This happened with an ASUS ZenFone 2 I fixed. It had a full short in the 1.8V rail of the power supply which prevented any power going in to the eMMC chip and hence the phone was dead. I applied 2 Volts to the shorted rail, it drew 1.2A for a few seconds and before I even got to know where the heat was coming from, the short was gone. I immediately removed the power supply and powered on the phone. Everything was fine except WiFi/Bluetooth/FM. I replaced the WiFi module later on (BCM4339XKUBG) and the board still works to this day perfectly.

simple , effective, thanks to experience over board failures , caps , mostly tantalum, go short and explode when in high current circuits ( oscilloscopes ) but in phones not enough power to explode , luckily many caps are not needed in the finished products , in cause development of each board is by differnet labs , and so redundant filtering occurs , and you have shown this !!bravo Sorin

You make a shortkiller homemade :D it's correct the VCC_MAIN is a BIG track and it's easy to fix if something goes wrong.. but u must buy the tool to separate the sandwich like the Sunshine SS-T12A- Main unit + T12A-X3 it's a good deal.. or u can buy the tool to put on your hotair (I do not recommend it is very uncomfortable) and yes.. to test the sandwich u MUST need isocket 3 in 1 or something similar (MEGAIDEA for example) and than u must assemble it with a BGA Reballing Stencil and yep it's no finish yet.. a good solder paste 148°C temperature (mechanic xp5) it's a good deal..

Hi, Sorin. In my opinion, heating the board up to separate the sandwich will not nelt down every solder ball along. I think the solder which holds the boards together has a lower melting point than the one holding other components.

I found that resistance of the wires plays important part in this process. Before you apply the 9.8 amps in the phone you touched together the Power supply which we can see in the upper left corner and voltage went up to 1.something volts, nearly the same as if you were connecting that to the phone. So if you have wires with closer to zero resistance more amps should go through the short and less wires will be melted. :) Cheers. P. S: I made myself some wires for power supply by stripping a 3 prong power supply cable (for PC or monitor) and soldering them on both sides - where they connect to the psu and the aligator clips. Hope that helps anyone. Thanks.

You need a supercap, like the ones they use for building capacitor-based car battery replacements and some short and thick wires. Or some e-cigarette-grade Li-ion 18650 cells, paralleled with some short thick wires. Also the wires you have for applying that current to the board are below standard. An upgrade can be cheap: just parallel 2 or 3 wires like they use in a house electrical installation. Usually that is 2.5mm. They'll carry 20amps without heating up too much. Each. For a guy that likes to play with amps, you have surprisingly few amps available to play with: just 4.8 and 9.8 if you borrow another lab power supply. But when trying to fix an iPhone board, it is better to be able to gradually increase the amps. If you would connect a charged supercap to that thing, it will probably blow up. BTW, you're brave. First, you douse that hot board with petrol and right after that you connect a current source to it. It might spark and set the board on fire. That would make a nice video: Sorin fixes a board by setting it on fire. You definitely need to get some better wires. You cannot set your voltage higher because it will damage the electronics when the short clears but you need a higher voltage to compensate for the voltage drop in your thin wires. So, get better wires.

@gorky_vk4 жыл бұрын
you can always replace current sense resistor with lower value to trick PS to think current is lower. But protection is there with reason, PS components probably can't supply higher current for any usable time and you'll just kill it fast.
