Interesting scenario and great episode - thanks. The system that Pete Phillipps uses (a version of) - and that you are about to re-invent - is called the Swiss System, and is commonly used in chess tournaments. It's very suitable for ASL tournaments too, as no-one gets eliminated and it also allows players to agree a draw if they wish, which of course a straight knock-out does not. I can't see a way to win as the Americans. I'd play it as either side as it looks interesting but it needs some work on balance.
