For all the criticism the iPhone gets for depth of field because of the sensor size it does make up for some of that with its really fast aperture. The iPhone is roughly equal to the R5 with 24mm at f5.6 which is still decent depth of field. It’s also kind of my favorite sweet spot for lens quality on fullframe lenses. The main issue with the iPhone is that 24mm is the only decent lens/camera and we are stuck with it. The longer lens has more reach but the sensor is even smaller. Having an iPhone with their full quality sensor at 50mm or even 35mm would be huge. Someday maybe. I’m not a huge fan of 24mm and find it too wide most of the time. It also hurts the depth of field which could actually be somewhat decent if it was 50mm instead. Cropping isn’t an option either because the sensor size is 1/4 the size and even smaller. One of those 3rd party lenses kind of solves it but sticking a lens in front of a lens like that feels hacky to me.
@JaredHoyman4 күн бұрын
The best place to use the 24mm is in doors and that is where the iphone shines. Adapters could help, but again then you are carrying those around too. Might as well bring your camera.

The way I do it is for social media moments or fast moments. I shoot it with my R5ii in raw. I send it to my phone with camera connect with full resolution . I then load photoshop express and hit the magic button. It automatically adjusts the image. I can crop it,scale it whatever. Better quality than any phone. And by the way, iphones never win smartphone picture contests. It's usually pixel or one plus that wins (and sometimes Samsung). Then upload the canon Pic. I take my R5ii everywhere

Just got back into "serious shooting" recently with the R5ii (actually last Black Friday with the R6ii on discount, but traded that in this BF for the R5ii) and have been a long time iPhone user (usually get the best version every 3 years). While I get your point, and I do plenty of pics/videos with my 15 Pro Max because it's with me all the time, let's be honest and admit that the vast majority of iPhone users won't use BlackMagic app, won't shoot video in ProRes or AppleLog, they're going to use the settings out of the box. A more interesting comparison would be the R5ii kit vs. iPhone video set at what most "normal people" will have it at. But like you, I'm very intentional about when I take my R5ii+lenses. And when I don't have it with me, the iPhone always comes out.

The best cam is of course the one you have with you. But THE difference with taking a portrait photo is not (only) the visible quality (on KZbin). It’s hard to formulate but a big lens (85mm f1.2) also creates a context for a careful approach, dedication and as such the interaction with and position and attitude of the one portrayed. While a phone is casual, fast and easy. That for sure will be visible. I don’t like the word ‘pro photography’, but maybe it’s about that. Of course there is a difference in resolution. Resolution of the photo’s from the phone is enough for KZbin and screens, but if you want to crop heavily problems arise. Comparing on KZbin can’t show the whole story, it tells the KZbin story.

I agree. No competition when it comes to the images you can achieve with a camera like the r5ii and a fast lens. I may not made it clear in the video but my point was that the best camera is the one that’s on you and to capture memories that you will cherish the iPhone does an excellent job. Your video convinces me even more that not upgrading my Canon SL1 was the right decision. I have been sitting on the fence considering upgrading. I looked at the R100 and it doesn't match my SL1, I looked at the R10 and it is still short on some features on my SL1, and I finally looked at the R7 and it is better than my SL1 in terms of headroom and controls and features as well as being mirrorless. But I still can't justify spending nearly 5 times the cost of the iPhone 16 Pro that I have for casual photography and video making. So I am sitting and waiting for a reason to move to the R7 II when it comes out. I am not sure it will be aimed at my demographic. Rumor has it that They are making it more of an entry level Pro camera which means they are raising the price moderately ( Body will be $2,000 instead of sub-1000) and improving the features marginally. Replacing my six lenses with RF equivalent will cost me over $10K. That is a hard no! The only capability I have a real issue with is photographing the moon since I have to drop the aperture al the way down, and set up for a stacked image. It would be nice if I had an astrophotography mode on the phone for occasional use.

I love this comparison, I had found after watching a few vids with the iPhone 16 Pro that it performs better at 1250 ISO for comparable Dynamic Range to Canon Clog 2, I found that shooting at 100 or 200 ISO on the iPhone had noticeably worse Dynamic Range. I think Final Cut Camera is my favourite Camera app, finally Apple gave us a much more pro Native app to shoot with. Apple log gets 13 stops of useable Dynamic Range at 1250, that's Cinema Cam DR, I just shoot in H.265 for most things, I have tried the Pro Res and there are definite advantages.

I do recommend buying ssd drives for the cache storage option and if you are hard wired in a network buy the 10gbit Ethernet adapter. It’s not that much money to add those. Otherwise I didn’t go fancy with the mechanical drives for the main storage. I do all my editing from files that are stored on the symbology nas and it operates as if it’s directly connected to my Mac instead of a completely different floor where it actually is.

So far I find my Iphone 16 is amazing IF is light is good, no one is moving, and if it's fairly close to the subject or a landscape. Using a phone in the pre-mentioned tougher scenarios (which we do a lot of) I find the images almost unusable off the iPhone 16... Otherwise my R6ii with longer zooms and primes save the day and offer images we just couldn't get otherwise. Also, what is the network app you use to back up iPhone files? Thanks!!

The bottom line with any photo or video is that you are more likely to use the camera that is immediately available to obtain the shot, rather that the one that you have to take out, push buttons, and go through a sequence to take the first image. No mystery to it. I love my Canon R5M2 and R6M2, but when it comes to taking short videos or a quick snapshot, yeah, the iPhone wins. The convenience of using a smartphone as your camera is incomparable. But a smartphone video falls apart the moment you put it in a challenging condition. - Smartphones cannot create depth, due to the small sensor. - They cannot control their aperture, and hence cannot adhere to the 180 degree rule to produce a smooth, pleasant video. Smartphone video starts to look terrible in bright daylight when they turn up the shutter speed to compensate for the bright sunlight. The natural depth (bokeh) and the video smoothness make all the difference. And even if an individual frame captured on a smartphone may be comparable in quality to a professional mirrorless camera, when you add the two points I mentioned and put it in motion there is a world of difference. The closest I have ever seen a smartphone video look smooth, crispy, and pleasant is on the Nokia 808 PureView. It's shaky because it lacks stabilisation, and is only 1080p, but I don't know what magic they did, the video looks great. Photos look phenomenal.

That being said, some of my most treasured photos were taken with aps-c or full frame cameras and are stunning. There are plenty of pictures taken with a phone however that I also treasure. Really cool review, man! I'm nothing approaching a pro photographer; just an avid hobbyist. I agree 100%, the phone is amazingly convenient. When I go out to shoot, I have to pack up a couple of cameras and lenses, and schlep them around with me. Quite often, I meet people who make one of two comments: Either, "Wow, look at those cameras! Are you a professional photographer?", or "Hey, old man, why are you lugging all of those big gadgets around? There's this amazing new invention called a cell phone. You should get one!" My response to the first comment is usually, "Not at all, I'm just a hobbyist." My response to the second is usually, "I know, but I'm old-school. I prefer looking through a viewfinder than looking at a screen." I guess that is what it really boils down to, personal preference. The big camera bodies (and long lenses like the 200-800) are definitely more of an hassle to carry around than a phone, but that's fine. I like my cameras and lenses, and that's what it boils down to.
