Agreed, it'd be nice to see someone do a very deep dive into that(alongside the extra digital ""lenses"" and what quality loss there is with them). Once you get into those extreme digital zoom ranges, the reality is that virtually any usable image is good enough for what you usually are typically trying to get out of it. From what I've seen in other reviews, while 3x is okay on the Pro Max, 4x-4.9x is just destroyed. That's a massive weakness and tradeoff imo, given the 5x lens' advantages get the most obvious at those borderline gimmicky zoom levels.

this comparision is needed, while doing 15x zoom is it only using main camera or main camera + telescope? because telescope lens uses only upto 5x, but how 15 x is better in 15 pro max than 15 pro, because both sensors are main sensors and using same camera and algorithm, if I am wrong please correct me any one. and every nX zoom need to be tested (1x, 2x,3x,4x, 4.9x, 5x,and all compare with pro model) and video zoom too, video zoom is same in both models. so compare them with stabilization. and every zoom level portrait edge and how the depth effect is. Test the zoom levels with text details where light is uneven/and even

@@gwenc1371 I think it just depends on what you use more frequently. I like to travel, parks, zoos, art festivals, I want as much zoom as I can get, so I'm excited about the 5x. I never wanted a "big" phone, but I'm willing to deal with it because the 3x just doesn't feel like I'm getting a tight shot. You can digitally zoom from there, but the image starts to degrade pretty quick, much like you noted about 4x-4.9x. I read the equivalent lenses for 14 pro max are 13mm, 24mm, 48mm and 77mm (the main sensor used for 24 and 48). When I bring my DSLR most places, I usually have a 17-55, and a 70-200mm, which I use zoomed most of the way. It's great for getting in tight on animals, performers, athletes. The 5x is 120mm and will finally get me back in the ballpark. BUT 77mm is a great length for portraits, so if that's what you want, you're absolutely right. It's a weakness. I'd be curious to hear how far backward or forward you have to move to get equivalent framing with the 48mm or 120mm.

One thing to keep in mind is the minimum focus distance is longer on the 5x optical, so for close ups you are going to be relegated to similar subject magnification and framing with different compression / flatness to the image.

Wow this clarified for me that I’ll be definitely getting iPhone 15 Pro instead of the max. EDIT: it's because 3x zoom is much more practical in daily life than 5x and above. If 3x zoom is more clear on iPhone 15 Pro, I'm definitely choosing that over the max. Let's be real I'm not taking a photo of the moon everyday but if I'm sitting at the backseat at some concert, 3x much more useful. 5x zooms into the face of the person who is singing on the stage which I don't need it unless very rarely the artist is at the stadium or something and I'm sitting all the way at the top and far away. Also, iPhone 15 Pro Max is HUGEEEE. 5x vs the phone being that huge is not enough a tradeoff for me. I want a phone that fits in my pocket as a man. We don't carry purses like women. If I was a woman, I'd maybe be more inclined towards the max just because it would be easier to carry it.

From what I can see here, the cropped 5x on the Pro (7:27) looks better than the cropped 3x on the Pro Max (6:59). Also, the 5x camera on the Pro Max needs a lot of light because its effective aperture is very small. Things to keep in mind...

Just my 2 cents, I would suggest taking PM if you don't mind with the bulky phone with better battery life & slightly expensive. 1st reason: 5x lens or even 25x zoom in PM may be unnecessary most of the time but you will regret not getting it if you miss those fantastic moments due to the limit in Pro. Examples of taking pictures of your cats fighting far away from you, fantastic scenery pictures which are far further away, or even pictures of running sports or F1 cars. 2nd reason: Let's admit that you won't take portraits/pictures of 3x - 4.9 x. The name of the lens tells you clearly that it's for "telescopic" use. Apparently, 1x & 2x lenses are good enough for most portraits and you just have to sacrifice in between in return for the special use of 25x zoom. So the points to ponder are now back to 1. Are you okay with a bulky phone? 2. Would the limited battery life be sufficient for you considering the frequent accessibility to the charging port? 3. Do you like telescopic pictures? Or you don't even care and wouldn't use it? We have to admit that Apple will not give you the best 5x lens one shot in ip15. And it takes time to improve further and who knows the issue of 3x til 4.9x lenses solved in ip16 and together with 15PM with a software update?

Fatal flaw? The 120mm lens on the 15 Pro Max should have been a FOURTH lens. 15 Pro Max will have no optical lens between 24mm and 120mm so shooting at 90, 100, even 110mm will be a CROP of the 24mm lens, reducing resolution severely, creating a very soft looking result. Previously, cropping the 77mm lens gave you focal lengths in the range 78-119mm. Now you have to crop a 24mm lens. This is insane.

Bingo. That 3x lens handles digital zoom to about 5x surprisingly well, not as good as optical obviously but it's plenty usable and sometimes even almost a toss-up if you aren't looking too closely. But the reverse isn't true, and past 3x that main sensor crop on the Pro Max just completely falls apart. It just can't cover that awkward gap in the phone's zoom range that both models have nearly as well, which is far more serious than the niche benefit of taking slightly better gimmicky 10x+ digital zoom photos. This very much feels like a transitional product, and I'd bet that we see a move to 4 lenses in a couple years to patch this issue up.

@@LTDcodm I guess so. I feel like this is getting blown out of proportion. Since the 48mp automatically uses as much as it needs, 1-2x (24mm-48mm) is sharp. The 2x was the first "long" lens on the iphone. It's not terrible for portraits, but yeah, telephoto is better. But 77mm (3x) is a short telephoto, it looks a little nicer for portraits, but many people shoot portraits on longer lense, like 135mm. At 120mm, the 5x is still good for portraits, and if your subject is 8ft away at 77mm, you'd have to take a few big steps back to get the same framing. But the 120mm let's you do a lot more, like a good shot of animals or anything you don't want to get super close to.

@@LTDcodm I'm guessing they think that would be redundant haha. The Galaxy has a seperate 3x lens, but that's because the next up is a 10x lens, or 230mm. I'm a little bummed iphone doesn't have 10x, but their 5x is much faster. Y'know, some people like shooting everything on a 50mm, and they just walk back and forth to frame, haha. Again, I don't think this is as big a deal as it's being made out to be. My 15 Pro Max comes tomorrow, so maybe I'll feel differently when I get my hands on it.

Its battery can play videos for up to 23 hours and there is no difference between pro max and pro, in fact, pro is better for me because it is smaller.

Since Apple at last put a IEC 62680 USB-C style port in the iPhone I am going to purchase the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple putting USB-C type C connector with only USB 2 data rate is a MAJOR FAIL. Since it is a USB-C port Apple should have put at least put 5GB 3.0 data rate in the standard iPhone 15 product line. Would have liked ThunderBolt/USB4 40GB data rate in the Apple 15 Pro since USB4 standard was released in 2019. I am okay with USB 3.1 10GB data transfer rate.

Digital zoom has always been spelled, S U C K S However, the Pro Max looks pretty impressive. I think I’ll have to start buying pants with bigger pockets because I might be getting the Max. 3X zoom isn’t that important. Think of it this way, how often do you really need to go past 2X and if you do is 3X really going to make that big of a difference? No. At that point you would probably be better off jumping all the way to 5X. Also, the 3X crop on the Max was nearly as good as the Pro anyway.

Let me give you an example: A photo taken on an iPhone 15 Pro with a zoom between 3x and 5x - for example 4x - will be clearer and higher quality than a photo taken with the same zoom on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. The reason for this is that the iPhone 15 Pro will take this photo with its 3x optical zoom lens instead of the main camera. Since the zoom is not yet 5x, the photo in question will be taken with the main camera at 4x digital zoom on iPhone 15 Pro Max. As a result, while you will get a very clear photo with 15 Pro, you will get a much worse photo with 15 Pro Max. But if you take photos with +5x zoom, Pro Max will be better.
