Especially the scene with the lake/river (the one after the mountain scene) and cloud reflection on the water. Much more detail in the left image where the right there is almost no detail at all in the reflection. As for the mountain scene, the trees just below the mountain look like a very poor photoshop job instead of looking natural.

@yo yo You could think of a Plasma tv as a OLED but more. To some, it may look better than a OLED. But a plasma costs more, has more weight and has more burn-in. @yo yo I didn't say better than OLEDs, I said better than LCDs. And that's true, because CRTs have true blacks like OLEDs as both use emissive displays (switch off pixels not used). And pretty much all CRTs had excellent full-gamut color range. Yes, they were absolutely better (in colors) than LCDs when LCD's were new, and they're probably still better than most screens today.

I used to work on OLEDS on the chemical side. I'm truly curious how this tech will impact pricing as the biggest bonus I see is panel yield. The problem with RGB OLEDs is that the materials (specifically the emissive) layer from any one color can kill the others, so if your red and green printing passes went great but your blue print pass was a bit off you will end up with a bunch of dead pixels or sections. As this panel is only printing blue on the OLED layer, sealing it, and then using quantum dots outside the conductive space, the accuracy of the print does not need to be as tight and the printing tech itself can be massively simplified which in theory could conservatively put the yield of these panels >85%. This yield issue was huge in the industry with one large manufacturer struggling to hit 25% yield on finished panels around the 55" size on a good day. So if their yields are increasing the way I think they are that is a whole lot less dead panels that have to be rolled into the cost of one good panel. Note: A bit of what I have stated above is over-simplified, some printing technologies use multiple passes for the emissive layers where as ink-jet can do it in one shot. None of these are easy as the droplet size is stupidly small and impacted greatly by static charge, and trying to maintain an even charge across a large panel is mind bendingly hard as you are doing it in a purged and dry environment because O2 and moisture kills these compounds fast. Then comes drying all this printed mess, if your pressure and temp controls are not absolutely tight you can still get enough splatter from one pixel well over to the next to ruin a panel.

Also, I don't trust Samsung with color calibration, their panels are way too saturated. I'm watching this video trough an OLED and the "normal" side of the screen looked way better more natural. Especially in the first picture, the one with the poppy field. The Samsung side was so saturated that it lost all the definition in the upper portion of the screen, you could no longer make out the individual flowers. I know that in person it will look different, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

As someone who has worked in a TV store before I'm a little disappointed when you showed the side by side WOLED vs QDOLED and didn't show or mention the picture settings.. like others have mentioned, the dramatic differences can be pretty easily simulated with currently available TV's with just a "vivid" or "dynamic" setting change. The technology looks really cool and looks like it really should be an improvement but I always like to make sure its apples to apples when comparing TVs.

Not entirely the case here.. your settings don’t really matter when each display has its limitations and peaking those limitations is where the current OLEDs can’t complete next to the QD sets. Have you ever tried comparing the original Samsung S9 OLED back from 2012/2013 to any of the 2021 OLEDs ! Those still show better and brighter colours than anything on the consumer market today. Even without HDR or 4K ! So all the side by side comparisons r actually exactly what you should expect from the newer Samsung sets.. As LG panels simply can’t do certain things.. which has always been an inherent weakness of their approach to OLEDs. Samsung always had a more superior approach and you still can’t beat their first OLED back from 2013 to anything in the market. The side by side comparisons actually look very similar to what you’d see between the Samsung S9 form 2013 vs a LG G1. The S9 didn’t have any ABL.. The S9 was extremely vibrant.. greyscale was near perfect. But was poorly received by consumers because it was marginally expensive to the LGs at the time.

I remember taking a class in visual density, back in the film days, it was titled " how white is white" . It did venture into apparent white and balanced white ( scientifically) measured. It was in conjunction with a class in color reproduction. Color is so very subjective and is influenced by environment. I have done color correction for so many years that tinted glasses don't work for me when they have a color bias.

This video is a lot of BS - it takes no account how perception or colour theory works - I don't use vivid mode - You never see these pure emitted colours day to day - the biggest emitter our star throws incidental light everywhere, colours shading other colours etc . Linus is full of crap - it's only redder in comparison - look around you probably the brightest colours your LCD screen - colours naturally desaturate in full direct sun light . We want accurate - great for games like raymond legends or cartoons - but unless watching pure lasers on a black screen in a dark room . Brightness is already good - highly over-rated for most .saying that this is good tech - Linus I can see the difference in std scene straightaway - only would be case if "hyper" real bullshit look . - he's full of crap- I used to shoot Velvia fuji film - looked great - super saturated - but was it real?- now if he said the speakers make drum sets sound real - few it any speakers can do that- that's why you know some one is practicing straightaway as you walk down the road and you hear it

Those tvs are a bit of a hit or miss, the QN900A from Samsung gets pretty hot with just generic use, to the point my relatively small living room gets quite warm after an hour or so, never thought I'd be removing a night robe because of my tv but the A90j could be even worse¿ Who knows at this point technology demands are so extreme only extreme solutions and extreme price tags are viable

@@TGAPOO that's true, but it also has to do with what resolution your screen is using, all these 4k and 8k screens are unnecessary for a 5X3 inch screen size, i will stick with my 720p resolution phone any day, another thing that sucks with newer phones is the built in battery you can't replace unless you are an expert and know what your doing. the newer phones aren't meant to last that long anyway which is why so many people need to replace their phone with a new one within 2 years of getting it, it's sad to see so many people drop a grand on a device that will only last them a few years at best. but that's our current culture, always wasting money on shit they don't need or can really afford.

for anyone making jokes like "this looks great on my non-hdr lcd", you can absolutely tell the quality of displays by watching filmed footage on your display. Cameras are very picky, they make things like backlight bleed and bad contrast look AWFUL when filmed, and these artifacts are completely viewable on consumer grade LCD's. this especially works well for side by side comparisons, at 3:21 it's very obvious the LG's reds aren't as red. Yeah, you're not getting HDR red on the monitor you're looking at in your room, but you can still see the difference between the two TV's in the video. at 3:48 it's extremely obvious the ambers on the left are duller.

I would like to know the calibration settings of the lg TV in contrast to the Samsung. It's cool that Samsung finally jumped on the oled train to the future but I am entirely too skeptical on this comparison.

Yep you can't trust a comparison like that at all. Samsung most likely set the LG TV's color temperature way too high (because it looks extremely blue in many shots) and lowered the saturation to make the colors pop on their own TV. Also almost the entire video sounds like Samsung just handed Linus a script to read, or at least a big list of stuff he needs to talk about. This is why I don't like sponsored videos. You can't trust anything that's being said or shown.

Samsung has been on the OLED train. They are largest manufacturer of OLED screen for mobile devices. Yet curiously enough, they aren't using this "revolutionary" new technology for their existing OLED screens. Seems kinda strange if you ask me.

This reminds me of when Acura put their new TLX type S next to an Audi S4 in their unveiling on a quarter mile drag race. The TLX was faster than the S4 on that short of a drag, but when reviewers did a 1 mile drag race, it was revealed that the S4 was actually significantly faster than the TLX.

Interestingly, Sony just announced their new range of TVs using Samsung's QD-OLED panels. I'd definitely want to see how Sony is implementing their BRAVIA tech onto these panels.

Bravia is more of a brand than any specific technology. Their current displays use OLED panels produced by LG and are notorious for being the same picture quality as LG but with a considerable mark up for the brand recognition of Sony. It’s a shame really because Sony was responsible for producing the first ever LED backlit panel and OLED panel. I imagine they must have massively cut their R&D budget since almost all major innovations in display technology have come from LG and Samsung in the last 10 years. The next cycle seems to be the same with Sony’s decision to purchase QD OLED panels designed and manufactured by Samsung.

I trust Linus’ integrity to not deliberately mislead us, but I’ll reserve judgement for once these products are on the market and we get multiple independent reviews. If these displays suck, it would permanently damage Samsung’s relation with LMG and it would be a significant problem for them in the future. I am expecting these prototypes to be better than anything currently on the consumer market as Linus said, but that isn’t surprising. If anything, the competition is ALWAYS good for us consumers, because it would force LG to adapt and improve, even if these are just marginally better.

Displays with this color gamut have been around for almost a decade. The Vizio Reference Series was introduced to the public back at Vizio's CES in 2014. The models in that series were R65-B2 and R120-B2. The display featured 90% of the Rec.2020 or BT.2020 color gamut and Dolby Vision HDR. Now I know no one who isnt a multi-millionare would buy this thing but the technology that is just as capable has been around. It is great that they are finding these new ways but are they going to be better than what we already have? I am not sure.

I have always been interested in Samsungs QD-OLED technology since they first started researching into it. However, as I do a deeper dive into some of the more elusive questions (i.e How do the layers of the pixel direct the blue light within itself to the correct QD printed color? Quantum Confinement. What is quantum confinement? Quantum dots take the place of the colour filters that exist in WOLEDs. Each pixel in the QD-OLED would have 3 sub-pixels of Red (QD-Red), Green (QD-green), and Blue (no QD, just pass through). So imagine printing a giant array of dots on a clear substrate that would be Red, Green, Blank. QD is really just a colour filter (sort of)

LG's 42" OLED will likely be around $1K USD. Less in a year or two when they clear inventory for new models. Cut back on other expenses, save up, sell your old monitor and that's very obtainable.

If so why do so many of these side by side shots look like the new TV is so much warmer? Doesn't that make one of the TV's not accurate to the source? Like that shot with the moose. Calibration and color gamut are two separate issues. A perfectly calibrated monitor with a small color gamut will have perfectly accurate colors when, and only when, it's displaying colors within its gamut range.

You can be damn sure it wasn’t calibrated along to the same standard as their own. The fact that you can see an obvious difference in colours on camera says enough. Even though it might be true that the samsung has better coverage of the bt2020 standard, the difference is never that big, an average consumer would find it incredibly difficult to spot the difference in colour accuracy between these panels when they are both calibrated to the same scrutiny

The image of the moose in at 3:53 looks much more correct on WOLED. At some of these comparisons the image in QD OLED looks like over saturated mess. But I assume it's just calibration issue rather than problem with the technology.

It could also be the camera that blows one of the two out since it can't focus on both at the same time. But I definitely thought the same thing when I saw the moose image. HDTVTest (another KZbin channel covering this tech) did mention that the Samsung demo units were oversaturated. Saturation usually makes things "look" better to regular consumers, so that must be why. It didn't do the moose any favors though.

I have no doubt the new Samsung TVs look amazing but he made it seem like the current popular OLEDs like the LG C1 look like shit. I have a C1 and it looks mindblowing especially with Dolby Vision/HDR content. What I also like about the C1 is that I don't have any eye strain from it. The picture can be pretty bright with HDR in a pitch black room and I could watch all night and my eyes would be fine. I wonder how that is with the new Samsung TVs. Having a very bright picture might look impressive at first but if you watch it for hours your eyes might start to hurt.

8:51 I'm really curious for the performance during motion. During this shot I can see that the UFO has no visible trace. With 175 Hz one can assume that the picture would look good even without BFI. But there are still some games which are locked at 60 Hz. I hope that the monitor will have some BFI feature for this to allow motion clarity on those games as well.

I have a question here: What were all those delta E measurements for? Were they color accurate with less then 2 delta E or not? Or are we talking here about HDR performance and color space coverage?? Question is important, because if we do not have content to display extremely brigt or color intense objects on the screen - how could you tell the new Samsung OLED was better? Something tells me it was just oversaturatng some colors but not accurate. As for me - i want to see as much accurate colo reproduction as possible, as it was designed by the creator, not as some fancy AI wants. Thanks for saying it is a paid promotion btw. I think this is a Samsung display demo and given that at least Alienware is mentioned, multiple brands will be involved in turning the panels into products. Given the raw panel can do up to 90% of rec 2020, and 1000+ nit, if the vendors so choose, there should be SDR and DCI-P3 HDR calibred models available. But those will be much , much more expensive than the best buy floor TVs.

The potential issues go far wider than that - and Linus doesnt know any of them. Most HDR content today is mastered within DCI-P3, not the much larger bt2020. So you simply wont have content for a while, and the HDR standard uses bt2020 wrapping, meaning at one point you might have a swap over and trow out your old HDR content without the "standard" necessarily changing. (So the same thing where HDMI 2.0 is called 2.1... just on a different aspect (video containers)) So all the more saturated colors Linus saw - if they werent highlight details (very bright colors), they certainly arent in the most common HDR mastering standard yet. Or simply put, they shouldnt exist in the content. Its different with high brightness colors within DCI-P3 those run out of brightnes on WOLEDs, and get prepped up by the white subpixel. The issue in the video LTT posted is not that the content is "very bright", its that base colors (grass, gravel, ..) seem much brighter than on the LG OLED, even when Linus talked about feeding both 1000 nits content. That color difference there is inexplainable by anything other than Samsung running a brighter EOTF (gamma curve) intentionally going off standard. Because those colors should be displayed at 200nits to 400nits (closer to 200 nits) MAXIMUM, even while 1500 (or 1000) nits highlights were on screen. :) Also narrow cones on primary colors lead to increased color metamerism failure, this is where color science breakes, because human eyes' color matching function differs enough between individuals, that people dont agree on colors anymore. Which is an issue with quatum dots since Sony LCD days. But thats the most 'esoteric' out of the three, where color scientists would argue over how strongly it would affect populations. The other two issues are very real, and Linus hadnt any answers for them. He bought Samsung PR hookline and sinker. Everything was better color, because brighter - even though up to 300 nits LG should have color reproduction parity. So about that 1000nits neon grass next to the elch... That no HDR master would have if its was above DCI-P3 saturation.... And how about rewatching Lord of the rings in Vivid mode (because they werent mastered to bt2020, even if they used the bt2020 container... :) ).

From what linus is saying, there's two parts; one is just the brightness of the display compared to conventional ones, two is the relatively pure spectrum of its rgb components compared to rivals making it able to express pure colors more accurately.

That's sure sound optimistic, I wonder if burn-in will even be an issue with this type of panel (since burn-in occurs when an individual colour organic LED pixel burn out and faded, since only has blue and rely on Quntum Dot filter to create other colours, they might just never have a burn-in image but just become faded over time instead)

I'll start by saying that on the OLED i've had for a year, using as a desktop monitor, I'm not seeing any burn in yet, so I think it very likely any new processes samsung has to reduce burn in will make it less likely to be an issue, but - The only blue oled material and using quantum dot bit doesn't itself change anything. Burn in mainly becomes visible when subpixels are overused compared to the use of their overall pixel. Even with QD and "only" blue oled subpixels making up the pixel's lighting, each underlying sub-pixel is still mapped to an individual set of red and green QD elements (and just allowed to shine through for blue). So when the ESPN or CNN red logo is on the screen, only those blue light emitting, but red mapped subpixels are engaged, the remaining green and blue mapped subpixels are off. Leave that in place long enough, and those blue subpixels eventually begin to fade, while the blue subpixels that make up green and blue are still at full strength, and now when you got to show something other than solid red, suddenly, ya got burn in.

Do you realise even regular LEDs eventually get burn in? It's not a matter if it's possible or not (because it's going to happen), but if it would be less of an issue on these new QD-OLEDs by delaying burn-in too long that it doesn't matter.

Actually blue is the most prone to burn-in, since it requires more voltage, but there are gains of efficiency to make up for that.

I watched this video on three different monitors/displays and LG looked better to me every time. The Samsung seems to artificially boost the colours? They don't look natural anymore but almost surreal. Like your first impression is "wow, what a nice red colour" but thinking twice makes you realize that red roses don't actually look *this* red in nature.

It is so exciting to see this tech finally being applied. I worked on quantum dot down-conversion tech a few years ago. When I left the project they were still working on green emitters (red was already figured out). I would guess that will be coming relatively soon

@@chaomatic5328 Actually quantum physics! Quantum dots flouresce (absorb and reemit light at a different wavelength) under UV (blue here) light. The quantum dots are about on the same length scale as the wavelengths of visible light, so they act like tiny electron resonator cavities and strongly prefer to emit certain wavelenghts (colors). They can create insanely brilliant colors assuming you can manufacture them with uniform size.

I have a feeling while being technically objectively better, this might suffer the same problem as previous large leaps in TV tech in that most people just think cooler, bluer displays look better, even if it's not accurate. I have to say that in the side-by-side shots, I preferred the "normal" OLED because the QDOLED look OVER saturated and kinda.. fake. And yes, I realize I'm comparing on my own display, but it seems like that would only make it more severe in person.

The lack of color standards (or the use of them) makes these next gen screens useless. Their function is basically an oversaturation slider, because lots of content is still made for sRGB from the CRT days. Though nowadays you'll find some games looking pretty washed out compared in sRGB which means that they are aiming for some undefined larger color space.

Thats just not the case as wOled had inherent color bias through the subpixel disposition.. QDots allow to exactly tune light wavelenght to reference colors with maximum efficiency.

As long as display is technically capable, you can always tweak its color profile to your liking. And since QD-OLED features true RGB pattern, it will be much easier to tune than OLED

I can see the brightness increase and outdoor scenes where it's supposed to be sunny looks great. But from a aesthetic standpoint i kind of like how the WOLED scenes look more often than the QD OLED scenes. I feel like in some of them the brightness washed out some of the details you see in the darker OLED.

@@Clobercow1 I had a Philips CRT monitor capable of 200hz at 800x600. It's max resolution was fhd+ at 75hz however. But choosing the max res meant I couldn't game on it. Bare in mind this was 20 years ago so... I just don't remember the model.. Philips pq271w or something like that. I remember the 27 and the "w" but I can't for the life of the remember it correctly.

It's always a good idea to wait for independent reviews and get your info from multiple sources no matter what device you plan on buying. I just think your comment on "other people who weren't flown out" is a bit irrelevant here. This is NOT a review of any product. It's a showcase paid for by samsung themselves and it's meant to explain the way the tech works and tell us why we should be excited for it. I'm sure Linus will also make an independent review once an actual consumer ready product is released and it will not be affected by him being flown out in any way.

Held out from buying a 4K OLED during Black Friday/Cyber Monday because I read about these QD-OLED TVs coming out. However, the rumor is that they (Samsung & Sony) are going to charge $5k for the 65” models, which means I’ll be sticking with my 1080P Panasonic plasma TV for a while longer.

Better buy LG Oled i have it from 2 years and its amazing. LG support Dolby Vision which is much better than normal HDR (Samsung dont have Dolby Vision license) . I have Samsung S21 Ultra the best amoled screen Samsung can make but the bigger oleds form them for example on a laptop are not that impressive , i prefer the LG IPS screen on Alienware 34 for desktop use. I try some games on the LG Oled TV but still prefer the monitor, for me Oled is good only for Movies and for Phones.

@@RayzaNC from a large part it was a joke indeed. On the other hand, people, myself included, tend to forget that the marvelous image they see in new TV ads is displayed right there on their old TVs. So for a second there I too was admiring how much better the image looks on the QD OLED and forgot it was displayed on my obsolete 2yo OLED. I am sure that seeing the new TV live must be impressive and I am looking forward to it. I may even buy a QD OLED TV next year, who knows. But right now it was partly a joke and partly a tiny bit of reminder that the grass is always greener on the other side.

I’m not convinced QD OLED is the true future. Just like all modern oled displays it’s still prone to burn in. Burn in is an inherent flaw of OLED technology and will always be an issue. Micro-LED is 100% the future. Micro-LED will have no risk of burn-in and will have perfect blacks. The same technology in these panels can 100% be applied to Micro-LED.

It depends on how far in the future you’re talking about. QD-OLED is something we can have in the near future and it blows current LG OLED televisions out of the water (as shown in this video). MicroLED is prohibitively expensive and we don’t know how long it’ll be until it is reasonably consumer-ready. Like not just price- will it be in a reasonable form factor or will be be comically unreasonable like The Wall ? And even in this video it’s it differentiates between the way lighting (and therefore color saturation) is done due to quantum dots. Will consumer-ready MicroLED displays be able to display colors as well as QD-OLED?

Man I am so happy with my LG C1 65” it will take years for something to convince me to change my mind. The TV is perfect for my dark room setup, I wouldn’t want more brightness even if it was knocking at my door lol. It’s good that Samsung is trying though 👍🏼
