I mean a lot of people forget the price factor as well. Why not compare a DLSR + Lens with the same price to the iPhone XS. To see if the Iphone XS is worth the money just considering the camera performance with a DLSR with same price point.
@yureino
@yureino 5 жыл бұрын
Monkeypixels yeah, definitely. But if we just look at the price point itself, is it worth it? Besides the fact it does a whole lot other things aside from taking pictures. While the comparison here is an iphone XS of about $1500 to a $8000 DLSR which is solely for photography. Considering the price alone and to this quality of camera + all other functions, shouldnt it be considered as rather cheap? Or are cameras are actually considered too expensive? But at second thought, the total demand of smartphones vs cameras are a huge difference. Therefore the profit margin of a camera should be higher.

@@yureino you'll get better results with a 8 year old DSLR ex:Canon t2i + Canon 50mm F1.8 you can get that with less than 500 dollars... So yeah smartphones are a still pretty far behind specially if you are going to print it, so yeah is worth it, maybe not 8000 dollar camera but a cheaper one
@yureino
@yureino 5 жыл бұрын
thecolorofmysould would the same camera and lens be good enough for all situations? For daylight/lowlight/extreme lowlight/video/slowmo/timelapse/stabilisation/macro/HDR situation/etc. People may complain, but the funny thing is so many KZbin reviewers complain about the dynamic range on those smartphones when the video from their dlsr camera also get overexpose and blown out highlight. I mean, smartphone camera has become so flexible and so easy to use, easily on par with most portable digital camera. Some even better than most entry level dlsr.
@vikingodc
@vikingodc 5 жыл бұрын
@@yureino the lens has nothing to do with the frame rate... Alright, let's pretend you were refering to the camera body... anyway, you get to change the focal lenght on your dslr, not with the very limited 2 or 3 lenses on a phone. Even the cheapest dslr lens gets better glass than a smartphone's camera. Any DSLR manual mode, can beat an Iphone XS anytime anyday at any situation given, regarding still photography. If you speak about video, it is an absolutely different thing, and yes, there are mirrorless cameras ready to kick a smartphone's ass. Just grab a 200 dollar canon t3 camera with a 50 dollar 50 1.8 and the smartphone is finished (still photography). This shouldn't even be arguable, if people knew a bit about still photography (not saying you don't). Again, it is quite a different panorama if we speak about video recording. A good smartphone will be 10,000 more practical to carry in your pocket than a big fancy mirrorles setup (which will probably get better results in the proper hands). A proper comparison, is not the one where you try to emulate both pictures. A proper comparison, would be that where you unleash the power of a long exposure, the sharpness of a fast shutter, the uber shallow depth of field of a ff lens or even apsc lens AND THEN try to make the smartphone to catch up. Don't get me wrong, I use whatever camera crosses my path when I need them, but let's not fool around pretending that a smartphone's still camera is more capable. Cheers

Very interesting video, thanks for that. I have an iPhone XS which I recently used abroad in a very sunny country. The pictures are great overall but: -images are darker than in reality (a darker blue sky, darker green for the trees) -it struggles in intense sunlight causing light arcs and green dots -when the subject is far away they can look like they're melting into the background So this made me research whether I should buy a DSLR (like entry level Canon EOS 200D). Such a difficult decision! It would definitely improve the quality of pictures, but the question is if it would improve the quality enough to justify the price..

Why you didn't choose the 5D IV for example? It's cheaper and makes more sense for this type of photography. Wow the 1dx ii costs 6000 dollars, but it's made specially for sport photography and videomaking. The combination of the 5D IV and the lens in the video would cost less but gives better images.

Interesting video. I'm not a professional photographer but I love taking photos as a hobby. Started off with a Kodak point and shoot digital, to a Nikon D70 and now a Nikon D800. Honestly, most of the pictures I share with friends are viewed online and these camera phones are getting really, really good. Even the built in software (and now hardware with the dual lenses) on some of the phones allow for passable "bokeh" for portraits. And for 90% of the time, pictures taken with your phone and processed with the right software is good enough to share with friends and family. It's not until you blow the pictures up to 100% that you'll discover the iPhone's pictures suffer in detail and quality due to the smaller sensor, but when will your friends and family pixel peep on Facebook or Instagram anyway? Nonetheless, I will always love my DSLR and there's nothing better than looking through an optical viewfinder.

It is not only mpxl count that matters, Dynamic range (most DSLRs have +14 stops of DR, phones about 10 usable stops), color depth, Sensor size (low light/depth of field/lens F-stop) etc. If you grade phone images to match 1dx, the images of the phone cant even touch DSLR. Ofc you can match DSLR to phone images. These phone to a professional camera tests are bit funny.
@Thevikingcam
@Thevikingcam 5 жыл бұрын

@Quoutub
@Quoutub 5 жыл бұрын
The viking cam It's not only sensor specs that matters. When photographers say that a phone can't compete with a DSLR, I notice that they either live in the past or are not good in physics. Of course a phone can't compete when it comes to bokeh, high resolution or tele/macro lenses. But when it comes to 12 megapixel wide-angle out-of-camera jpgs, a Google phone camera will often give you better results than a DSLR. The image processing of a Google phone is much, much better. By using multi frame noise reduction (8 frames) a Google phone can capture as much light as a 4/3" camera + f/2.0 lens. So when you use a slow wide-angle lens, the phone can actually capture more light than a DSLR in low-light conditions!! Google phones also expose much smarter than a DSLR. (Yes, you can expose manually, but a DSLR won't adjust the tone mapping intelligently, which will ruin the jpg) Furthermore when you want the same depth of field as a smartphone, you will capture the same amount of light as a smartphone in low-light conditions. The automatic white balance is also much, much better. The automatic Canon white balance will ruin your photos in tungsten light, then the DSLR has no chance against the phone! In my opinion it's also much easier to hold a phone steady. I have compared a DSLR without image stabilization and a phone without image stabilization and I get good handheld results with a 2-3x longer exposure time than the DSLR despite no image stabilization.

on FF, 24mm can have pretty amazing bokeh too, when wide open below f/2. the funny thing is, if we use the cheaper XR with only one camera (the better 26mm camera), we should be able to take much better portrait mode photos in low light conditions. hopefully some 3rd party camera apps can use the wide angle camera to shoot portrait mode on XS MAX.

unreal. I even took a video with my GH5 and compared it to my iPhone XS Max , both at 4k30 and my iPhone blew my 2,600 dollar camera setup away on social media/youtube because of Smart HDR. the only difference a DLSR/SLR would win in video/photos is like you said - if printed on a canvas or on big screen TV.
@MarksTech

oh for sure! thats is a huge bonus of a fast lens. but to the untrained eye, and on instagram - most people who aren't photographers/videographers wont even realize it. also in lowlight, my Pana/Leica 1.4 lens eats my iPhone Max lol. but during the day, if im filming without a UV filter, I gotta bump up my F stop or my shutterspeed so everything isnt blown out. but for someone who doesnt wanna fiddle around with manual settings and things, the iPhone Max is definitely one hell of a camera! just for reference, the photo comparison at 4:20 , the iPhone is on the right cause the hair gets a little blurred on the portrait mode, but look at all the detail skill kept in the background as compared to your canon 😳🤯
@GuyRobertKernisant
@GuyRobertKernisant 5 жыл бұрын
Instagram doesn't even post the original picture that you upload since every picture is compressed, so all the extra details from the Canon are mostly lost in the image compression... Not only that but the native screen resolution on the iPhone XS can't exceed 1125pixels from the 4032x3024 pixels taken with the camera. What is being displayed on screen already has 3x less pixels than the image shot...
@GuyRobertKernisant

I completly agree with you that DSLRs or Mirrorless are overkill for social media. We wouldn't share as much... But I take out my camera for special occasions like family gatherings and when I'm lucky enough to nail the shot I print them out. I don't get the same quality with my phone...

Interesting to hear that from a professional photographer. Thought most were hardcore DSLR-fans. Smartphones will never come close to the sensor size or the variety of optics available for DSLRs, so there will always be scenarios where a DSLR is better. But for the average user (like me) Smartphone-cameras are all you need, I think. Greetings from Germany ;)

You can tell the difference but it takes examination! So well done to the iPhone. Tip: Dont look for the most detailed image(the iPhone tends to over sharpen a lot of its images post processing so the sharpness might fool you). Look instead at depth of field, dynamic range and what image is genuinely better looking! Also the bokeh effect tells a lot. DSLR's tend to blow out lights more than smartphones giving you that really nice blurred light affect, probably due to faster shutter speed! Also DSLR's are much better at focusing the foreground and blurring the back. In the iPhone you will see strands of her hair not in focus and mistaken for the background!

i think its better to compare a dslr that has the same price point of XS. comparing to a full frame body and lens is a bit unfair (although kudos to the iphone for being close to the quality on a mobile screen standpoint). maybe a mid range slr with a 50/35mil or kit lens vs iphone xs would fall under the same price :)

It is hard to determine the difference. That said, this boils down to the best artistic ability. Another benefit of the iPhone despite the smaller sensor is that you could bring it into water without worry and get some cool shots. A DSLR, unless you have some waterproof case, would turn into an expensive mistake near water. :-) That to me means the new Xs or Xs Max iPhones open up more artistic possibilities.

And an iPhone can be less intimidating vs a big DSLR so it can sometimes get nice candid shots. Each have their strengths and technical specs differences. I don't think one will ever replace the other, it is just a fact you use one for one thing and another for another thing. Though it is getting much closer to blending. :-)

The hdr mode on the iphone is pretty good I must admit. Every photo I picked for looking best looking was the iphone. The bokeh on the iphone in these photos destroyed the bokeh from the from the Canon 1dx mark ii. The dynamic range from the iphone destroyed the dynamic range on the Canon 1dx mark ii. But tbf Canon dynamic range tend to be shitty when compared to Nikon and Sony. Bokeh is harder for iphone to create in more complex scenes. If your doing mainly facebook, instagram, casual shooting, etc iphone is great. If you doing professional level work and need the af speed, resolution, and dynamic range go with a dslr or mirrorless because post production quality is superior to the phone picture quality. Maybe 1 day cameras too will have a good hdr mode built in the camera like the iphone to process jpegs with.

I refuse to take photos on a phone... but the sad truth is within maybe 3 years computational photography will be just as good as Hasselblad H6.

The iPhone XS is the clear winner. No wonder it is made by Apple, not a shitty comany like Canon that makes printers, projectors and everything else addition to some camera. You can also share and edit your photoes on the iPhone, while you cant do it on a camera lol.
