Back in 2019, Someone I knew was just getting into guns, and just getting into hunting. I told him to get a 308 rifle for hunting because it was a very common round. He listened to the person working in the local gun store and got a 6.5 Creedmoor rifle instead. 2020 came and he could never find ammo for his gun that year and the year after that. 308 and 7.62x51 however, could still be found on the shelf of my local gun store even in the midst of the pandemic.

My area was the opposite. I could find 6.5 but not 308. The common calibers were impossible to find. The odd calibers were available.

San Antonio only had 17 hmr on the shelf. From now on, every time I think of getting a new caliber I’m stocking up on ammo first.

For hunting, I would have no problem with a 308. 6.5 creedmoor doesn’t really have an advantage over 308 until you get past 400 yards. I wouldn’t want to try to shoot something that far anyway because it would probably suffer if i did. Plus the 308 has a much longer barrel life. When ammo was more scarce, my local Walmart still had winchester white box in 308 and one or two other common calibers.

I have a caucasian uncle (I'm Vietnamese) who fought in the Vietnam War, married my aunt in the 70s, and later on brought our family to the US in 1994. Aside from his little backstory... I remember chilling at his house in Ohio in 1998ish and enjoying some jerky. He told me that the jerky was made from a deer that he shot 435 yards away from his backyard. As an 8 year old, it didn't register much in my little head. Now that I'm older, I realized how great of a shooter he was for nailing a deer 435 yards away with a 308 Model 70 and that damn thing didn't even have a scope. I remember the rifle that he showed like it was yesterday. He's also the reason why I shoot 308.

Caliber conversion kits can be useful for this too. Maybe not quite as effective but less expensive for those with a bit less available funding. A single shot 12 gauge with the right kit gives you a lot of caliber options

I am actually selling some of my guns. If evacuation becomes the most reasonable option, then only having enough guns that you can carry with you without sacrificing space in your bug-out vehicle without sacrificing space to carry your family, emergency provisions, etc... I was recently worried about being 'red-flagged' by my angry ex-wife, so I took my guns and put them in 'safe storage' at a friend's FFL gunshop. IT TOOK ME 2 TRIPS in my 4 door 5 passenger pickup truck to move all my guns. This is a problem. If a tsunami or hurricane posed justifiable reason for evacuating my home, I don't want to waste more than 10 minutes loading guns into my 'GOOD' (get out of dodge) vehicle. My only non-standard caliber guns are ones that were owned by 3 or 4 generations of my family. 22LR, 38/.357, 41, 44 revolvers. 410 bore, 20ga, 12ga shotguns. 22LR, 5.56, 30-30, .308, 30-06 rifles. My outlier is my M1 Carbine because I prefer it's lighter weight and 30 caliber round vs a typical 5.56 AR-15 and I own enough magazines and rounds for it to be combat effective for 3 complete patrol load-outs. Also consider - do you own at least 200 or more rounds for each chambering? If you only own 10 chamberings, that could be as little as 2000 rounds of ammo to load into your bug-out vehicle. If you own 40 different chamberings, that is 8,000 rounds minimum to load up while the flood is approaching. I'm selling my odd-ball caliber guns. Why have to evacuate and leave guns that may be pointed at me upon my return?

I've been getting more and more into buying various calibers because I like having some experience with a little bit of everything. Also your point is quite right. Always got ammo for something...most of the time anyway. Just got my first. 44 and I'm not having great luck with finding ammo but that's ok. As long as I can do a bit of shootin for now I'm happy.

The backup is a totally valid point. This year I took my normal bolt action 30-06 and the optic malfunctioned. Luckily I had taken my trusty AR10 in .308 and put some venison in the freezer.

AR-10’s are ridiculously heavy. It is good you had a .308 as a backup. Get a SCAR 17, or a POF Rogue or Revolution. You can even go with the new lightweight Ruger, if quality is not important to you. It is definitely cheaper. Then you won’t need a backup or a bolt gun. A lightweight semiautomatic in .308 is the ultimate rifle.

It's useful to 1000+ yards. Not as sexy as a 6.5 Creedmoor, but it retains more energy at range and reloading components are EVERYWHERE.

The cartridge is inherently very efficient and accurate, and moreover it is very easy to find powder, primer and bullets that work very well for .308. It's compatible with a huge range of weapons from single shots to mini-guns. It's also deadly efficient at taking out human threats, especially those behind barriers and wearing body armor even though armor that can stop a .308 round is in wide use. Most battle rifle rounds used worldwide in fact have ballistics very similar or only a little above that of the .308 Winchester, even the still very effective 7.62X54mm Russian cartridge.

It will still be relevant in broader terms for general hunting and shooting, but its days and range for long range are extremely limited. The military is running from 308 in all precision roles except the semi-auto DM platforms that seldom see use in anything over 400 yds anyway. I dont own a 6.5 Creedmoore, but have shot its ballistic twin, the 260 Remington for over 10 years now. If you arent impressed with its "Real World" results, its only because you havent done anything with it. There is a reason why the 308 is now segregated into its own class in PRS matches: because it gets the shit kicked out of it everywhere, every time. I love my 308s and will never be without one, but if you are shooting over 500 yards with one, you are at a significant disadvantage to say the very least. Thats not hyperbole, thats just plain facts.

Everything you said in this video is true, especially about the availability over most ammunition in podunk stores like in my area. I've been using the same 1985 Win. M70 carbine (20" barrel) in .308 since 1986, it's never let me down outside operator error. Keep up the great vids!

here in the UK the most popular deer cartridge is without doubt .243win closely followed by the .308win, personally I hand load for my .308 but you will always find shop ammo for these two cartridges, I have taken many deer with my .308 from 40lbs to well over 350lbs at ranges out to more than 250yds and never recovered a bullet, that says to me that the .308win is probably as good as it gets for any deer species at non deer sniper ranges

@bigc Black tip is the ONLY reason I would say to choose .30-06 over .308 as a cartridge. .30-06 black tip is nasty, standard .30-06 is just marginally better than .308 with a few drawbacks. The guns though. There is just something that draws me to the M1 Garand and the 1903 (a3 or a4).

In Canada, I used my .303 Lee Enfield for decades. It was with the full military stock (never sporterized) and iron sights; it never let me down and put a lot of venison in the freezer. As I got older, for some reason the rifle got heavier so I decided to finally spend some money and get a modern deer hunting rifle (Tikka T3). Being an old soldier, I decided on my old trusty 7.62x51 round as this is what we used in our FN C1s and C2s. I knew the .303 could ethically and humanely dispatch anything I hunted, and the .308 would do the same. Where I got to really appreciate having a .308 was during Covid and the subsequent ammo shortages. At places like Canadian Tire, they would be sold out of 6.5 Creedmore, .303 British and the like, however .308 was available in both 150 and 180 grain from various manufacturers. Consequently, I haven’t seen any .303 on the shelf for over a year now.

@piobmhor8529 - The way I see it, the .303 British cartridge is the "30-30" of Canada. That old-time cartridge which has been around forever but still gets the job done. If I remember correctly, when the Canadian Rangers finally got around to retiring their old .303 Lee-Enfield No. IV Mk. I rifles a few years back, they chose a Tikka bolt-action in .308 to replace it. Similar power levels; .303 slots in at about 90-95% the power of .308 Winchester in most loads. Fascinating history of the various Lee-Enfield rifles and the .303 British rimmed cartridge, too, but man alive they're sort of a pain to hand-load. If you can find components in the first place. It can be done, but my real problem is that I don't know the ins-and-outs of it like you guys up north do. You'll run into plenty of people who say that .303 British or .308 Winchester aren't enough thump for hunting the biggest, meanest game in Canada and Alaska, but tell that to the Canadian Rangers. They used .303s for decades and managed just fine. You need a premium bullet, but that's true of almost all cartridges when it comes to hunting large, disagreeable species of any kind anywhere. I'm a big hockey fan. So, what do you think? Is this the season Toronto finally figures it out? Or maybe Edmonton? Vancouver look hot right now, too... My beloved Chicago Blackhawks are rebuilding, so no cup ambitions just yet, but watching number one pick Connor Bedard is sure fun!

Today, choosing the .308 over the .303 is about the practicality. Whether in Canada or the US, the .303 ammo, brass and bullets are just not that plentiful as in days of old. And yes, the .303 does have its share of quirks as to reloading.... sizing only the neck of the brass being most notable. During the off & on ammo shortages of the past 15 or so years, .308 (and .30-06 and. 30-30 too) were somewhat more plentiful. Hey, I still love my No4 Mk1 Maltby, but reality is what it is.

30-30 is a popular hunting round here in the U.S.... during covid people were begging for just a few rounds to go hunting with. But I could go to the local walmart and get a box of .308 (had to go first thing in the morning though).

I can assure you gentleman that here in South Africa we hunt zebra, kudu, gemsbuck, eland, black and blue wildebeest, waterbuck, sable and roan with a .308 Winchester using a 150 gr bullet. Growing up hunting in PA, we pretty much used .308, 30-06, 30-30. All were great guns and calibers to use around the fields and woods. Ranges anywhere from under 100 yds upwards to 300 or maybe a little further. Definitely would recommend someone having a .308 and the 30-06 in the mix

I agree 100% I stocked up on Barnaul steel case 308 for about 35 cents a round about a year ago. I decided to ditch my 6.5 grendel and focus on 5.56 and 308 for rifles.

No phone calls are made and nothing is submitted to the FBI. If the ATF wants to know what guns you have bought they have to go flip through all those 4473 forms by hand and find your name. Also what if he bought those as a private sale?…..

Great video, and a good point. A long time ago, when I bought my only true deer hunting rifle, I bought a Remington 700 in 30-06. I was also considering 308, and it was close. Back then, 308 was more of the new kid and 06 was more established. If I were to buy another one now, it might be in 308.

I got the 16 inch ruger sfar for 900 6.8 lbs with a thick barrel. 500 rounds down the tube no probs. Love the rifle first 308 and it feels just like my ar 15. Even the recoil is more simmiler to 556 then another 308 rifle. Very light shooter

@JackOfAllTrades Prepping lol y thank you I was waiting for a better, more affordable pof revolution, and I'm just surprised it was a ruger to put tht much time and engineering into an ar10 hope it becomes the standard. It is soooo small and handy. Another great part about it is it takes ar 15 parts. Charging handles, handgaruds, stocks, pistol grips, triggers packs, buffer tubes same size. Like it truly is an ar15 just throwing out 308 pills. MAC here on youtube has a 2 vids about it. Highly recommend if u can get ahold of one

Inside of 600 yards, 308 is the best performance to value cartridge that’s available everywhere. It’s not going anywhere and will cover 95% of all civilian applications. It can go out to 800-1K if needed but it’s just not as effective as the newer cartridges like 6.5 Creedmore. If you constantly chase the best performance you will never be able to stockpile ammo unless you are a millionaire. Training is far more important and knowing your rifle, optic and dope.

Still have my Rem 788 that I got in '74. Remington core-lokt in either 165 or 180 grain always works. Never had to do much tracking. Always accurate, always reliable.

Love all your videos you guys do, all the time and money you put into these videos is much appreciated, when I got started in long range shooting from 100 yards to 1k , a friend told me to start with a 308 instead of a 6.5 creedmoor because it would teach me more how to read windage elevations vs the 6.5 creedmoor because of ballistic coefficients, once I became decent with the 308 I acquired a 6.5 creedmoor along with my 308, for some reason I still enjoy my 308 a little more than my 6.5 creedmoor, which I have both in bolt and the semi auto platform, Barry would be proud of you both and God bless

Over here in Sweden 308 is the most used cartridge for hunting by far. We hunt everything from roe deer up to moose/brown bear with it. It does it all without any problems.

Since 2006 any pistol or rifle I have bought has been only in nato calibers. 9mm, 45, 556, 762X51 and of course 22LR. My first bolt gun was a Remington 700 ADL in .308 with a 2X8 Leupold variable and a Bianchi sling. No frills, no modern updated stuff. Just a solid bolt gun useful for just about anything using projectiles ranging from 125g to 180g depending on my target selection. Excellent video fellas!

i am a big proponent of having multiple hunting rifles in various calibers. these last few years have really driven home the importance of having a variety of firearms. at times, i have had difficulty finding every cartridge. by having so many different calibers, i have always been able to hunt. the 308 is a long-time favorite of mine and has taken many different species all over the lower 48. now that i moved to alaska i still believe my 308s will be a staple in my hunting line-up.

@@Maddog3060 Bolt actions are the strongest actions and can handle high power rounds like the 7mm mag and 300 Win mag. Both capable of reaching out and knocking down an elk or moose. If you are going with a bolt action why not use the high calibers they were made for. .308 in bolt or lever are great deer hunting guns. But for follow up shots a semi-auto is best. Don't waste your money on anything other than an AR platform when going semi-auto. The AR is proven to be accurate and reliable. Just my opinion, I'm sure others will disagree.

I love the Hornady Precision Hunter in .308 with the 178 ELDX. I have killed a bunch of hogs with this load, it has also taken several deer out to 300 yd with it. A .308 is a must for any gun person and or a hunter. One of my favorites is my Tavor 7, compact with a 18” barrel.

The last 5 years or so I’ve had an obsession with large frame gas guns and put together a gucci parts 20” .308 Win. Furthest I’ve gone is ~750 yards and it definitely moves the plate. Also 308 recoils and will exploit mistakes, I’ve learned a lot about fundamentals of marksmanship, wind calling, and recoil management shooting 308 gas gun. If you can print a 5-shot group below 1 minute on a gas gun, you’re doing something right.

I built an AR-10 in .308 a couple of years ago and it’s become my primary deer rifle. It’s definitely heavier than my AR-15, especially with the 6x optic I’m running and with a 25 rnd mag, but I like having the buffer tube and gas impingement for recoil management, and I reduce weight by running 5 rnd mags when I hunt from an elevated platform. I like having the option of long range fire if I need it. If I’m hunting heavier cover, I go back to my trusty Marlin 336c 30/30. Great video guys.

@kevinhart46 As a Canadian, can I ask what big animals you think a .308 cannot take? I hunt moose, elk and black bear with my .308 and 180 grain bullet. Our Canadian Rangers are supplied with .308 Win with Nosler Accubond 180 grain and they hunt polar bears. It's moose season right now and I'm leaving tomorrow to drive up north with my tag. Home defense? Who in the world is using a 30 caliber for self defense?

I bought a DPMS LR-308 back when very few companies made AR's in .308. I use it for deer hunting here in MN, but wouldn't question taking it out west for Elk or Mule deer. Great rifle.

Glad to hear you guys are back-tracking on the .308 Win. There will always be a place for it in civilian hands. At distances 350 yards and in, I'd rather have the .308 when hunting. As to Col. Cooper's "Patrol Rifle" concept, take a look at Mossberg's 7.62 MVP rifles. I have one with a rear mounted 1-10 LVPO mounted. I have it handy whenever I go out gathering wood in the Spring, in case a bear takes an interest in what I'm doing.

I've standardized all my firearms. 9mm luger, 223/556, 308 win, 12 ga, and 300 win mag. I've thought of this ahead of time and I'm glad it's being mentioned now. I do have a 10mm auto, and I want a 45-70 eventually, but ive basically standardized my weapons caliber wise.

I agree with you, boys. I just got a SIG Cross and chose .308 instead of 6.5 Creedmore just because the ammunition was so much more available and cheaper. Within my ranges there is no ballistic difference. The Cross is so doggone handy, it's what is in my truck daily. Keep up the good work.

Been deer hunting since the 80s in the UK. First rifle was a Parker Hale 1100lw 308w with a Pecar 6x45 and israeli Samson 150gr sp.Still hunting now with a 308w Browning x bolt , Swarovski z8i 2.3 - 18x56 with Winchester Powerpoint 150gr sp from Red deer to Fallow and Roe it does the job.

I had a custom built remington 700 .308 Built it for long distance shooting. I went out to 800 plus yards. Even at those distances it was putting huge dents in quarter inch steel plate.... I wouldn't wanna get hit by it at any distance... that's a bad day for anyone... and I believe it's still one of the go to rounds for most swat teams or at least it use to be...

I recently put together a 5.7 lb .308 AR DPMS rifle, magnesium receiver, titanium bcg, carbon fiber furniture, carbon fiber wrapped barrel. With the scope and suppressor it weighs just 7 lbs. it’s my Gucci rifle. I still have several backup rifles for just in case. When I go hunting I toss my 7.62x39 AR with a box of ammo in the trunk. I learned the hard way when a scope broke/ lost zero from dropping a rifle years ago.

I bought .308 rifles for my boys for their first deer rifles. Remington Cor-Lokts have had a lot of 1-shot kills for Missouri Bucks. Started using .308 when I was gifted my grandpa’s pre ‘64 Model 70 Featherweight, it’s my primary hunting rifle.

Years ago I was doing some hunting in Mississippi and stopped a little store to pick up supplies. I took several rifles with me but this little store in the middle of nowhere had probably 3 boxes of 32 Winchester Special. I inherited that particular rifle from my grandfather and I bought them all. They said there was an older fella there that shot that particular rifle but he had died and they'd been on the shelf since.

There are so much calibers that are better for certain job, but .308 Win is the Swiss knive. Also for reloading it's a very thankful cartridge. There is a brochure for new hunters by RWS in Germany, telling everything about guns, calibers, projectiles and hunting. The .308 Win is that medicore, that ist described exactly where the booklet is exactly halved by it's pages. I love it. :-) It is the VW Golf of calibers.

Colonel Cooper's idea was for a compact bolt-action rifle or carbine being used to take game of up to 400 kilograms (~ 880 lbs.) out to at least 400 yards. He chambered it in .308 Winchester. It gets the job done!

No kidding on that. I have an M1A and my wife has a Ruger bolt action and I can hold the M1A on target much easier than I can her bolt action thanks to the heavier weight even with the polymer stock on it. The one thing I do need to do is shim up the barrel band a bit tighter, it's pretty sloppy.

I went from my old Marlin lever in .35 Rem to my H&R Handi-Rifle in .308 Win a few years back. It's hard hittin', but it's never let me down. When I went to work at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant I found out they had a "pro plan" with Springfield Armory. I couldn't wait to get my dream gun: an M1A SOCOM 16. I topped it with a Vortex Crossfire II Scout scope, so I now have a great "backup" .308. Great video discussion guys!!

Surprised the Zastava M77 wasn’t part of this conversation. Recently got one to fill the “need a .308 battle rifle” hole in my heart and it really is a pragmatist’s weapon. In its stock format and an optic mounted on the rock-solid side rail, i can see it being a fantastic do-it-all type of weapon and definitely rings the AR-10 bell a little bit for me (in terms of function to fill). Of course, that stock format comes with a 20-inch barrel and there’s quite a bit of chunk to the receiver so handy it is not, but it isn’t a heck of a lot harder to control than an AKM. I am a big advocate for just training with it, having a good sling, and eating your Wheaties haha. Also - often not-talked-about point of, once you get out of the realm of 5.56/.223 & 7.62x39, the prospective applications of a caliber widen in scope. As such, there’s a lot of variation in what .308 ammunition is available to a consumer, and the M77 being easily gas-adjustable is a big deal when you talk about being able to shoot something “forever.”

All those people who complain 308 has too much recoil should try high velocity lightweight 308 rounds with 100-115 grains. Can get velocities 3200-3500 fps and it exploded whatever it touches. Makes 556 look like the pee shooter it is. With the lighter ammo it is still heavier than a 556 loadout but not so bad and so much more power. A laser beam out to 400 meters

I have a .308 Remington 600 Mohawk, with a vent rib. I have had it more years than I can remember. For all the reasons you mentioned the Mohawk is a great little rifle. I dispersed a lot of my firearm collection to various family members, including my 1946 Mod 94 Winchester in 30-30. I kept the 600, as well as my .357 Rossi model 92 lever. I still have some of the other "desirable firearms". But at almost 70 I haven't hunted in a few years, but I'm setup ok. I just found out I can do the Handicap Hunter thing with a partner. "Never give up, NEVER SURRENDER!"

My father always shot a 7 mm Remington Magnum I've owned a few Magnum caliber rifles myself but my first centerfire hunting rifle was a 308 Winchester. My grandfather was a hunter but more of a gun guy and hearing about firearms and hunting from him it became very apparent to me at relatively young age while hunting with my grandfather that calibers like 30-30, 357, and 44 mag were sufficient you don't really always need that much punch. Shot placement is everything. I've gone down the caliber wormhole and have even hunted large game with center fire handguns and to this day I can't tell you why sometimes you get a one shot drop and sometimes you don't. I've seen big Mule deer run for miles after taking a 338 win mag and I've seen one drop like a sack of potatoes from a 10mm. Well it also helps to never shoot spooked game when they don't see it coming everything usually goes better. None the less I can't part with 308 winchester I've owned several rifles in 308 Winchester and I've always returned back to the cartridge. I currently have no plans of changing or adopting another new cartridge 308 Winchester just sufficiently fulfills a practicality niche that no other caliber can. Not to mention if your on a budget and not looking to spend all your money on features like porting or muzzle brakes you can put together a fine rifle for under 1000$ in 308 Winchester and it will shoot well. It's funny I've handed my light weight 308 to 300 win mag shooters who never shoot guns that aren't ported and they always look shocked at the recoil.

.308 has been my hunting go-to since 1972. Even taken deer with 7.62x51 mil-surp when the soft points ran out. Killed just as quick as the 150 sp's. I've never hunted elk with it but WITHIN range I have no doubt it would drop them.

Over here you will find 6,5×55 and 30-06 in all stores. But most times 308 too. My favorite number two is 308, but my first choise over that is my Ruger No:1 in 375H&H.

I’m telling you I love my 308. It may be that it was my first firearm I bought myself. I just love it. I know it inside and out and it just works. My brother always loved his 250-3000 savage but I think it’s for the same reason. That was his rifle that he knew inside and out and he could shoot the fly off a horses ass at 200 yards with it so why wouldn’t he like it. But I’ve shrunk my groups in half since I’ve been hand loading my cartridges. But great video guys.

I have an ar10. I regularly shoot m80 ball and 168gr jhp. It's pretty accurate with both out to 300yds which is my ranges limit. My thinking is ammo commonality along with the power(bears can sometimes be a problem) makes it a good compliment to my other firearms.

The best rifle, cartridge and bullet are what works for you. I'm a southeastern Canadian and the .308 Win fits all my needs. We have very thick woods so all my shots have been under 200 yards. I've been using the exact same set up for 15 years; a Remington 700 CDL in .308 Win with Federal Fusion bonded soft point. 150 grain for white tail deer, coyotes and wolves, 180 grain for elk, moose and black bear. I can do even smaller grain too for varmint. I'm an average size man with a slightly smaller frame, 178lbs and 5'10'' so the lower recoil, smaller rifle and action are all perfect for me.

one of the best finds out there: go to diamndback firearms and get one of their preassembled db10 uppers in 308 or even better, a 20" 6.5creed; (for $450 to $500, including bolt); grab one of their stripped lower for $100 (to your FFL), it uses a standard buffer tube for an ar15, grab their buffer and spring on the site also, and a LPK, or even better, go buy a gesieele trigger, and order your favorite stock and grip-- and you can throw it all together for under $800. They offer them as complete rifles for $1800 to $2200; but if you just build them yourself, they are WAY cheaper; less than half price. They use the KAC SR25 receiver spec; (so it has an angle cut like an Armalite, and Not the curved receiver of the dpms LR308's). Eric and Chad, if you're reading this, you guys should definitely build one, or at least call them; I'm sure they would love to send you one for free. They are stupid accurate and they make their own barrels.

My deer rifle is a Remington 700 .308 made in 1975. I have access to several .30-30s made by Winchester and Marlin, a .270 Remington 700, and a .30-06 Remington 700. They are all great but I still choose the .308.

I got a rem 700 in .308 for Christmas about 15 years ago. I couldn't decide what chambering I wanted, so I just asked for the .308. It's a great gun. A few years ago I let my brother in law borrow it. I wasn't there, and he apparently just let everyone at camp shoot it as much as they wanted. Most of those guys were the 7rem mag type. The next year that we went out there, three of the guys had bought.308s and said that it was because they loved mine. I always thought that was cool. This was pre 6.5 creedmore hysteria, but still.

Got my stainless takedown 10/22 for small game, a 1969 .308 Browning BAR, made in Belgium and i think a grade 2 and a matching 12 gauge A5 shotgun, both semi auto for everything else… thanks grandpa for making great choices in firearms back in the day!

You said no one nowadays no one would build a fancy custom .30/06 precision gun, but I did last year and love it. If you handload the round it is much more capable than the .308 Win (which is a round that I still like very much and have many guns chambered in.) People tend to forget when the .308 was designed to replicate the .30/06 round in a shorter case, the old .30/06 rounds were limited by the (mostly) military rifles they were built for. That's why if you fire modern .30/06 rounds in older rifles like a Garand it often will go BOOM! With modern guns and propellants and bullets, the .30/06 outpaces the .308 Win and is right on the heels of many .300 Win Mag offerings.

I loved that rifle, unfortunately, I traded it for an M1 carbine, thinking I needed a semi-automatic rifle. This was in the mid 70’s when I was still young and stupid. Last year, the first .308 categorized gun I got was the French FR-F2 (Thanks to Ian-senpai), but I've been advised that I should only use 7.62 NATO specific ammo in it, cause apparently.308 Winchester is hotter than 7.62 NATO, so I had to give away 3 boxes/60 rounds of .308 to my friend for his Aero AR-10

I agree completely. My nephew has a pretty cool old rifle he hunts with chambered in .257 Roberts. And I have found ammo on the shelf for it precisely one time in my life. And I look every time i'm at a gun store. Thankfully 6.5 Creedmoor is becoming more available but I almost always find .308, .30-06, .223/5.56, and the normal assortment of handgun rounds.

There are a few out there.. My bolt guns are 30-06; but my DB10 is 308. You can build a one for under $800.. or $50 more, you can build one in 20" 6.5creed. Pretty incredible rifles; especially for the price. (I mean a db10, not the 30-06 semi auto's out there)

I love that SST round, I did crack a bolt using it in a G3. Fun note, it didn’t malfunction. The rifle was covered and fixed for free.
