The iPhone 16 Pro was just released, and it features 4K at 120fps recording in ProRes and Apple Log which is a huge step for iPhone filmmaking. So in this video I am comparing the iPhone 16 Pro Max to my RED Dragon Cinema Camera. There aren't that many cameras that can shoot 4k 120fps, the Sony FX3 and FX6, and newly released Canon C80. Many cinema camera offerings like the Black Magic Cinema Camera and Black Magic PYXIS and the RED Komodo are actually outperformed by the iPhone 16 Pro in this regard.

The 16 Pro has the same size main sensor as the 15 and 14. They only improved the read out speeds.

I literally talk about that in the video for like a full minute... That's the case with a lot of Cinema Cameras, but the iphone footage definitely resembles footage you get from modern mirrorless cameras, as I mentioned in the video.

Oversampling does make a huge difference in apparent sharpness and decreasing noise- that is why the Sony FX30 image outshines the FX3 (at base ISO) - oversampling! I actually am shooting more and more directly with my iPhone (15Pro) - Log - ProRes (but I use ProResLT and the Blackmagic app) directly to an external small SSD- it has amazed me! Shallow DOF and shooting in very low-light are still a challenge for the iPhone - simply the physics of a very small sensor.

One aspect that I wish to point out - whenever iPhone video footage is mentioned - is the physical limitations of the lens or lenses the iPhone (or any comparable smartphone) employs. Now I am not a physicist or engineer but - for decades at this stage - I’ve encountered very detailed explanations of why such and such lens is designed the way it is (and the starting point is that actual size of the various “pieces of optical glass” - the “elements” - the lens comprises - the relatively small “taking lens” on an iPhone must - I suspect - suffer in comparison). Has “image processing software” advanced to the stage that decades of “lens design know how” no longer is the determinant of the quality of the image captured ? The price of the Red camera is mentioned in this video - the price of even a medium quality motion picture lens may, itself, run into one to two thousand dollars (and I speak of a fixed focal length lens - not a zoom). So - basically - I am asking - has all this clever software made traditional notions of what constitutes a very high quality “taking lens” for motion picture capture redundant ???????

No, it's just differences in how the sensors are built. And oversampling (which I think the iPhone does, but couldn't find a source on this) makes the image look much more detailed.

Yeah I noticed that later on, definitely part of the SSD issues I was facing. I'm pretty sure (after I did some additional testing) it's because once the SSDs cache fills up it gets super slow.

These results are quite pleasing, from both cameras. There is something concerning though; the error you got, did you ever figure out what it was? Because now I'm overthinking being in the middle of shooting my short film and suddenly the iPhone starts complaining about the SSD being too slow, that's not sexy Apple 🤣 For someone who is starting, I see no issues picking an iPhone and make a career from it. Build your skills, then focus on your tools.

I think it’s the SSD, once the cache fills it gets super slow. But I was filming 4K 120FPS in ProRes 422HQ so literally the highest amount of data the iPhone can produce. The file sizes are also insane. I think at 24fps and maybe a lower quality codec there shouldn’t be any problems but I’ll test that soon.

The iPhone needs a high quality high speed USB 3 10Gbps cable, even a thunderbolt cable is good, that could be the issue here for you

My Sony Xperia 1V does 4K 120fps HDR even my Xperia 1iii in the drawer of my desk does 4K 120fps HDR And yes it goes way back to the Xperia 1ii 😅😅 and yes you can even playback 4K natively on the build in 4K display 😂
