you dont need this tool you can do it with hot air. It wont work either i have tried it. The chip has to be orogrammed to work, As these are radomly programmed at factory there is no way you can get to know the code to re-program . The chip cant be read after programming the fusses get blow in the chip to make sure it cant be read

The U10 is not the matched component. You can change these out with out any issue.

I thought the chip that was paired with the CPU was embedded directly within the touch ID button itself and not external to the button??? And if this method works, how do you test it? How can you test it without the owners finger ID on it??

Those are a bit harder to work with since the cable is hard to place down flat so it’s likely you can use some heat resistant glue to hold the cable down and take off the tiny chip. It does require good soldering skills and some proper tools along with a microscope or really good magnifying lens. I’m practicing on doing it myself for every model so I can offer it as a service and not have to send it off.

No, U10 is not the part that is matched to the board. ANY U10 can be swapped around.

The idea is to remove the original chip from a damaged button. In most cases the cable gets torn but the chip is still usable. That being the case you would be able to restore not only the click but also the touch id functionality. Keep in mind that on iphone 7 or 8 if you replace the home button you lose not only touch id but any home button function, even returning to home screen or the "click" function.

@uTunes Playlists < Yes it does restore both Home and Touch functions. As Marcio said above, starting with iPhone 7 and higher, you can't just fix the Home only, it's all or nothing. Don't waste your time using a home button replacement, it will not work, you must move the U10 chip. On iPhones 5S/5SE/6/6+/6S/6S+ you can use a replacement home button for Home function only (touch won't work unless you move the chip). @mrsemifixit < Hot air is not as convenient or precise as the custom made heating block. On a tiny chip like the U10 you can easily blow it away with the hot air flow. ;)
