Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023).

The President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, said that “as independent nations increasingly align themselves towards cooperation and convergence, certain powers are attempting to incite conflicts in different regions.”
Speaking at the High-level week of the General-Assembly today (19 Set), Raisi continued “Employing a cold war mentality, they strive to reconstitute blocks on a global scale. This regressive endeavor poses a significant threat to the security and prosperity of nations.”
Raisi said that “the Islamic Republic of Iran's staunchly maintains that the formation of new East West divide should not be permitted to take shape.”
According to him, “making trade corridors unsafe. diminishing countries from allies to dependents, stifling the economic progress of sovereign nations and fomenting proxy wars across Asia and Europe are all elements of this sinister chain.”
The Iranian President continued, “Ironically, these actions are put forth in the name of defending democracy. However, the global community, including nations in West Asia, have discerned the true essence of Western democracy. An appellation that all too often is a codename for coup d’etat, occupations and ongoing wars.
Referring to the Iranian nuclear agreement, Raisi said, “The United States of America must explain transparently and demonstrate in a verifiable fashion that it does wish to reach a proper conclusion and show its commitment and choose a path - either JCPOA or not.”
The President added, “The European countries, by the same token, who ignore UN Security Council resolution 2231 and their commitments within the framework of the JCPOA, they will ultimately lose on this path. Rest assured that nuclear weapons have no place in the defense and military doctrine of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Many of those killed during this time were subjected to torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in the process."[36] The killings have been described as a political purge without precedent in modern Iranian history, both in terms of scope and coverup.[37] However, the exact number of prisoners executed remains a point of contention. Amnesty International, after interviewing dozens of relatives, puts the number in thousands;[38] and then-Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini's deputy, Hussein-Ali Montazeri put the number between 2,800 and 3,800 in his memoirs,[39] but an alternative estimation suggests that the number exceeded 30,000.[40] Because of the large number, prisoners were loaded into forklift trucks in groups of six and hanged from cranes in half-hour intervals.[41][better source needed]

Hussein-Ali Montazeri named Raisi as one of the four persons involved in the 1988 executions of Iranian political prisoners.[21] Other persons were Morteza Eshraghi (Prosecutor of Tehran), Hossein-Ali Nayeri (Judge) and Mostafa Pourmohammadi (MOI representative in Evin).
