IR Packs For Violin and Cello? 3 sigma Audio Review (Pt 1 Violin)

If you are a violin, viola, or cello player in 2023, and you are serious about getting the best tone from your pickup odds are you already using IRs. The 3 Sigma Audio packs are the only commercial 3rd party IR library out there on the market, for bowed string players, but how easy are they to use? and how do they sound?

Very nice comparison of the options! I hope string players increasingly see the value in using IRs, so that digital audio companies see value in procuring higher quality instruments for sampling. I've been using IRs for years, through some (relatively) clunky devices, but now there's no reason for a live musician to not explore this processing. Particularly for players using in ear monitors, the enjoyment that can be had playing electrics with IR is such a huge difference. You can sound better to yourself, which is more fun, and when you're having fun, you play better. IR can also reduce the need for electric players, in particular, to use less compression, eq, and reverb. Based on my observations as electric player and sound engineer, IR convolution applies all 3 of these processes in a more organic form, effectively getting the better sonic product by going directly to the intent of the processing. This is in contrast to the old way of approximating acoustic tone via older processes, which could only get you so far. Excess reverb, multi-band compression, aggressive eq notching, all have been tried, but IR fixes it easily. I maintain that IR processing was the quantum leap for electric string players. Nothing else has ever made nearly as big a difference in my tone and electric rig.

Interesting to see the graphical frequency response of the different IR lengths in the IR loader and the obvious lack of bass shaping below 1024.

Hey Florian. It actually is a positive review not sure what you mean by Clickbait but, I think it’s a great title… actually borrowed it from Josh Scott JHS pedals which is one of the best channels on KZbin.
