Since that iPhone 4 prototype was "left behind" in that bar, I became somewhat paranoid with these convenient leaks, like I know some are doing it for free marketing and word of mouth spread, but hey , that's just me, it might really just be a coincidence after all.

The iPhone 4 event was geninue, we know this because of Apples response which included sending the cops after the Gizmodo guy. It's pretty well documented at this point that Google pixel leaks are entirely faked though, doesn't help that a few years ago they openly said they were going to drip feed info to prevent leaks and now they want to pretend their leaks are geninue.
@Locutus
@Locutus Жыл бұрын
Companies like Apple, Google, et al, do deliberately "leak" information, to see what the market reaction is, from time to time. The iPhone's headphone jack removal was more than likely "leaked" by Apple, to see the reaction and soften up people to the idea of no headphone jack.

I think very few are on purpose. The iPhone 4 for example was 100% an accident. By all accounts Steve Jobs was f-cking furious. And knowing him he would’ve much rather had it still be a surprise come the unveil than to increase hype.

It’s crazy to think that the iPhone 4/4s was my introduction to iPhones and smartphones in general and how crazy it was thinking you can do so many stuff with just a small glass rectangle. Sadly, that wasn’t my first iPhone I ever owned since that was the iPhone 5c. Also, never realized that the iPhone 4 was released 12 years ago until you mentioned it. I thought it was like 8-9 years.

I started my smart phone career with a Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox T830 in 2006, a full year before the first iPhone was released here in Europe, which also started with outlandish conditions regarding carriers and contracts. Anyway, the Windows CE based devices could do everything that the iPhone did, but were just so damn complicated that they never received mainstream attention. Now we all carry little glass rectangles, that all look the same, and can about all do the same stuff.

9:10 these holes were cut for easy acces for RF-switch connectors (you can see it thorugh) basically they seemed to be providing RF signal directly to the motherboard in conducted mode via coax cable, rather than via built in OTA (over the air) antennas, as signal going through coax is less prone to interferences caused by surroundings. Still you can find such ports in commercial units of non-iphone manufacturers.

The iPhone 4 and 4S have a special place in my heart, since in my opinion they still feel like the most comfortable and beautiful iPhones ever made (if we're purely talking about the dimensions/form factor of course). There was loads of lint inside the jack and in the process of removing the lint with a needle, I poked the needle a little too far and a 3 inch flame burst out of the top through the headphone jack, launching the needle from it and severely burning it in the process. I almost feel stupid for never having thought of the iPhone 3GS-like case as being the main culprit of Antennagate, but in hindsight, it makes complete sense. Also, Apple using Myriad Pro to set the “Prototype” label would likely only work to disguise it in China, where familiarity with Western typography isn’t as deep or pervasive. Anyone from the Latin sphere with a bit of design knowledge would instantly be able to guess it was an Apple prototype from a mile away.
@Locutus
@Locutus Жыл бұрын
I do agree that the typography should have been a non Apple font, but, no one seeing that label on the back is automatically going to think "This is an Apple product". Sure, like I said, it doesn't help Apple.

no and yes. luke miani made a video on the first iphone prototype and UI, and there’s always a unit that has this operating system to test out if the camera and other components are working properly. it’s the same testing api, so it does have the same “newton messagepad 3000” message, too. that’s not an ios beta or something, but we technically can consider it is for the original iphone

Thank you for sharing this. I visited your channel last night for the first time. I am not sure what led me to it, but have watched a few of your videos; good stuff. I don't see a lot these products advertised, but I don't spend much time on a computer. My job doesn't require much computer use other than to enter my time sheets, and I am seldom on one at home. But, I know there is a lot of scam products out there. Walmart has built an empire selling cheap worthless junk. Your video on the iPhone 4 was interesting. I was one of the original critics that believed the iPhone would be a passing fad; a gimmick. At the time, I really didn't believe that people were so attached to the power of a computer that they would want one in their pocket. Boy, was I wrong. The invention of the smart phone has certainly changed the world. It took me a few years to get on board with a smartphone. To be honest, I was afraid of one. I didn't think I would be able to figure one out, but it was easier than I thought. I have heard, and it may be a rumor, that the processing power of an iPhone is equal to the computers used in the original Space Shuttle. That is impressive if it is true. It's no wonder Steve Jobs's estate is worth billions.

I actually got to see a white iPhone 4 before it was released to the public. It was from a distance as it was being held by Stephen Fry during one of his gigs in Melbourne Australia. The iPhone 4s was the first brand new iPhone I bought (I managed to get a hold of an original release iPhone and had to fix the broken screen - that was fun). I loved the new design over the rounded look of the 3 and 3Gs. I still have the 4s in a box, but obviously don't use it any more. I bought the 6+ model and was disappointed with the new rounded shape of the phone, and the 8+ I bought after that, and the 11+ Pro Max as well. So I'm really hoping that the 14+ model is holding to the form factor of the 12 and 13 models. I want to get a hold of a new battery for the 4s at some stage, it's still in pretty good condition considering I used it for 3 years, and both of my kids have as well! Bag Apple as much as you like, they make good hardware.

just the option of 'brick device' in the test os proves that apple wrote software to trigger that. Now, to be completely brickable would mean that the hardware chips themselves have the ability to irretrevably disable thier operation. This is sounding a lot like military grade failsafe construction. ...also useful if you want to ensure a limited life span of the device.

You missed one thing, first off the Antenna issue was not blown out of proportion, it was a real issue with every device they put out that year. Yes, customers could avoid the issue by holding it differently, but it was a design issue. Apple failed to do proper validation on the design. For Apple to not expect that customers hands would eventually short the antennas was very bad on Apple's part. Customers were also very keen on customizing with cases which helped solve the issue for many. The one thing you missed though is that Apple started putting a very thin plastic layer on the antennas. Idk what specific type of plastic it was coated with, but every now and then when I come across an iPhone 4 I see the layer peeling in certian areas. This helped reduce the amount of surface areas customers hands could possibly short the antennas.

Old story I always like to tell of the iPhone 4, back in 2012 me and my brother were out camping somewhere where we had a camper and lake access. We had gone out to the lake, and my brother forgot he had his iPhone 4 in his pocket, jumping into the lake. Thing fell out his pocket, onto the bottom of the lake. We had found it an hour later, underwater. Took it back to camp, no rice, no nadda, plugged it in and it turned right on. One of the most well designed indestructible smartphones ever made. Another one, my mom that following winter lost her iphone 4 in an iced over CVS parking lot. It was ran over and later found by the plow truck, putted across the lot. It was returned to my mom when he got out of his truck, picked it up, and it just worked. He called my dad from the contacts and the phone, altho shattered, still worked after all that. These were just such, such solid phones. Theyd never make something like it again.

Please do other iconic phones too. Blackberry, HTC G1/Hero, Nokia 1100, old Razrs, etc, anything you can get your hands on that shaped the industry down the line that have prototypes.

At least you won't likely need a wierd case to be a tester of the base model iPhone 14. At least judging by rumors.

Great vidya as always, Ken. Personally, I miss the GB logo. What do you think? Edit: ah, the white iPhone. I waited so long for that to come out, and for it to come to Verizon - carrier at the time. They turned into real pieces of dog sh**!
