Iraq election continues to ignite unrest

Iraq has held elections, its fifth since the US-led invasion in 2003 which overthrew Saddam Hussein’s regime.
The government has portrayed this early election as a change to fulfil public demand for change, but protesters now fear that the results will be neither free nor fair.

The election is Iraq’s first since widespread protests erupted in 2019, during which more than 600 people were killed by security forces and armed groups. Protesters have gathered in the lead-up to this vote, saying that the election process is corrupt, with paramilitary wings of incumbent parties attacking opposition supporters. Shi’ite cleric Moqtada Al Sadr’s party is expected to grow its share of seats and possibly control of the government. Iraq’s Shi’ite groups have dominated government formation since 2003, but a low voter turnout suggests the population have little hope that this election will dislodge sectarian religious parties from power.
