You don't get the cinematic motion blur of 24 fps unless you snap on a neutral density filter so the exposure time can knock down to the double-digits, even in daylight. (And you need to knock the ISO down as well. I don't know how you do that in native iOS mode.) I notice The Modern Rogue is a channel that shoots in 24 fps. But the motion is conspicuously choppy, because they use short exposure times to capture stunt action.
@thefilmalliance3 ай бұрын
That's a great point about the motion blur and neutral density filter. It's definitely a technique that can enhance the cinematic look. I'll be sure to include that in future videos. As for the ISO, you're right, it's not as adjustable in native iOS mode. However, there are third-party apps that offer more manual control, allowing you to adjust ISO and exposure time like the BMCA and the Final Cut Camera app. You're also right about The Modern Rogue and their short exposure times. While they do achieve a certain level of sharpness and detail, it can sacrifice some of the cinematic feel. It's a trade-off that depends on the specific look you're aiming for.

Just got the 16 pro and on my way to learn videography and editing, found this video super useful! One thing I noticed right from the start which you did not mention in the end (might be just me having some wrong settings in use or smth), is at least when editing with semi beefy PC, H.265 4K absolutely killed pc performance, tried all the possible fixes I found online but the performance did not get any better. Meanwhile apple prores worked really well, not janky at all in Resolve. H.265 shot processor or GPU straight to 100% use depending which was configured to do the work, with prores they stayed somewhere in the 20% range, just something to consider. Might be different story on MacOS devices or with Final Cut Pro. Could you give me your take on this? Again, really useful video thank you!
@thefilmalliance3 ай бұрын
I appreciate you stepping in here
@thefilmalliance3 ай бұрын
That's a great observation about H.265 performance. It's a common issue, especially on older or less powerful machines. While it offers excellent compression, it can be more demanding to process. Apple ProRes, on the other hand, is designed with post-production in mind. It's often more CPU-friendly and offers better performance, especially for demanding tasks like grading and effects. It's worth noting that performance can vary depending on your specific hardware and software setup. If you're working with a beefy PC and a modern video editor, you might be able to handle H.265 more efficiently. However, for optimal performance, especially when working with large projects, Apple ProRes might be the better choice, especially while on a mac.

@@thefilmalliance Makes sense. I’ve been trying to get better at filming on my 15 pro, and this video gave me a couple tips I’ll be using. I use resolve on my iPad Pro, and it has been crazy finding accurate info for the iPad specific version of resolve, but after you learn it, it’s hard to use any other video editing programs, since none are as fully featured for the iPad. Final Cut on the iPad is more like Final Cut light, and lumafusion is pretty close, but not as fully featured imo, although it’s easier to use. Tough to justify spending a thousand or (much) more on a dslr when the iPhone can get 80-90% of the way there, especially for smaller channels like my own. Thanks for the video, and great info 👍
@thefilmalliance3 ай бұрын
That's great to hear that you've found the video helpful, I know how challenging it can be to find accurate information for iPad-specific versions of software. Resolve on the iPad is a powerful tool, and it's impressive how much it can do on a mobile device. While mirrorless cameras offer more flexibility and control, it's clear that iPhones have come a long way. For many creators, especially those starting out or with smaller channels, the iPhone is a fantastic option. It's a great way to experiment, learn, and produce high-quality content without breaking the bank. I would however download the Black Magic Camera App to get more control over exposure
@ComfyChroma3 ай бұрын
@@thefilmalliance I have been using the black magic camera app, and the Final Cut camera. I usually record at 1080, ProRes, sdr, and have gotten pretty decent results editing my videos like that in resolve. I think the Final Cut camera app is a bit more easy to use, so if I’m recording a quick video, I will use that, but black magic camera gets the best results, and has the most flexibility by far. The only video I’ve made so far that looks identical in resolve, exported and uploaded to KZbin is the Apple worm video, shot in 4K, where I filmed it in black magics camera. All the other videos I can still get good results, but there is always a slight color shift when uploading to KZbin. I love the look of the Apple worm video, but I still need to get comfortable narrating a video, because I sound like a shy zombie in that video. I’ve spent over a year editing a sketchbook tour video that’s has been a real challenge because I’m using photos, videos, from years ago, shot on my old iPhone SE, and I’m trying to add a bunch of transitions, and just have more fun with the overall edit. The worst part so far has been a bug in resolve where any HEIC photos just weren’t working, and turned neon green. I think this was also an issue on Mac’s, not just the iPad version, and I spent forever going back through the video and converting the heic photos to jpeg, and having to redo all the transitions and coloring, and then week after I did all that, resolve has an update that fixed the heic photos bug 🤦♂️😂. The last thing I need to do is the narration, and it’s been taking me forever to get right and be comfortable, but hopefully soonish I’ll finally finish it. Thanks again for the video, and the best conversation I’ve had with a creator on KZbin, much appreciated. I hope your channel keeps doing well, I subbed.

JPEG VS HEIC is not just a question of a “smart way to store your stuff”, a question of compressibility, There i is an important difference in quality.JPEGS are 8 bit but HEIC is 16 bit. Now most good apps can read HEIC and treat it.

Whats up Jabba, Imagine your camera captures colors like a painter collecting paints on their palette. A camera LUT is like a special set of instructions that tells the camera how to mix those paints differently, creating a whole new range of colors and tones. It's like having a filter that changes the overall look and feel of your video, similar to how Instagram filters work for photos. Instead of manually adjusting each color, a LUT instantly transforms the footage, saving time and offering creative possibilities. It can give your video a vintage film look, a warm summery vibe, or a dark and moody atmosphere. Essentially, it's a quick and easy way to give your videos a professional and stylistic touch. With the iPhone 16 Pro you can import the lut with the Black Magic Camera app to preview what it looks like in real time

Thanks for providing the free evaluation files! I own the Pocket 3 and I have already ordered the iPhone 16 Pro so these files you are providing are I would dare say essential for me to do my initial tests. I edit in HDR so I imported the BT.2020 Log files into Premiere and created a relevant sequence. I tried using the Apple LUT but I still see nits are closer to 100, not 1000. I tried pulling the whites (even over 100, to 150 max) before they burned (always using an HDR monitor) but they still did not go close to 1.000. Am I doing something wrong? Are the files in Dolby Vision or there is another way to do so? When editing my HDR Pocket 3 files, all is fine and the video level is proper. * update: It seems I managed to properly color correct with Premiere Pro Beta. To my eyes, only the green car video has visible video noise inside the driver's cabin. I think that the bigger sensor of the Osmo Pocket 3 would do a better job resulting in less noise in that scenario. Do you think that this would be the case? I suppose the iPhone would give better overall quality, but the Pocket 3 less noise and no bounce as the iPhone has some jitter in the file with the bump at the same green car clip.
@thefilmalliance4 ай бұрын
That's great you figured it out and thanks for the update and kind words. As far as the pocket 3 goes I am versing it against the iPhone 16 Pro right now. Without giving any spoilers, you are spot on with your analysis!

@@thefilmalliance We'll wait for the next video then! Maybe you could plan a future video regarding the Blackmagic app and iPhone 16 in Log and/or HDR. We would like to see some tests of ProRes HQ vs ProRes, regarding dynamic range. I'm thinking that "plain" ProRes will save about 1/3 of the space, and it's still better than H.265. Also to see if the Blackmagic app results in the same stabilisation as the Apple camera. As a small channel, I see that about 20% of my viewers watch content (HDR or not) on TVs, so I invest in recording in HLG.

need help - I just got iphone 16 pro, but have Dell xps 13 to use for post production edits. In the formats do I need to adjust them differently to be able to access the files (or SSD) on my laptop for editing in CapCut ?

When I use the Blackmagic camera app and outside, the image is so overexposed even when having 120fps, 180 shutter angle, and lowest ISO 54..how are you achieving good exposure without using and ND filter when shooting outdoors??
@thefilmalliance4 ай бұрын
Hey Daniel, thanks for checking out the video. You're right, shooting in bright daylight with the iPhone 16 Pro can be tricky. I've found that even in manual, it's tough to avoid overexposure sometimes. I often end up either cranking the shutter speed really high or relying on auto exposure with negative compensation (-0.7 is a good starting point!). But as I mentioned in the video, the golden hour really is the sweet spot for capturing that filmic look with the iPhone. The softer light during those times makes a huge difference in managing exposure and avoiding that jittery high-shutter-speed look. If you're stuck shooting in harsh daylight, you might want to consider using an ND filter to help control the light. It's definitely a worthwhile investment for any serious iPhone filmmaker but for me I try just shooting when the light isn't so harsh. Does that make sense?
