Coming from a 14 Pro, the 16 Pro will be a huge upgrade for me in video features. What are your thoughts on ProRes RAW and why you would need it urgently in an iPhone? Personally I'm very happy about having log. I've tried RAW video with Blackmagic, and in 95% of my use cases it seems like it's not worth the trouble (I mostly make music videos). Perhaps I'm missing some of the advantages of RAW video?

I actually have many videos about raw and why it’s good in many cases, mostly in a pro workflow. But in short RAW eliminates any internal sharpening, denoising, coloring, etc… it gives you full control. These internal processes we have now might end up looking good at first glance but not really good once you start applying heavy grading, VFX to Footage. Also denoising Raw yields better results than denoising already denoised Footage.

Hi, Serif. Great videos in your channel, I am happy I found it. Could you point me to a video where you break down why you prefer iphone and pro res, and the 4k 120fps on the new 16 pro(max). Over the Sony Xperia phones where the 4k 120 fps is present since a few years. Also there is the USB 3.2 and etc. why is not the Xperia on the radar? Could you give us insights on your reason to go with Apple devices. Is Sony Xperia any good for videography? How are the formats or codecs they offer. Would you switch for any reason to Sony?

I am not convinced by the 48MP upgrade from 12MP, due to the effective 4x splitting of each colour pixel and not 4x resolution increase. Please can you test the detail increase from 12MP to 48MP, in different lighting conditions? Thanks

I knew it wasn’t 48MP the second they said it retained the same sensor size. You wouldn’t want to cram 4x the resolution on the same size sensor, it would look worse. What they’re doing is basically upscaling, and then counting the sub-pixels, good for reducing file size, but not great if you want to retain detail. A native 48MP image is going to look great at large print sizes compared to 12MP images. You can only hide so much with tech wizardry but you can’t overcome the physical limitations created by making everything so small.

And I’m not hating on Apple, just pointing out facts. I know this because I’ve been making prints from my iPhone images going back to the XS. You can make really good prints with the images captured on these phones, but the second you get a great composition & try to print it large, it falls apart. When the main camera switched to “48MP” my images didn’t get 4x sharper, or with 4x the detail, I certainly couldn’t print 4x larger prints 😂 I even print mine from the standard image files, unless it’s something g I plan to edit to get a particular look, I rarely shoot in RAW. Even when I do, it’s not like those images can print larger because they have more data.

There’s only one way to find out honestly, but what I know so far is this is a SONY IMX903 sensor with actual 48MP resolution. It has quad pixel autofocus capabilities as well. All what I’m reading from everyone here is just assumptions, not facts, because no one really knows what’s going on under the Apple’s hood. My advise is: forget about the resolutions or technical jargon Apple talked about, I don’t care honestly. I only care about the result and what it compares to in other proper cameras. I know that the 24mm lens is the best performing one and the 120mm is pretty bad in comparison. I’m probably the biggest nerd of you all, but we need to focus on final visual results, not specs. Once again, there’s only one way to find out

@@koobs4549 99.9% of people post pictures on instagram etc. You won't notice any difference between 12MP and 48MP. And don't even start about printing : NO ONE is printing photos these days.

The multi “studio quality” mics already exist on the iPad Pro but barely anyone ever talks about them or have audio pros test them. I found one Reddit post - guy says the Omni and cardiod on the back camera are the best. I listened to each mic and found the stereo on the back sounded the best. Seems like at the least, someone could make an app that uses all the mics to do good noise reduction etc for field recording, cause you’d think that’s what the voice memos app would do but it doesn’t.

I believe the mics they were referring to in this keynote are actually upgrades from what we have in the iPhone 15. Not sure if they’re the same ones you find on the iPads they were talking about. In all cases the issue I was referring to is about the signal/noise ratio, so you can surely do some field recording or Foley, but it might not be the best for conversations and dialogues if they are further away from the camera

Not to be rude got the iPhone 15 pro a few months back I’ll upgrade when log is added to cinematic mode. Don’t really care about frame rate I use the 15 pro strictly for gimbal use cause the auto focus is brilliant in the Blackmagic app and use a Black magic cinema camera for everything else. It really surprises me how well Apple log footage goes with more expensive cameras. It’s like a wet dream I’m never waking up from 😂

as your notice that 'new encoder' i think AV1 codec is abslutely the A18 should support,and i think apple should enable the ability of recording video by AV1 codec instead of HEVC, but no one said about that.

I'd love for you to be critical about the 5x. I'm a wildlife photographer and I usually use the Z8 with a 105, 300 and 500mm prime. But I'm considering the phone for filming KZbin, and even doing a few episodes on wildlife filming with the iphone! I suspect the 5x @ 12MP will be as bad as previous generations (we know 15 pro max 5x telephoto was absolutely dreadful)

Yes the 5X Camera is the worst performing camera of them all, you should be okay if you’re shooting in the morning not in lowlight, but I’ll test it anyways. I believe it’s the same exact one from the 15.

I’m getting a bit tired of apples drip feed upgrades and creating hype around things that just aren’t that exciting. 4k120 is great but they really need to try a bit harder with codecs. Slowmo in hd always looks trash so I really hope 240 hd looks better. And ffs give us log in h.265. I shoot slog on Sony in 10bit 4:2:2 h.265 and it’s gorgeous. I’m not going to take a hard drive with me everywhere I go! I was really hoping to see a 10x zoom too. Maybe in a few years time. I’m going to keep my 13 pro max

Thank you for separating the "fluff" from the substance for us. The 4K 120 looks like a cool new feature. I don't shoot a lot of slo mo, but, for some who do this is a welcome addition I'm sure. It was smart to point out how the new audio enhancement features are probably best suited for recording people close to the camera. A shotgun mic would be better, of course. I have the 15 Pro. Which was a huge step from my previous iPhone, the 12 Pro Max. The biggest difference was the dramatically improved video image quality in the 15 Pro. I'll wait to see your comparisons with the image quality of the 16 Pro before I decide on whether or not to upgrade. Great job. Cheers.

What do you think about Tony and Chelsea Northrups recent video on the iPhone where they mentioned that (to put it plainly) the 48 megapixels is mostly a gimmick that has divided the pixels 4x to quadruple the 12MP on paper but in actuality just increases file size and is mostly a marketing move.

I checked the sensor model of the iPhone 15 and it’s actually 48mp. The lenses’ are post sharpening and denoising are probably what’s ruining a lot of things. And yes I agree with many of what he says but Keep in mind they were checking photo mode, I’m more focused on video which has a whole different pipeline. In all cases I’ll be checking all this thoroughly once I get the phone

While I'm happy more people will have these features in a mainstream phone, I have to chuckle a little; I'm a Sony Xperia user, and have had access to these same features (4k120, log, dedicated shutter button, microphones on front and back, ultrawide lens, etc.) for many years already. Dedicated shutter button (with half-press to focus) on my very first Xperia in 2013 is what introduced me to the phone series in the first place.

(I suggested making their phones double as monitors to their professional cameras - a feature they subsequently added). Their phones were technically fantastic, but the UI suffered in comparison to Apple and outside Japan failed to sell in decent numbers. Apple’s skill is making high-end features accessible to the masses and taking its time doing so if required to only deploy them when it can get it right.

I mean, what you’re saying is more of an observation on the results, but that doesn’t equate to “that sensor is a 12 mp sensor” You realise that the same sensor can exist in 2 different cameras and they would both have completely different results. All due to how the brand tweaks it to its own liking. Yes, I actually was thinking to have a video to answer all his points, but it’s just too long of a list and I don’t have that much time. He has a point in a couple of issues here and there and I agree with him in almost half of what he said. But there are other fundamental issues that he kind of misrepresented. Keep in mind also everything he said was from a photography point of view, where the pipeline is different than in video. If you’re more into filmmaking, then maybe just stay tuned to my technical tests. I’m gonna conduct between the 15 and the 16. I’ll also be comparing it to other video-centric cameras to put this topic to rest.
