These keys are a step backwards. As an example banks have been working for decades to streamline and simplify transactions to where eventually we no longer need even a physical card (e.g. credit or debit), but for the last year now if you’re a landlord with tenants in say an apartment building or a mobile home or RV park the banks charge you a hefty fee for each rent payment transaction for each tenant if you allow the tenants to use either a credit or debit card. So what has this resulted in? As a tenant you must now pay your rent bill with a written cheque - do you get my point?

Once setup, you only need the security key if you are planning on setting up a new Apple device or going online to use iCloud. You do not need to carry this key with you or even use it for months or years. Your phone or iPad will not ask you to reauthenticate itself with this key. Also, you are NOT setting up a security key on that device. You are setting up a security key on your Apple account using that device. Once you setup a security key, all your other Apple devices know about it. The only reason to ever carry a security key is if you are also using the same key on a specific website that you have configured to use it. Some people will configure their Mac or PC to login using the same security key in which you may have to actually carry it with you. But this is a completely different issue that setting up an Apple account.

@fredoswego Жыл бұрын
Since you need 2+ keys (aka a backup) I can see it making sense to go with a cheap one as the one that sits at home in your fire-safe or safety deposit box. When you lose/break the more expensive version you use the cheap backup so you can add the replacement. I think the design of the NFC keys needs to be rethought though to make them more suited to being something you'll have on you 24/7. I can't picture any of those plugs surviving too long on a populated key-ring in your pocket. Something is going to break/bend. Perhaps an actual NFC ring you wear. @@PayetteForward does this mean that if someone steals your phone they cannot change your passwords to you Apple ID and hijack your entire ID when using these security keys? Also it’s so confusing. Security keys and then there is Apple passkeys. Why are there 2 different new things going around and which one is going to be the main or better long term choice? Obviously having a security key is nice since its not storing anything online. It’s completely local to your “key”. Lastly how many devices or things will 1 security key work with and if it’s only one device these will not be great at all since if you have several hundred websites to log into you would spend a fortune to have security for all your log ins. @FrazzleCat Жыл бұрын
On most accounts, I don't know if this is true for apple, you typically get some kind of recovery key (a series of numbers, or some such) that can act as a back up. If you lose your key(s) then you can use the backup code to get into the account and remove them. However, without such a code, no, you would not be able to get into the account to remove the keys. Being able to get into the account (without an emergency backup code) would defeat the existence of the keys.

NFC tags come in a lot of different styles. Everything from stickers to magnets buttons is really pretty in this what they can do with the NFC technology with that in mind you could take an NFC tag and put it on your desk and that way when you’re sitting at your desk working all day all you have to do is move your phone to the appropriate spot on your desk and it would take an unlock. This could be very helpful, if the security key manufactures adopted some of these other form factors, and I think a great one would be a watch band something you wear already

@PayetteForward Жыл бұрын
You can share keys, yes. Keys aren't a replacement for passwords at this point - you'll still need to know them - but they're a step in that direction. At this point, they're a replacement for the six-digit two-factor authentication codes that you have to enter when you set up a new device. (So you won't be using these keys all that much.) With regard to third-party apps, we'll see how that shakes out.

As far as I know, that's a password manager, which is different than a physical security key. Security keys don't actually store passwords at all or even replace them - they replace the six-digit (or similar) two-factor authentication codes that end up being texted to you after you log in. At this point, they're not actually replacing passwords at all, but they are designed to keep you safer than current methods of two-factor authentication by restricting your logins to a physical location - wherever your key is.

I appriciate the video demonstrating and showing how to setup, but I'm still not understanding how you use them once they are setup. Purchases through app store don't trigger 2FA do they? The only thing I can think of that triggers 2FA for my apple id, is when I sign into my id on a new device, and I think the last time I needed to do that, it just asked me to hold my existing phone in close proximity to it (I assume because it was using Bluetooth). I suppose logging into apple id on computer would trigger 2FA.. Right? So once the keys are setup in iOS, that still wouldn't protect any of your other accounts besides your Apple ID, right? I'm very interested in using these, I'm just not understanding the whole work flow Another thing for people to keep in mind is that the iPads don't have Nfc scanners, so they will need to pick keys with the right type of connection for their device

I still dont understand what I do with these keys? how do i use that? do I need it every time to unlock the phone? do I just have to hold it near a phone when I want to log into a website account? how does that key know my password for a specific account like my bank account? I am very confused!

I linked up my YubiKey 5C NFC (USB-C) and my backup YubiKey 5 NFC (USB-A). My work 2021 MBP14 is my daily driver, but I was annoyed that I had to remove my personal 2015 MBAir13 as that device tops out at macOS Monterey 12.6.3.

Why aren’t any of these covered so the plug in part has less chance of being damaged? I wouldn’t use it on a key ring

So, if I understand this, you don't need the key to just log into your phone (you just use your PW/FaceID) its only when you log into your Apple Account. (as a second-factor of authorization), right? So if someone got your phone and PW, they can't change your AppleID PW. This is great if you lose your phone, but if someone robs you, they will take your phone and keys (and security key). Seems like Apple could incorporate this into AirTags and/or Apple Watches, to use them as keys (need to enter your watch password on your watch, and the AirTag has to be very close to the phone, or print a QR code on the back that you can scan with non-NFC devices). I literally just took all my keys off my key ring because I hate the bulk. (my house has a keypad lock). So i just have my car keyfob and AirTag.

I tried looking up those recommended keys like you guys showed, but didn’t give us a chance to really see any names of keys to lock up when I did that. It came up with a little triangle with a ! In middle of it with the word James beside it. So I clicked on it and closed it out. I’m hoping I got rid of it did that mean I was hacked?

How is the security key that much better than two factor authentication.? I have a PC I don’t use very much, so should I just wait till Apple comes out with one?
@PayetteForward Жыл бұрын
It's a replacement for two-factor authentication, but is it better? Maybe. What it does is restrict the usage based on your location, and not on anything sent wirelessly to your phone or another device.

@@PayetteForward thanks. I think I’m gonna stick with the two factor I’m not famous and I’ll wait for Apple to release theirs before I make a decision. I’m afraid all lose them.

Those are not the only people who might want to use them. I would be wiling to buy one myself. I would just save up for the NFC and fingerprint option.

What if anyone steals your iphone and security key you have with all your keys? Isn't easier ?

I like the security keys where you still have to use passwords with the security keys

what if your iphone is stolen along with the key?

Why do we have to buy two?

Those keys can be stolen or lost too, beside having another thing to worry about.

Hmmm. Not convinced .. yet. I have an iPhone 14pro max and an older Mac book pro with big sur 11.7.4 only. I’d like a key set that works with both devices not just my iPhone. I’ll wait

So how am I not safe without a security key? So now anyone that finds my security key can have access to my devices without a passcode finger print or my face that’s GREAT
