I have PART of a Moody and Sankey Hymn book in my posession, beautiful, very heart felt singing by Ira Sankey who is a 5th Cousin to me.

There were ninety and nine that safely lay In the shelter of the fold; But one was out on the hills away, Far off from the gates of gold. Away on the mountains wild and bare; Away from the tender Shepherd’s care. “Lord, Thou hast here Thy ninety and nine; Are they not enough for Thee?” But the Shepherd made answer: “This of Mine Has wandered away from Me. And although the road be rough and steep, I go to the desert to find My sheep.”

Amazing, I never thought there was a recording of this song made by the song writer himself. The song describes all Christians. We are the one sheep that went missing from the Shepherd's care. We are the one that got lost, then found and rescued by the Shepherd. All praises be to God!!!

I recall my late father singing many songs from the Sacred Songs & Solos song book. This brings back memories...

Sankey was a Civil War veteran. It is said that he helped support Fanny Crosby in her later years -- a true Christian gentleman.

Is Moody singing with Sankey?

Moody could literally not carry a tune, nor tell one from another, but he could tell their effect, and be personally moved by them.

Jason Bourne oh ok! I thought maybe it was Sankey or maybe even Moody! Thanks!😁

Sankey always accompanied himself. I have touched the keys of one of the little portable reed organs he used. I realize this is a piano, but it is surely the singer himself playing it.

Sankey was a pretty ordinary singer.

Mizzy Roro, I just read in Fanny Crosby - The Hymn Writer (By Bernard Ruffin) this voice had worsened considerably by the time he was recorded, because of all the singing he did at Moody's events (with an untrained voice, and no microphones to amplify the sound I'm guessing he oversang and wore out his voice). I don't know how his voice in its prime would compare to today's most talented singers, but his baritone voice was a sensation in his time.

You also have to understand that this was made before microphones were invented. In order for the needle to cut the groove you had to sing really loud into the horn. That's why people always sounded like they were yelling on these old records.

@@johnsmith6586 And even apart from recordings, you had to sing loud enough for the back row to hear you. It wasn't until Bing Crosby came along in the 1930's that people started to truly make use of the microphone as to create a new style of singing.
