@@terraincognitagaming Most actually advertise GtG response time but like I said it's not true 1ms given the fact the fastest overdrive mode is unusable and that's the only mode which can come close to this claims - basically they only put this useless mode there to advertise 1ms for the ignorant masses.
@forestR1

@@terraincognitagaming it's up to the manufacturer weather they want to specify G2G or MPRT in their advertising. traditionally it is g2g but some manufacturers use MPRT because there's no rule that says they can't. - but in both cases Rosen is correct; those times are only achieved through an overdrive setting that utterly unusable for the user and ONLY included to be able to turn it on and measure a "1ms" response time so they can market it as 1ms.

1ms response is for gray to gray transitions (e.g. a brightness change from 180 to 200) and not from black to white (0 to 255). These 1ms times also need an overdrive setting which cause overshoot... Hardware Unboxed monitor reviews are very detailed in this regard.
@natemevec9692
@natemevec9692 2 жыл бұрын
While this is true, I never liked G2G response times as the advertised metric, I'd much rather be told black to white as that's what the ultimate response time is. If you can do 1ms black to white then you clearly will do faster than that in G2G. Would just mean the consumer market needs to learn what is accepted as "fast" response times for black to white. This video was a really cool look at what panels generally give the fastest raw response time.
@TehJumpingJawa
@TehJumpingJawa 2 жыл бұрын
Precisely what I was going to say; you can't judge monitor performance with only a single metric, utilizing only a single benchmark. The rule of thumb for today still holds true; modern high refresh rate IPS-like displays offer the best compromise between refresh rate, viewing angles, colour accuracy, brightness, and price.

@Bannockburn111
@Bannockburn111 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lishtenbird Seriously? More accurate information is "borderline misinformation"? Tim's (Hardware Unboxed) analyses are the best you can find on KZbin, but the fact is, his philosophy is to accept things more or less as the industry exists today; he'll call a monitor that is only capable of displaying 80% of its claimed refresh rate "good". In my book, that's a "failed at least 20% of the time" monitor. I have a very nice monitor running at 160Hz (LG38GN950); it's a great display compared to most I've owned in the last decade. But the picture STILL lags behind the Sony GDM-FW900 I had before I decided to go with larger displays. I ran it at 85Hz - and it still produced a smoother image than my 160 Hz IPS panel. Wendell's analysis here tells us WHY. While the best CRT's made in the early 2000's weren't perfect, they were far better than the LCDs that replaced them in many ways, and still are. Tim's data is fantastic information for choosing between LCD displays, but the whole LCD class of picture is only a step forward from CRT in cost, display size, and potential impact on the environment (I shudder to think what a 38" CRT would cost, and weigh!) - otherwise, well, we simply can't judge them by standards that existed a generation ago, or they'd look like failures.

You know what really surprised me? Seeing Burn in on LCD displays at Airports. I thought this was LONG gone when the CRT went out of favor. what's funny or still and something that's quite unbelievable is that a mechanical display would actually be far more reliable than some of the digital displays or at least not experienced something like screen burn-in. most of these times at airports and especially at bus stations are usually very rarely updated and therefore a mechanical this place sure seems to be a much better Avenue or something like this but they keep using these digital LCD screens that suffer horrible burn in after just about a year. let alone all the locations that have these so-called digital displays where none of them ever seem to be in working order. Your fast food joint for example. as odd as this may seem it has to be someone surreal realizing that some of the display Technologies we had in the very beginning would still work hundreds of years later.

Disagree. Hardware Unboxed should just do 0-100 testing. But they dont want to do the work or piss off monitor brands. LG already cried wolf because they switched from 10-90 to 3-97 and they had to calm LG down. Imagine the backlash if they test 0-100.... They cant lose their free merchandise via reviews (they mostly get to keep the gear they test).

@@riba2233 lmao thats why in this video he proves slow pixel response equals multiple squares lighting up. But naw its totally okay to misrepresent data because of a lame excuse like "human eye" lmao. You remind me of the kids who said 120hz was a gimmick because the "human eye can't see it" when in reality, we can. When gaming, especially FPS games, you will 100% GAIN motion blur (which is bad) from slow pixel response even though you have high refresh rate. I can literally setup an in person test showing you 120hz OLED with and without BFI enabled vs a 360hz monitor, and the OLED will shit on the 360hz in terms of motion clarity. Hell my viewsonic at 120hz with BFI enabled looks better than 240hz and 360hz native monitors. Because the pixel response actually fits in the 120hz window aka 8.33ms. meanwhile 240hz and 360hz displays cant reach their per refresh cycle goals. (4.16ms for 240hz and 2.77ms for 360hz). The "god tier" 360hz display, which doesnt exist, would need to literally have a full 0-100 pixel time of 2.77ms or faster (1.5ms, 1ms, 0.5ms) in order to retain high motion clarity. Those 360hz monitors have a low (fastest) time of about 4ms and high (slowest) of about 13ms when looking at proper 0-100 times. I understand you want to suck the teat of hardware unboxed but their testing is flawed. Nothing in life is measured in 10-90 or 3-97 timings. You dont run a mile and then cut out 20% or 6% of your time and brag about how fast you are. The only time in electronic engineering 10-90 is used is for QUICK diagnosis only. As you can have reported "expected" 10-90 times and then "actual" 10-90 times to compare. So you can quicky find an issue. (Same goes for car electrical systems). In reality, and for review purposes, 10-90 and 3-97 is misleading customers into buying shit products. And people wonder why we still dont have new display technologies. Because misinformed customers will keep buying shit products thinking they are good. Hardware Unboxed is doing potential customers a service by lying. Level1techs cant say that, because they arent trying to start a youtube war between channels. But i can. And i have.

I've never been more happy with such a well rounded overall monitor. great for text because it has a pixel pitch of 0.25, 2560x1600 resolution which is honestly more than enough. 30 inch is perfect, not too big and not too small... I can't go with a 43 inch 4k - pixel pitch is a bit smaller and you can see the difference, text is small and monitor IS HUGE so you have to keep it closer.

From what I know, Amoled is the slightly modified OLED panel that is more versatile (screen size not a problem), advanced and expensive than the OLED one but the manufacturers refuse to put it say on monitors or whatever because the demand and sales regarding these products are not high enough to make a profit out of it and to justify the effort and costs.

Tvs are wrgb and amoleds and pmoleds are different from them, they may all be oleds in the end but their subpixel layout and construction is different hence why you usually not see the in between sizes, wrgb (the one used by Tvs) has the drawback that due to the extra white subpixel it causes text not to be as sharp when viewing it closer, as in monitor distance for instance, and creating regular rgb panels on that size is still quite expensive, and yields are not great or the same as compared to other technologies like ips, VA or TN or even the other oled ones from what I recall

The same reason we don't see many 1500:1 contrast ratio IPS panels in desktop monitors, but still see many consumer laptops with those. *Volume*: desktops hardly sell ~80 mil units a year from all brands and mostly to businesses -> the monitor market is very, very, very small and cheap compared to phones >> tablets > laptops > TVs >> desktops. So big panel fabs (not dissimilar to CPU fabs in pricing!) want the highest margins in the largest markets with the lowest costs. Desktop monitors are simultaneously worse on all metrics.

I guess you never bothered with the U28E590D which while not stellar is notably better than the U28D. Anyway, cool video, and yeah, it would be nice to have a marketing standard and actual panel specs included in monitor specs. I still say OLED is still too much of a throwaway tech for me to spend money on. To me they're like Plasma was to CRT tech - Better in a lot of ways, but it's doomed to be e-waste sooner rather than later. I feel it's a stopgap between regular LCD and something better.

The thing is that whether you have a TN, VA or IPS display at home for your average user it's hard or impossible to know the difference of how much better OLED can look when you don't have them side by side to compare. Sure there are videos like this one comparing but unless you can try it you aren't really going to know imo. I have an IPS and a VA high refresh display as my gaming set up and if they made 1440p 27" OLED monitors I'd get one. I have an OLED Switch and the black levels are absolutely amazing. QD-OLED coming this year and I am buying one, maybe two, maybe three. But yeah. EFF LCD, OLED is future. OLED is BAE. I agree we get lies about monitors all the time, ESPECIALLY from known youtubers who do monitor reviews (not you). I own an USB oscilloscope and photodiode. I was able to do my own testing. And when testing FULL 0-100 pixel response times, I found that online reviewers are not showing the full speed. They claim "10-90" or "3-97" is "good enough" and its not. Because when you have say a 360hz monitor, that means each single HZ will change at a rate of 2.77ms. But the display, as you said in this, is NOT CAPABLE of refreshing that fast. The pixel response on 360hz monitors are about 6ms AVERAGE using 10-90 timing. Go into 0-100 times and it gets even worse. RIGHT NOW, my ViewSonic XG2431 which just came out in 2021, "certified bluebursters 2.0", using 120hz mode and large vertical totals while also using the custom flicker backlight utility, you get CLEARER motion clarity than when running the monitor in its 240hz native mode. That is because of pixel response. 240hz means pixel response needs to be 4.16ms or faster (3ms, 2ms, 1ms). And the viewsonic panel simply is NOT capable of running that fast. In my own testing, for 10-90 (sad i know) was about 5ms without overdrive. This means its not fast enough for 240hz. Now going into 120hz mode, that means 8.33ms per 1hz. which is slower than the 5ms average I got for 10-90 times. so the MOTION CLARITY using this custom resolution 120hz mode with custom tuned backlight flickering, means the motion clarity BEATS anything ive ever seen. it even beats the 240hz native mode.... its insane. OLED will have faster pixel response times, usually 1ms or FASTER for full black to white times. that means OLED in theory is capable of true 1000hz display modes. but you need 1000fps to fill that 1000hz. if you don't have the FPS, then its useless. this is where black frame insertion comes into play. it reduces the sample and hold time which mimics how higher refresh rates work. and OLED is the best for this technology thanks to insanely fast pixel response times. IN THEORY, a 500hz OLED with BFI will look AS GOOD AS a native 1000hz display, and yet you wont need 1000fps, only 500fps. Which brings me back to gaming monitors. 120-240hz is all you need, as long as you have BFI enabled. AS FAR AS TEST SQUARES and this information. I have been banned like 100 times from r/monitors on reddit because people simply wont fucking listen to me. And here you are, saying everything ive said about OLED and chase squares. we need these reviewers like Hardware Unboxed to do proper 0-100 pixel testing because IT MATTERS when it comes to actual performance. Imagine running a mile, but instead of measuring the START to FINISH times, someone measures your 10-90 time!!!!! cutting off 20% of your time making you seem faster at running than you really are. Racing, sports, any subject you can think of. If you rated your performance at 10-90, you would be lying! Which is why generally monitors reviewers who do pixel testing, LIE about the quality. @level1techs if you want some help with setting up a way to test pixel response, well here are my parts. the pico-scope found on amazon. I got the cheapest one. and then from thor-labs based in new jersey I got a photodiode which is 5ns rise/fall times meaning its faster than any gaming monitor on the market in terms of reading. and you can 100% see for yourself for less than 300 bucks. crazy cheap way to get into pixel response testing. sadly the SOFTWARE that comes with the pico-scope only allows 20-80 or 10-90 "auto" timing results. You can highlight the graph yourself and find 0-100 but it would be faster to have it do it for you. funny enough, their software is open source, if i knew how to code, which i dont, i could in theory create a 0-100 time reading to get more accurate results. but i do this shit as a hobby and well you do it for a living.

UPDATE bought the alienware, its been delivered. LITERALLY sub 1ms full pixel response times. The fastest transition was 0.1ms and the slowest was 0.8ms. Tested using a USB oscilloscope (picoscope 2204a) and thorlabs SM05PD3A photodiode using an SM to BNC change over cable, also made by thorlabs. photodiode rise/fall time is 15nm meaning 0.000015ms which is overkill for measuring monitors. my results don't match any known review (HUB and some other random female youtuber) for the alienware. hoping tftcentral or rtings review matches my results and proves me right. because its hecking fast. but i dont know if they updated their tools yet to something capable of measuring fast displays. i know one youtuber uses a 1000fps camera, but by doing so, you are limited to 1ms as the lowest you can measure. so sub 1ms pixel response wont happen. and because the update rate is rather low as well, you can end up seeing multiple ms times when in reality its actually much lower, simply because 1000fps camera's aren't fast enough for proper measurement. thus me using much cheaper tools that are meant for measuring with speed.... the picoscope 2204a is only $160 and comes with software to track recordings from the thorlabs photodiode that I bought which was about $80 bucks, and then $20 for the SM to BNC cable to make sure it can plug into the usb oscilloscope.

Well its true that IPS is not best for gaming, and i used to be like IPS is way too blurry in motion for gaming. But some of new IPS panels have got good enough. It may not be the fastest for gaming but on last black friday i decided to upgrade from 1080p 144hz TN monitor to 1440p 165hz IPS, and it looks so much better, and response times are close enough that i dont see much of difference in their speed. And i do play some fast games where its easy to notice slow panel like Quake Champions.

Another thign to keep in mind is that grey-to-grey transitions are *slower* than black to white or white to black transitions for IPS panels. And without image processing (game mode: on): false colour galore.

really didn't want to get into game mode and vrr since a lot of the time that also disables overshoot and other tech that makes the panel "as fast as possibe" the point here was that allowing everything to drive the panel as hard as the panel can be driven it still not really refreshing that fast. a lot of the time the rise time is small in comparison to the fall time, too, which means you have 2-3 frames on screen at once. all of those things to play a factor but I was surprised how many people were suggesting that if two displays say 240hz their behavior at that speed is the same

After reading the comments in the Acer video and watching this video I'm convinced. You turned my preconceptions about monitors on their head. I admit when you said 'ips displays aren't known for gaming' I had to check the release date of the video, I haven't heard someone say that since ~2017. For my next gaming only display I am far more likely to get a VA monitor now and I'll definitely be checking out the channel for more monitor reviews!

if you're playing shooters and fast twitch games, the fps is noticeable up until 180-200Hz. After that I don't notice anything. If you're reading texts and documents and you do a lot of scrolling, even 240HZ doesn't feel that much. Unfortunately, most of the monitors nowadays struggle to go beyond 60Hz, every generation there's only a handful of them that are decent if you want a fast monitor, but they too might be compromised in other ways (or cost a lot). It really is unfortunate. My hope is that oled/qd-oled monitors will fix most this once they move closer to the mainstream.

Well that's part of the point here. The panel type matters less now than the generation of panel. New IPS panels really are faster than old tn panels but it doesn't mean that all tn panels are inferior to ips. So if color accuracy is important look at that. If speeds important look for high speed footage

There is also one more thing that literally no one is talking about - not everybody can see and benefit from faster refresh screen. I can't see any difference whatsoever between my old piece of junk 21" Asus TN 1080p 60Hz monitor (very very cheap buy years ago) my previous main display Samsung 32" C32HG70 (VA 144Hz 1440p HDR 600 Quantum dot) and my current monitor Samsung 28" UR550 60Hz (IPS 60Hz 4K HDR400). My PC can render ~100 fps @ 1440p and I test it with 144 fps and lower settings. I decided that if I can't see the difference in speed then I will go for 137 PPI instead of 91 on older faster screen and its awesome :) If someone will say I'm not a gamer I'm playing on PC since 1996. I just don't play fast online shooters anymore.

IPS Gaming monitors come with different overdrive settings which will decrease response time at the cost of peak overshoot. Kinda strange how you didn't mention this. Good overdrive settings are one of the main things I look for in a gaming monitor.

Probably because any IPS panel that has overdrive settings that allow it to advertise speeds near TN, do so with an overshoot cost that makes them totally unusable at that setting.
