@david hefner As long as China does not start a war, the US will not. China is not going to start a war so the military dimension is rather simple: peace with the USA will prevail. Left is economic issues. Before the trade war, China did not know the magnitude of damage the US can do . Now, China knows that the consequence of a trade war is endurable, so it is more confident and acts more boldly on its economic interests.

India's problem is similar to most Asian countries, wealthy elite class extreme poverty low class with not much middle class. That is what most countries face including the USA, progressive politions, companies who want too eliminate a large section of middle class citizens. This has been an ongoing threat here in US for 30+ yrs. China realizes this in their country and the negative consequences of the middle/lower class teaming up an uprising to the CCP/PLA. America with Trump is also recognizing the challenges with the Democrats who are now the hard left, Reds. Our founders such as Andrew Jackson warned us this was possible: enemies from within may kill America before the enemies outside. We'll see.

Actually, why does everyone talking about the rivalry between India and China? Is it necessary? To put some simple perspective, I don't think that China will want to occupy/attack India, and India definitely will not be able to physically invade China (right now). It makes more sense for the 2 giants in Asia to work together, cooperate together. China and India may have had some border disputes that hasn't been solved, but in the grand scheme of things, will China want India to go down the toilet? No! In fact, it is in China's interest that India is peaceful, prosperous and stable. Why? Because India will become China's largest and most important trading partner soon! It is so clear! India has a 1.4B population, China has a 1.5B population, together, India and China can control more than 35% of the world's economy and GDP output! It is possible! I can't wait for the day where India and China economies are the no.1 and no.2 in the world! These 2 are the world's oldest civilizations and cultures on planet Earth. From a Singaporean's perspective, I see many exciting and happy developments if India and China work together and trust each other. South-Asia will be prosperous, South-East Asia (Where I am at) will be prosperous and even the Middle-East will also be prosperous if everyone can work together..... Am I the only one who is excited to see this possibility? When I see this, I think the nations that will lose out, are USA and Europe. Now, it makes sense that these countries will try to meddle and muddle things up, isn't it? If you can't join them, disrupt them!

Agreed. the high mountain of Himalayas is a natural boundary between india and China, who neither be able to nor be interested to conquer each other. current border disputes are historical issues from colonial times created and left by the British who also made countless problems all over the world, including Palestinian and Israel issues. @Sensei Hooplah thanks for the explanations of historical context of the division in the india subcontinent. another hot issue left by the British colonial powers. I think leaders have to take tough measures to overcome difficulties from domestic nationalism and radical religious minds, anyway, geopolitical games won't bring prosperity. only economic growth and stability is in everyone's favor. and to my limited knowledge about south asia and the religious system here, if Muslims and Hindus can live together in india, there must be a way for people in India and Pakistan to solve the post colonial issues. it's only a wish though, and sadly, among the three neighboring countries, geopolitical games will keep on going, as all leaders need nationalism to get support and votes.

SG, Superb synopses of the region and especially ramifications for India. Modi and India should have known the dark history of US and its relationship with its close allies. Iran during Shah, Afghanistan after Russian left, Iraq when Saddam was US satellite, Pakistan which was always in US pocket. US betrayed all, especially in time of need. India will pay very high price, especially when the rising power, China is its neighbour and sitting at the border. US is “saat samunder paar.”

No. It's because India's leadership lacked sense of own (India's) interests and was helping a distant alien that is only concerned about its well being and no others'. India had opportunity to invest in the IPI gas pipeline but it chose not to. India also had opportunity to invest in Iran petroleum and again it chose to play politics to appease a distant alien. I only wish that China had taken over the Chabahar Port early on when India turned it into a one-year, one-block type of project. That truly would have knee-capped India altogether. If China comes up now and says she's prepared to honor every trade that is done in RMB without any reservations or politics, some will turn into midgets overnight.

Thanks for a, great resumé of the situation. As an outsider, but admirer of Indian Culture, it leaves me with a few questions. 1 - Why did India give up its neutral position as an independent nation? Why take part in a boycott (a unfair one as well) against Iran when this is the only strategic source of oil not controlled by the US. Even after having suffered from an American boycott oneself (over nuclear weapons). Besides US presence in Afghanistan is as much directed against India as China and Iran. Who gave Pakistan (biggest terrorist state) her nuclear and cruise missile technology? The USA. And who is denying Iran, a more civilized state than Pakistan the same? The USA. And who is it, that pitched Iraq in a war of attrition against Iran? The USA. And who is that assacinated their democratically elected president, Mossadeq? The USA. How come this country is considered a "human rights" defender? Is this really the Indian perspective? 2 - Why does India seem uninterested in resolving her issues with China when times are favorable? If you look ahead USA power is waning. Not only is the financial system in deep trouble, the country is deeply divided. China is quickly developing the Asian region to become less dependent on the west and is already the regional economic superpower, and becoming the worlds no 1 economic super power. What does India hope to gain by seeking conflict with China? It beats me. I do not want to believe, they hope to profit from a nuclear war between China and the USA. So what is it? 3 - Why did Iran sign this treaty at a moment it is clear Trump lost the election? Why not wait for Biden to pick up where Obama left off. Why not wait before committing for 25 years? Would this not be because they realize USA is their long term adversary? But would Iran not be interested in making deals with India as well? They can use all the help they can get. So if India is excluded, is this not their own making for betraying trust with Iran and antagonizing China? Is what Iran and China are doing not perfectly predictable and should it be no surprise at all? Is it not India who chooses to be excluded? 4 - Why criticize Iran's human rights? You can talk about Iran's lack of Human rights, but do you really like the Arab oil states better? And do you think an economic boycott that kills tens maybe hundreds of thousands of people is not a far greater human rights violation? So why condemn one and participate in the other? When it comes to human rights, is not putting billions in poverty across the world by far the biggest crime? Is this not an ongoing daily suffering? Is all this talk about individual suffering not a clever but devious way to distract attention from this far greater suffering? Did China not lift 800.000.000 people from poverty in one decade. So why is all attention directed at hanging a few thousand mostly criminals? Why is selective individual well-being more important than that of the masses? So why is China the arch-enemy of India? They long stopped being communist, they are the same pragmatic centrally ruled country they were for much of their history. And other East Asian countries are in practice ruled by one party as well. 5 - And after you have explained it so well, was this really a surprise? It seems only logical that two countries who are facing American aggression start to align and combine strength. What really makes me wonder is, why India did not join in, but rather sides with Pakistan's strongest backer? Why not welcome Iran in Brics and join the economic cooperation. The West only wants to divide nations to keep them subservient. What does India hope to win by undermining Iran and China? To me it seems that China is really good at creating long term alliances, and India is really good at creating long term animosity and at being a rather opportunistic unreliable partner. Henry Kissinger called India totally unreliable. European countries do not consider India reliable. China does not consider India reliable. Iran does not consider India reliable. They all think India is a great civilization, but they do not consider their leaders reliable. And that seems a problem to me. The Chinese have a real good long term memory, and they build on trust. They honor who helped them and remember who betrayed them. If India thinks that switching sides after the USA has collapsed is a good idea, they do not understand the difference between the USA and China. If they want to resolve territorial disputes and show allegiance, now is the time! China is a tough negotiator, but for sake of long term relations they want others to proper as well. And as pragmatists they are even willing to renegotiate deals on more favorable terms as recently with Malaysia. That is what makes the Chinese system work: It is dependable. They want to build on long term relationships. You can not build long term relationships on exploitation. That is why Western Empires collapse after a century and not after thousands of years. That is why African countries favor the Chinese over the Europeans. The Chinese are willing to bring industry to Africa, Europe only wants them to harvest resources. The poorer, the better. It is win-win thinking vs zero-sum-game-thinking. I recently saw a discussion about the future of Asian countries. And one speaker remarked that Indians seem to have their own view that is always different from the rest. Even if this is a superior view, I think you have a problem when the rest is acting on a more common view.

Exactly my thought. As someone from Africa we see the Chinese and Indians a brothers, irrespective of the boarder issues I think they should settle their differences and work together. The Anglo saxons are good at divide and rule, so my thoughts is that all Asia countries including Japan should work together to see to the rise of Asia in the global stage.

@Jurrat Amoz23 a relation of roti beti is based on illogical mythical stories of ramayan where a character named sita said to belonged to nepal was married to ram in India isn't it senseless..well am not against or behalf of any religion use I am a non-religious person so for me we are humans and nothings exisit beyond humanity no religion no races and to be fact of you do some survey about ram and sita or ayodhdhya stories even philipines, Indonesian claims that the ram sita was born in their region....

China has been playing her politics very cleverly in 2 decades. First, improved its economy to the unbelievable level. Then started to help third world countries without putting any political conditions as USA and went do. Now China has started to isolate american lapdog India with a great success. Last but not least China is going to replace USA as the next Superpower in the world.

India indeed paid dearly for not being a truly independent country. When a country (India) goes against its own national interests in order to appease a crazy master (USA), it will definitely bode well. A country the size and history of India has absolutely no reason to submit to wishes of western hegemony. Great (but tragic) lesson learned in the case of relationship with Iran.
