iPhone 15 vs iPhone 15 Pro Max External USB-C SSD Real World Speed Test

In this iPhone 15 vs iPhone 15 Pro Max speed test copying writing and reading data to an external USB-C SSD drive for backing up and storing files. It's super clear that Apple's decision to implement USB 2 speeds of 480Mb/s 60MB/s to the USB-C interface port for its data bandwidth, is woefully inadequate on the iPhone 15.
Given that the iPhone 15 is a flagship smartphone, these USB speeds are completely unacceptable.
When comparing the iPhone 15 to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which has a 10Gb/s 1250MB/s USB-C data bandwidth. The difference in the speeds is shameful.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max is 20x faster than the iPhone 15 when writing to its internal storage, which I believe is NVMe SSD storage for both phones. And the iPhone 15 Pro Max is 23 times faster than the iPhone 15 in the read speed test.
What do you think of these results for the iPhone 15 vs iPhone 15 Pro Max?
Do agree with the limitations that Apple have applied to the iPhone 15?
My opinion is that Apple have gone way too far in this cost cutting exorcise.

You can test ssd speeds with the speedtest (they usually use it to test Lte & wifi speeds) program, for this, connect the ssds to the iphon and run the speedtest program with different cables, there we will be able to see the speed difference in each cable thanks to you.

Yes, Tone. There is a huge difference and in my opinion one that shouldn't be there on such an expensive flagship phone. The problem with AirDrop is that it is very unreliable when moving large and multiple files. Plus, you'd need another Apple device, probably a Mac, to be able to move/save the file to via AirProp. Which would be a real pain when travelling/vlogging light. Cheers, Dave.

Sold my 15 plus then bought 15 pro, tho it has smaller screen the transfer speed is beneficial for me since I do take photos and edit videos a lot also it offers more specs than the 15 plus at a more compact size and easy to bring when traveling or hiking.

I'm back!!! iPhone 15 Pro 256GB Natural Titanium... ACASIS TBU405 USB C 40Gbps enclosure with provided USB C/TB3 short cable... Lexar NM790 (Gen 4x4) 4TB NVMe... Blackmagic Camera app, 4K60 422 LOG, direct record onto NVMe = 5 - 1 min clips, then 3 - 30 second clips, 2 - 5 minute clips... Brought into FCP, didn't find any dropped frames. I will test more this weekend with this set up. I purchased the Minisopuru 10Gbps NVMe enclosure before getting the 15 Pro, thinking the ACASIS TBU405 needed more power? I've used both enclosures today with the Lexar NM790, WD SN570 and WD SN770 NVMe's, both 2TB NMVe, with no issues. I also have the ACASIS CM073 10Gbps Hub, but I connected power to the PD Port to make sure it works properly with an installed NVMe, and yes, it works with the iPhone 15 Pro for recording 4K Apple LOG, in both the native camera app and Blackmagic app. I will report back if I encounter any rapid battery drain using the ACASIS enclosures vs. the Minisopuru enclosure. I am happy with my purchases, so far. I hope this assists you with what you've bought and use case? I believe the 15 Pro is the sweet spot... I'm coming from the 13 Pro.

@@DavidHarry Update 10/22/2023: Do not use NVMe Enclosures below 50% charge due to the amount of power the need. The 15 Pro hiccuped several times trying to record onto WD SN570 2TB enclosed in the Minisopuru 10Gbps... Use Samsung T-Series SSDs. I used the SSK 1TB SSD with no issues for 15 minutes. I ordered a 3 meter 100W charge/data cable and USB C hub with PD, for studio use. will update later in the week.

Get some Gaffers tape and make the cords, hub and SSD enclosure somewhat pretty to carry on my Small Rig cage! Next purchase? 100W PD battery bank, then I'm done!

It’s likely that both phones have got very similar storage, so any internal movement of data will likely be very similar. It’s the USB connection that slows down the 15 not its actual storage. Cheer, Dave.

Alright, Kevin. Yes, a huge difference. I suspect that the storage is either the same or very similar. Whatever it is, the storage on the 15 is way faster than the USB bus speed, that’s strangling it to death 😆 There may be a lot of stuff that’s the same and Apple just limit the use on the 15. They also can easily change the specs on the ancillary specification for the main SoC. The iPad Mini 6 has the same basic A15 SoC as the iPhone 13, yet the iPhone 13 only has Lightning (480Mb/s USB2) but the iPad Mini 6 has got a 5Gb/s USB C port. This proves that Apple could just have easily given the iPhone 15 the same USB C specs as the 15 Pro Max, or something at least a lot faster than 480Mb/s, such as 5Gb/s. It’s just Apple being Apple. @@KevinMuldoon Alright, Kevin. Yes, that might be something to test. In all honesty, AirDrop may be the better option with the 15 as it’s probably faster than the USB speed. With the Pro Max, saving to an SSD is definitely way faster than AirDrop and AirDrop also has problems. If I try and AirDrop a lot files to my MacBook it always screws up. Saying that, if you are out and about and need to save files from any device to free up space, for example, if shooting video. Then the likes of AirDrop are useless if you don’t have something you AirDrop to. This is when you definitely need an external SSD and this is where the 15 is a big let down. With over four minutes for just one 10GB file, you can imagine how boring that’s going to get with a lot of files. Or put it another way. With the Pro Max being between 20 to 23 times faster. If there was a file dump that took the Pro Max 10 minutes to do, it would take the 15 about 3 and half hours. I see many KZbinrs saying the differences between the 15 and Pro Max aren’t huge and are OK, especially the USB speeds. I wonder how may people will agree with that when they get stuck, trying to save files with no other option other than an external SSD? Cheers, Dave.

@@DavidHarry I guess it depends on how your workflow and how you use your phone. If you don't transfer video files often or care about the higher refresh rate, the standard iPhone is a great option. No point paying for features you don't use. For me, there was enough to upgrade to the pro max and I love the idea of recording more with my phone and using it as a B roll camera. That's where the external SSDs come in and transfer rates really start to matter. I'm still considering getting a Mac at one point, which is where airdrop could be very useful. It's a shame it's screwing up. Is there a good app or method for just dragging and dropping files into a network drive?

@@KevinMuldoon Alright, Kevin. Yes, you can use network mapped drives on the Macs. My friend has a Mac Mini M1 in a Windows setup and he uses mapped network drives/locations to connect the Mac to the Windows machine via Thunderbolt, the Windows machine is one I built for him and it has an add-on Thunderbolt card. This is basically done via the IP address of the machines. So your new NAS should be addressable, along with any other network drive, if you used a Mac. I know you're familiar with Macs but I'm not sure if you've used the Apple Silicon machines. If not and if you'd to like to see what all the fuss is about give me a shout. I've got a 16GB/256GB M1 Mac Mini you can have a play with to see if you like the new Apple Silicon stuff. As long as you cover the courier there and back, you can borrow this for a week or so if you want. Cheers, Dave.

Yes, that sounds exactly right. The hardware in the 15 is already capable of the faster USB speeds, there are other Apple devices with that same hardware that does do the faster speeds. So, Apple would have to have gone out of their way to restrict the USB speed on the 15. Basically, artificially manufacturing a difference between the 15 and 15 Pro. While I do understand that Apple do things like this to upsell to the “Pro” version. It was totally unnecessary to restrict the USB speed as there are already major differences between the 15 and the 15 Pro that would make people choose the 15 Pro anyway. Cheers, Dave.

Dear David, I apologise in advance if this is a really stupid question, which it probably is.. so related to Music files / Music library - On my Mac at home all my music files are stored on the local hard drive, roughly 180GB file in total, is it possible to transfer all those files to an SSD, connect the SSD to my iPhone 15 Pro Max and then 'play' the music via the Music app on the iPhone ? So in other words using the SSD as a sort of iPod / server type thingy ? Currently my Music Library is also on iTunes Match if that helps I'm in my 60's now so I don't know too much about this sort of thing, do I just export the 'Music Library' to the SSD ? if so how ? Thanks in advance. FYI I am an expatriate scouser living down south.

Hi, Paul. Yes, if you copy any folder with any music tracks inside of it, to an external SSD, your iPhone will be able to play the files from the external SSD. I’m not sure what app it will use or if it’s Apple Music that plays the files but they will be playable, one way or another. However, if you’ve got the music in iTunes Match, your iPhone will have access to all those anyway, as long as it’s connected to the Internet via mobile or WiFi and it’s logged into the same Apple account. If you have an iTunes folder on your computer you can copy the music folder to the external SSD. I’m not sure where the folder is but if you do a Searchlight search it should tell you where the folder is. Cheers, Dave.

Hi David great video, do you think as someone who plans to buy the base model iPhone 15 and use an external hard drive as a backup for photos and occasional transfer of videos from GoPro (holidays) that I will be frustrated by the slower speeds or is manageable.

Hi. For me personally, I couldn’t possibly use those slow USB transfer speeds for backing up or copying data to an external device. For use with a GoPro, it is possible to use a simple USB C to SD card reader to connect your GoPro’s SD card to the iPhone. Once connected, you can preview the video files on the phone or even use the phone to backup your GoPro video files to. However, this will be very slow and the same slow speed as all the previous iPhones that used the Lightning connector. The Lightning connector was essentially a USB 2 interface, so only 480Mb/s maximum for the data rate but usually lower. You may well be able to put up with the slow speeds, however, I’ll guess that it will frustrate you. If you’re not desperate for an iPhone 15, maybe wait until the 16 is released. All of the 16s, including the base version, should have at least 10Gb/s transfer speeds, just like the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. If you’re not doing too much data and video stuff that require access vis the iPhone 15’s USB C port, then maybe it’s not going to be as big a headache as it is for me. Cheers, Dave.

Have you tried using a 20gbps enclosure? Or usb c 2x2? I want the fastest storage for iPhone, which will be the bottleneck, but want the best possible speeds from the drive to computer speeds, which can work at much higher speeds.

Anything above a 10Gb/s enclosure and a Gen 3 NVMe is going to require more power than the any of the iPhones can supply and won’t work. Check my other videos for examples of the power problems. If you are using a dock or hub with the iPhone then you can even use a Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 SSD.

I read somewhere that the speed is related to if the USB storage is self-powered or not. Would be nice if you repeated the experiment with a powered USB hub. That would probably achieve maximum speed. Alternatively, you can plug the SSD into a desktop computer, because all USB ports on a desktop computer are well powered.

Until they've been tested, no one knows the answer to that question. However, this drive is the fastest of all my drives with the iPhone.

​@@DavidHarry Samsung 980 max power consumption is 4.6W but the max captaincy is 1TB. Have you tried with any 2TB SSD? Samsung 990 pro max power consumption is 5.5W. Don't know if this will work.

bought my new 15 plus less than a month, been trying to edit right now our recent party this Christmas and just discovered that it's taking me half an hour just to transfer around 20gb file :/, should I just switch to the pro version?

If you need the faster transfer speeds over USB you may want to look at the Pro. If you are on a Mac computer you can use AirDrop, which will be faster than the USB on the 15 but not as fast as the USB on the 15 Pro/Max.

But acc to this video, A 10.65 GB Video File lets assume it as 11gb took only 4.40mins so for 20gb should take around 9 mins right? Am I missing something? I'm on the verge of making the purchase, too confused what to get i just need USB-C for my usage.
