Ira, wow, what an amazing public figure -- I have so much respect for his work. "This American Life" is hands down some of the best radio journalism in production. I hope he becomes more vocal about his atheism over time, perhaps even on his show.

"You're an atheist... how'd that happen"? Atheism doesn't "happen"; we start out atheist. It's a default position derived from the null hypothesis which generally means it's logical to assume a thing doesn't exist until persuaded that it does. Until then we withhold belief. Belief (what ever it may happen to be) is what can be said to "happen" when we are so persuaded.

Chariots of the Gods! I was right there with Ira, I was reading all kinds of stuff like that in my early teens as well trying to get a handle on this whole GOD thing that made no sense to me. Eventually I figured out that all those stories were just made up and they didn't need explanations. But I gotta say, Ira Glass is another perfect example of the modern atheist. Atheist just are - we have the basically the same moral codes but those codes are based on logic and reason and not fear of punishment or promise of reward. We don't need a god, god serves no purpose other than for a good story. But Ira is the exemption to the rule in some ways, he is much more interesting. Atheist are a lot less colorful because we don't have all that flashy god craziness to spice things up, we just live our lives best we can and try harder than most to leave a positive impression on this world because we know this world and this life is the only one we are going to get so we need to make this one count.

lol I don't think the current pope believes in god! Suppose there comes a point where they just see their position as a service to the people to guiding them into being good people. You can't have a good god that turns around and punishes people. Makes no sense.

I always found it weird that people didn't become atheist. Like who actually ever really believed any of that nonsense? That's what I find mystifying, and I grew up with a lot of religious education. I just never really bought it. Even as a older kid it all seemed very absurd to me.

You're an atheist. How'd that happen? All kids are born atheists until religion is imposed on them. We SHOULD instead be asking: "You're a Christian/Jew/Muslim. How'd that happen?"

You don"t remember your parents reaction to you announcing you are an atheist? You say your parents don't care that you are an atheist but just wanted you to get a hebrew eduction because they didn't get a Jewish education? That doesn't add up either. If you are a Jew whether or not you believe in that "god" or not then Judaism it is not protected as a religion?

Lots of people have made the argument that Reform Judaism is agnostic already. It's unlikely they'd be scandalized by atheism.
