Martin McGartland (born 30 January 1970) is a former British informer who infiltrated the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) in 1989 to pass information to RUC Special Branch.
When he was exposed as an informer in 1991 he was abducted by the IRA, but escaped and was resettled in England. His identity became publicly known after a minor court case. He was later shot six times by a gunman, but recovered from the injuries. He has written two books about his life, Fifty Dead Men Walking: The Terrifying True Story of a Secret Agent Inside the IRA and Dead Man Running.

If a tout is the lowest form of life, then under what category do you put the men who abducted Louth farmer Thomas Oliver in February 1991- he had been shot EIGHT times in the head by the IRA; he left behind a young family. What was his "crime"? He alerted the Gardaí to a Provo arms cache on his land😢

This is what An Poblacht, the PIRA’s newspaper, had to say about the murder: ‘IRA EXECUTES INFORMER The IRA has a duty to protect its organisation, its volunteers and the back-up provided by its supporters. Tom Oliver’s death was due to his willingness to act as an agent for the Dublin Government’s Special Branch.’ So, does this mean that the PIRA were traitors to their own country? They are going against their own percieved “government”, not very patriotic if you ask me 😂😂😂

The effects of informants within the IRA made little difference. The IRA was organized in such a way that one cell at times knew nothing about what another was doing. The British have talked this up but as Peter Hitchens has rightly said the Good Friday Agreement is a surrender to the IRA. The IRA got the British army off the streets and out of NI, they got their prisoners released and the Royal Ulster Constabulary's name and uniforms changed and made sure it was no longer a primarily Protestant force what did the IRA give up in comparison? Not much. Supposedly they turned in their weapons but no one even knows for sure how many overall. Thankfully those days are over but no one should be under the illusion the British defeated the IRA when British Cabinet documents recently declassified say the exact opposite. Wisely, both sides ended the violence. The vast majority of informants were murdered by the IRA.

From what I understand, the creator of this channel grew up during, and at the geographical heart, of the Troubles. Given his technical savvy and the origination dates of the footage posted, I'm assuming he grew up in or around Belfast during the 1980's, which in and of itself doesn't indicate any particular leanings or bias, and, so far as I can tell, neither do his choice in videos (essentially any relevant footage he can get his hands on). Which is I'm surprised with what I see in this video - the "red right hand" of the Ulster Volunteer Force appears in the upper right hand corner of the screen throughout this video as a sort of quasi water mark, or stamp if you will. If the hand was part of the original video - meaning he received and/or procured the footage with the hand already inserted - then case closed. Aside from technical remastering, I fully support posting the footage, unedited. However, if he placed the UVF symbol, it would be a bizarre admission not repeated during his otherwise noble endevours toward the preservation of modern history. In fact, inserting the image would be such an anomaly that, were I to venture an explanation, I'd posit the former.

I did grow in Belfast and yes the 80's was my decade. Not as old as some of you wiser guys on here but I try :) When I started uploading I wanted a symbol that was universally recognized as belonging to all sides. The red hand is not just a loyalist symbol hence my use of it. I found though many on both sides assumed it to be loyalist so I changed to my current logo. Many thanks for your comment 👍

I suppose he couldn't be really called a Tout, as he wasn't a member of the IRA until he was forced to join by the British Security Services. So infact he was a British Agent, but treated as a Tout by his British handlers, because he was a common thief. A Tout is someone that is turned by British forces that were already a member of the Organisation.

Did his information cause harm to the IRA ? if the answer is yes then he was a tout pure & simple, only if a common theif managed to get introduced to Brian Gillan who ran active service units, sort of goes to prove we're not talking mensa members are we, he had his first unit arrested before the second he is no different to scap aka steak knife or the many known others , A rats a rat's a fucking rat who deserves all he gets- this one got paid , & the brits didn't give a fuck about him & he gave no fucks about the cause only the money paid to him by the brits !

He wasn't "forced" to join the IRA... his handlers told him he'd earn more if he joined and informed them prior to any operations starting. They said the higher you go, the more £ was forthcoming.

I did indeed , I take it you've no understanding of that symbol other than Loyalism?
@ATLmodK
@ATLmodK 3 ай бұрын
The legend of the red hand predates the English invasion of Ulster and is meant to apply to all people of Ulster, not just the Loyalists. However, this is an older documentary and ATL has said he removed it on subsequent documentaries because the modern symbolism caused many viewers distress
@michaellavery4899
@michaellavery4899 3 ай бұрын
To my knowledge there are many interpretations of the symbol. None of them peaceful and in modern times a symbol of loyalist domination of the six counties of NI although it has been claimed to represent the nine counties of the island.
@ATroubledLand
@ATroubledLand 3 ай бұрын
Thats why I got shot of it years ago. It was being seen as a solely Loyalist symbol and therefore a Loyalist channel, which it is not.
@michaellavery4899
@michaellavery4899 3 ай бұрын
@@ATroubledLand You know the historical significance of the symbol but many who display it, wear it to show political or religious preference. I would ask anybody who claimed to wear such a symbol in reference to less well known beliefs or meanings, if they displayed any other historical emblems, but on the whole they wouldn't. They would only wear the more common symbols to project their affiliations. Removal of the symbol will help to get your educational videos out to a wider audience and I hope you go on to educate people about truth and the reality of history of Ireland.
