Operation Black Diamond. A local religious leader had recently been assassinated and the perpetrators had escaped from the scene using back roads not patrolled by Iraqi Security Forces. It was determined that in order to further secure the city from future terrorist attacks, all vehicle traffic must enter and exit the city through a single ECP checkpoint in which vehicles are searched for weapons and explosives. We conducted a 48-hour mission to destroy the back roads and thus channelizing all vehicle traffic through a single point of entry. The explosions consisted of multiple 40 lbs. cratering charges. The countdown on the last explosion is intentionally offset by 5 seconds in case a counterattack was synchronized with detonation.
