 100 to have as much control of the photo as you can. And built-in JPEGs are just reference points, for example - to view photos faster in the viewer and pick ones that are worth of post-processing. Or just to have a generalized understanding of the scene through the built-in algorithms. So guys actually did what they could to get the most out of the camera, at least in terms of choosing a format. Mobile JPEGs are nowhere near camera's RAWs in terms of recovering data from overblown and overly dark areas. Max and Vadim used the best of both worlds. Strength of the camera is a RAW because camera's JPEG algorithms still really sucks. Strength of the iPhone is in it's camera algorithms that binds like ten photos together with different settings and masking and fine-tuning everything that can look better than it is. iPhone's ProRaw though is still good, but it's dynamic range is still not even close to camera. Now for the exposing I have a few questions. Why exposing for a tree and then recover faces from the RAW if you can expose for the face? It's the actual most important object of the photo. Plus there's always the quality of the lens in this formula, and the size of the sensor itself, and even the brand's color science. Too much variables to get ONE straight objective answer. What I can get from this video though is iPhones got crazy good in terms of the photos in auto-settings. So crazy that they can most of the times compete with camera if you don't have the best sensor and lens, and, most importantly, skill. Thanks for the video guys!

Also it's not clarified if Sony was on auto-settings, which are mostly bad, or if it was a manual mode or aperture priority etc. If it's an auto exposure it would explain a lot of things, but still not the best way to use a camera

Sony - 25 IP -10 iPhone does great capturing daytime sky with it dynamic range processing compared to pro camera Brought the new Q3, A7R5 & 14Pro to Europe 3wks ago…. I just used the Q3 and IP with the 7R5 kept in the hotel room safe in the end ..without a doubt shooting with the Q3 & A7R5 is way more fun, immersive & joyful experience

You can see straight away the *Sony* has much smoother depth, color roll off, detail in highlights while the iphone looks over processed, digitised looking. if weight is an issue when traveling (own 5D4) i use *The G1 X Mark III* (or if you have *G7x* ) which still has much better IQ than iphone

Respectfully, Although I preferred many of the “out of camera” iPhone shots in this presentation, I feel that I could have taken the RAW Sony images and made most of them look superior using Lightroom or another processing app. Before digital, having good darkroom skills was part of the difference between novice and a pro, honestly I am not sure that has changed. Mind you, I just purchased an iPhone 15 because I was sick of people with phones getting decent captures that I missed because I didn’t have a passable camera with me, but the idea that it’s comparable to a pro rig is a stretch in my opinion. Algorithmic photography is a bit of an issue in my mind, it will never make the same choices a seasoned photographer would make and people relinquishing that control is a sad trade for me. It’s here, it’s not going away, and myself and others like me need to adjust to that world… but please stop promoting the idea that the algorithms and automation in these phones can replace skill.

Whoever took these photographs had no idea how to use a pro camera. At 17:00 , whoever took the one on the right obviously make that look bad on purpose. The strawberries are more blurry on the right than the left.. Yeah.. Ok.

Almost in each and every photo, sony was superior. For instance in first photo, you can clearly see that the iphone looks artificial with stylistic rendition to sky and face whereas sony keeps the warm evening look and the sky wasn't blown out as said by one of the members. Its just how an evening sky looks like.

Fun test but come on, guys, do people shell out the readies to buy full frame sensor cameras just to take point and shoot shots for social media?! I hope not. The magic happens when you work in post on those huge RAW files, can do it in seconds while browsing. Not to say there aren't some situations where a smartphones AI processing doesn't pull off remarkable wins but you know what I mean.

With the right processing, any Sony mirrorless from recent years would demolish any current mobile device, not least a high spec example like this 🤣 Sure there are some shots where the mobile looks pretty good at first glance, but under any decent scrutiny (i.e. not half of a 14 inch laptop display) the mobile would be trailing.

ITs important to mention did you use aperture priority for the Sony? What kind of metering it was? I personally have find out that is better just to underexpose a little bit with the Sony

And there is the point, using the iPhone is easy and although the Sony would easily beat the iPhone it would need some post processing which requires time effort and skill. I gave up “serious” photography some of which i earned a living from for iPhone photography, my back and bank balance are a lot better now.

If you can't afford a full frame camera that is another story. I'm pretty sure if the Sony photos were taken with a prime like the GM 24mm difference would have been very very easy to discern. Also they should have not used the fake bokeh. Lr now can also do fake bokeh which is better than iphones. Also many great apps for fake bokeh if this is what you want.@@hypo345

I mean it's cool to see how phones have evolved, but if you ever owned a real camera you could easily say which shot was taken by the phone. They are still plagued with oversharpening. But I believe that sooner or later phones will start to use 1" sensor a then it's gonna be fun

The term "1 inch sensor" is just marketing though. Nothing about the sensor is one inch big. Not even the diagonal. The term "1 inch sensor" comes from very ancient cameras, which had vacuum tubes.
