I wonder why chess clocks aren't used more in ASL tournaments. At very least could be used when adjudicating incomplete game as in one side took 3 times as long.
@aslscenarioarchive12273 күн бұрын
They're quite divisive. We had a chat about this and I keep threatening Martin that we'll play with clocks one day. We're both quick players so it's not like we need them, but there's definitely some times where it's not clear whose "thinking time" you're on, so one needs to be careful about this. Also, defenders generally need more time on setup and attackers need more time on their turns so it's tricky to know whether it's fair to split the available time in half.

Another very nice episode guys. As far as the whole CE vs defensive fire debate I recommend Jim Bishops article, Mechanics Of Bounding First Fire-What Is And What Should Be. It, like all of Jim's articles is worth a read. The bottom line is that there appears to be no definitive rules (and QA) interpretation of sequencing. Jim offers his own way of playing which aligns with my own approach. Your mileage may vary, which it obviously does, as Dave's option to let the AFV shoot without a def fire option from the defending infantry is the opposite of mine. Keep them coming chaps.

One thing I don't understand about the KPA setup. The KPA set up second on board 50 at level ≥ three. In particular they are allowed to set up in hexes R5, R6 and S6. If I saw that American setup on the hill I would be very, very tempted to set up two and possibly three 6-2-8s with LMGs in those hexes. They would deny concealment to much of the American setup in that saddle and would be in position to Prep fire into their backs. R6 in combination with P5 would encircle Q6. The KPA might lose a squad or two but they should easily cause much more damage. If you are more risk-averse you might use 4-4-7s as your anvil force. But with KPA units on the woody knoll, I don't think the Americans can set up units in the Q6 saddle without expecting to lose them to a man.
@mybackup8874Ай бұрын
In addition to Kindling and WP, fires can also be started by RCL backblast [C12.4] and by getting the trucks set on fire. If you drive the trucks around in the U7-U9 area, performing OVRs, the KPA may decide to fire on them and set them ablaze. If they are only wrecked, fire on the wrecks with BAZ and/or RCL and/or MTR and/or IFT FP to set the wreck ablaze. You might consider putting a second-line halfsquad in the trucks as passengers. As a UUV the trucks alone do not prevent rout and do not prevent fire out of the hex, but with a Passenger they will be real irritants to the KPA in those three woods hexes.

This is what I like to call a "trick" scenario. In a trick scenario usually one side has to recognize that there is something unusual it has to do. Here the trick is flaming everything. Several other of the FW scenarios are what I would call "trick" scenarios. In Red Devils, firelanes. In Human Bullets, slow-walk the armor convoy and rush the infantry forward; fire at "empty" hexes to try to find HIP ambushers and break the convoy, although this is more to give the convoy and the 50mm MTRs something to do. In Centurions, Reverse, the hey-diddle-diddle-straight-up-the-middle strategy might not be the best. For "trick" scenarios the playing record often does not accurately reflect the true balance of play when the trick is recognized.
@aslscenarioarchive1227Ай бұрын
Agreed on all points. It's fun if players discover the trick over multiple playings, but I think that if the scenario trick is revealed (if indeed the trick is all that's needed) then it's a lot less enjoyable.
@mybackup8874Ай бұрын
@@aslscenarioarchive1227 To be clear I think the "trick" needs to be discovered for the first playing. These are not things that cause an automatic win but if missed lead to a likely loss. Here if the Americans do not think about starting fires, it is likely the KPA will steam-roll the Americans. That in turn leads to the scenario being dismissed as a dog and never played again. It's a risky scenario design. At the same time what I call a "trick" is just using the standard rules. So is needing to put down SMOKE a "trick" or just normal play? There's a fine line, and in some sense it's unfair to call it a "trick" when it's just using the rules. In this case there is a clue in the extra dry EC. But if a fair number of players don't pick up what the scenario designer is putting down, the record of general play for the scenario will be unbalanced.
@mybackup8874Ай бұрын
Regarding the setup for "Hey, That Ain't a ROK," there is something amiss. The second American group, L & M Companies, sets up on/between hexrows H & O on hexes ≥ 9 on board 50 and ≤ 2 on board 37. From what I can tell there is no one from that group in that area. The area is directly south of the KPA units on the hill along the road. Ah, I understand what you did. You marked out the area ≥ 9 and ≤ 2 across the whole width of the board and did not limit it to between hexrows H & O. You also did not set up ≤ 1 MMC per hex for this group. This error of course helps the Americans a lot, but that is besides the point.
@mybackup8874Ай бұрын
You surprised me because I was thinking the Americans would be crushed if they didn't know about flaming everything. But between how the Americans caught on quickly and the setup errors for L & M Co.s, it went the opposite way from what I expected. Anyway, try setting up Co.s L & M in the right place, and see if it plays better.

Two quick comments about the general video. First for some reason the video is horizontally flipped, either in one of the cameras or the entire video. When the four ASLSK products are waved on screen the text is reversed. Second whatever conferencing software you are using insists on flashing a green rectangle around whoever is speaking. I would not be entirely opposed to turning that feature off if possible. I find it distracting.

Thanks - yep, we're simply recording a video chat on discord. I will see what I can do about a better video capture. There's no way I can see to disable the green border flashing, without masking it in premier pro each time, but leave it with me!

Without checking I'm pretty sure the American setup is wrong. The vehicles and infantry on the bottom board should be set-up on the road between the command group and main body.

Your discussion on when to resign highlights my general frustration with standard scenarios. As you point out, there are many situations such as bad rolls or misunderstood rules and/or victory conditions that can make a win impossible and then what can you do but resign? I would very much favor some sort of campaign game type of rule additions that would offer options such as a fighting withdrawal (to allow a troop buildup in a subsequent scenario?), a blocking action (to allow a troop buildup in a subsequent scenario via a purchase mechanic?), or something to give you more of a strategic perspective and options. For example, in ASL Solitaire the SASL campaign rules address the question of whether or not you continue to press home your attack or save your troops to fight another day. Also, you have an unpredictable element in SASL in the form of RE (Random Events) that can have a major impact on what you do next and makes it worth, in my opinion, continuing the fight or falling back and withdrawing-the RE's can save your bacon (or cook it). I realize scenarios are specifically designed to be short and balanced so you can play them in an afternoon, but in so doing they I think they often really sacrifice the bigger picture perspective and realism. Campaign games (like those in Red Barricades) gives you strategic options and you need to think beyond just the current conflict. I just find that much more interesting since if you are brought low on one day’s conflict, you always have the next day to try to recover.
@StewsReplayАй бұрын
Some CG's are weak AF, since the last day you know you can throw your units away that you've been averse to doing during the CG....making it ONE LONG typical Scenario. There should be daily objectives/ CVP/Territory/etc. that maybe give you the option of gaining more CPP to bolster your troops as a bonus for obtaining the Daily Objectives. Most CG's seem to be just miniature battles using Counters instead.

Thanks for playing this one. It's one of my favorites. I played it vs Bob Bendis in an ASLOK championship finals game. Bob insisted on playing this one, even though he was well aware that I am the designer. In the face of his insistence, I allowed him choice of sides. He took the Germans, and the game was a great game. Bob was his usually extremely aggressive style of play. It worked really well for him to get to the end game very early. I had several ATG ambushes set up with sneaky LOS's to bypass locations and it paid off a bit with masked side shots on King Tigers. I got one, but missed another with several ROF hull hits on a side turret shot at a HD tank. If I had gotten that Tiger, I think he would've been really behind in this one. I noticed that almost everyone took the T34/85's in your games. I chose the IS's as I wanted to give the King Tigers something to think about. The mobility of the T34's is great, but almost completely nullified by the late was German plethora of LATW and the flank protecting close terrain making it almost impossible to use the T34's greatest assets, their tracks, to great effect here. That ASLOK final game came down to a 9-2 with the .50 holding down the rowhouse VC building. Bob charged the defenders with everything he had left and after the smoke cleared he had a squad and a leader left able to advance in to CC. My stalwart fellows relief at their smoking HMG throwing back a last gasp CC attempt, held their breath as Bob's NAZI's, escaping the -1 in my favor Ambush dr, needed a '4' for the win. One of his dice stopped on a '1' the other spun wildly for what seemed an eternity until finally tipping over and resting on a '4', reducing a defending squad but not enough for the win, with my Soviets breathed a hug sigh of relief.

Yes, that last snakeyes was an IFT roll that shot dead the CE crew of his T34/85, at which point Jim had no tanks left and decided to resign. Great work gents! I’m looking forward to “Hey, That Ain’t a ROK!” You two have played a Korean scenario (Commander for a Day). It’s an SP/Rally Point offering in addition to the Fight for Seoul scenario. I find it amusing that some people would say, if one suggests Russian/American and light woods, “No way! That’s not historical!” But when one suggests a North Korean/US, their reply is “oh, that looks interesting!” I think some people are turned off a bit by Korea scenarios because of the fiddly rule about HEAT rounds, and the preponderance of night scenarios. The latter is, of course, unavoidable.

I try to play any scenario without really looking at or hearing what others have done- personally I find it is really hard to play someone others game and that will happen to me if read too much into it beforehand. What I like to do is to look at articles and AARs after I've played a game too see how my game compares to that, I find I personally that I am learing more that way. So it is brave experiment but I would not be comfortable doing it personally. Regarting the "dirty" or "clever" or unforeseen" tricks that give you a sure win thing - I am all for doing whatever is needed to get an advantage. If the scenario is playtested so that there is a trick you can do it to break it is bad desing or playtest, not bad sportmanship. After all where do you draw the line? Play the best you can, if the scenario sucks move forward as there will be a next one that will proprably be much better.

I don't think this "hold one building" strategy is a scenario breaker. It's just an option. At least, this one playing certainly doesn't prove that it's an unbeatable strategy. There was plenty of bad luck for the Germans here from what I could see, and some questionable decisions, like putting the 10-2 stack where a 152 could hit it easily.
@StewsReplay3 ай бұрын
It’s not a breaker but just boils the scenario down to just that…the VC can just state defend building X…instead of a piecemeal “defense’ “Steamrolling” the Russians

Hey Guys! Good to see IR back. Estonian Interlude: I lost as well to Simon Taylor. But it was very, very close. It would have been a lot less close if Simon hadn't run back to the building as quickly as he did. Fish in a Barrel: It's ok if you catch on to the trick...if you don't, you're doomed. Simon didn't. He lost all four tanks by turn 2 and we stopped there. BTW, the German TD is a Rhino (Nashorn). Both questionable choices, imho, for a tournament as there was nothing straightforward about either one. Same goes for Death from Above. Martin's victory was against me in Crossing the Issel. He played quite well. I don't think I did. His win was very well deserved. Overall, Double One was a really good time!

I think, instead of writing the support weapons down on the hip units or on the units and then having the support weapons hip. I think the system should instead use the cloak, a sort of cloaking counter for the support weapons whereas you might start a scenario with like a conceal encounters why don’t you start a scenario with Say you know if you got five support weapons, five cloaking support weapon, encounters or cloaking sport weapon, encounters, and only half of those actually represent the sport weapons. It’ll be easier to keep track of you could just look at under the cloak encounter to say on real or fake or whatever and that way you can easily check instead of having a look at a piece of paper that you gotta write down, you simply have a counter, I’m not a big fan of more clutter, but I don’t think an extra counters would be that big deal but it would allow players to give us slightly more fog of war to have a dummy support weapon then not

He said MMP is worried about people freely distributing them. However, the magazines they come in _are_ available as pdfs and it would seem no such concern exists.
