I love how Ian's mud test as based and eye opening as it was, completely negates every single dirt, mud, ice test taken before and since with AKs lol. I remember MAC from military arms literally dumping dirt into a mag, opened the dust cover and poured dirt into action, and loaded rounds that were sitting in dirt into a 74...and fired every round. Because ARs never shit the bed..right? Both are very reliable, and proven platforms. As is always said. AKs are dramatically more accurate than people are lead to believe. Just like the AR is dramatically more reliable than people are lead to believe.

Garand Thumbs dirt and mud test opened my eyes to AK vs AR. As in he dumped mud and dirt in 3 different DI AR'S INTO THE OPEN CHAMBERS and they fired every single round while ALL the AK's or any other long stroke piston design shit the bed after exactly 1 round.

Being from a Great Plains state, im an AR10 guy. Theres simply too much vast open land for an intermediate caliber. As such, my go to defensive rifle is an Hk Mr762 topped with a Vortex Razor HD-E Gen3 1-10x optic. The AK and AR are both epic rifles! My only gripe is the GWOT trend of ever decreasing barrel length. You literally said it in video. Speed kills. The 5.56 looses its outstanding lethality very very quickly when velocity drops because it simply doesnt have the mass. With the 11 inch SBRs people are geeking out over these days, youre getting 7.62x39 muzzle velocity but with a bullet that weighs less than half! It simply makes no sense to me.

I called myself an "AK guy" ever since 2015, when I bought a Russian Saiga in 7.62x39 as my 18th birthday present to myself, and the first firearm I ever owned. Still have it to this day. I stood by this stance only until around the last year or two, when I looked around and started to notice that almost all the good imports were gone, and most of the American made AKs on the market are crap. I thought to myself, "The entire purpose of owning an AK is to have a stupid reliable, combat-accurate workhorse. If it's built like crap, what's the point?" In the last year or so, I found myself spending more time steering people towards ARs and telling them all about which AKs are junk or otherwise not worth one's time than I did telling them what good AK brands are out there. The few that still exist are out of most folks' budgets. Today, even though I still would pick up my Saiga over any other rifle on Earth to go fight with, now, I just call myself a "gun guy."

Really depends on where you live and how you treat it. If you live in the east or south east lots of trees and hills and humidity and you leave the gun in the truck 24/7 I would trust the AK far more. That 7.62x39 round is gonna be better in the trees and even urban areas and if you had to shoot through a car door or something. Plus if it just gets forgotten about and not taken ideal care of in the humidity and stuff that AK will be better off. You just have to have a good ak to start with. Lots of crappy ones have been sold here.

I've seen MANY ARs at the range have problems (as opposed to the AKs). I know there are way more reasons and causes for the AR having trouble (a bad builder, gas system issues, different ammo/cycling issues, the losing of tiny parts in the field, improper lubrication or cleaning, etc.). AK problems seem to be relegated to VERY CHEAP companies putting out bad guns or (rarely) a very bad home build gun. Personally, i enjoy the weight, feel, and sights of the AK. It's different than the lighter AR that often is topped with some optic. Some people prefer steel frame handguns to polymer. Others prefer pump shotguns to semi-auto. The great thing about America is you can have them all.

The reason ars fail a lot is because the ones 99.999% of people buy are junk. I think the AKM is a great platform that has been battle proven and it’s reliable. With that said due to Russia being so poor they have literally not developed the platform at all. The ak12 is stupid. In an era of modern warfare with tech that operators use the AK is way behind the curve and it’s not debatable it’s simply a fact now.

I'm an "AK guy", but I choose AR for self defense. I'm an "AK guy" because I just really enjoy them as designs and because they have more "soul" that the AR. Yes, the ARE is more modular, but that's a reason it's just more utilitarian and it makes each one less special. What you are saying here is like "are you really a Porsche /Ferrari guy if you commute in a benz? Of course! Because it's about what tickles your fancy, not necessarily what is the most practical. If I was in eastern Europe, I would probably choose the AK. In America, choosing the AR is a no brainer. Is the AR more accurate? Not enough to matter for my actual martial uses, but it could matter in some situations. Yes, I also prefer 5.45 over 7.67x39...but this is becoming less tolerable because of ammo cost. I am stocked up on 7n6 still, but only for so long. I hope that what is happening is people realizing that AR vs AK was a false dichotomy....it's all about AR AND AK! I'm a gun guy - started out building my own Romy G fixed stock and underfolder from parts kits as a broke ass college kid. Grew up, budget expanded, got into ARs. I love them both for what they do. This is the way. I like 7.62x39 for close quarters, shorter ranges, urban environments. Good for punching holes in cover. I like the AR for more for refined work at distance because I can easily run a 2 stage trigger, optic hight is much closer to bore, bla bla bla. Got my neice out on the range and she also loves them both as well. It's good to love and cherish your tools, treat them well, and have them serve you for decades of enjoyment.

This is the biggest factor in my opinion. The AK will always be superior to the AR inside of 100 yards. Idc if it’s 5.45 or 7.62x39. 5.56 zips through 5.45 tumbles violently. 7.62x39 was designed to penetrate barriers like brick and concrete. Can’t hide. Unless maybe you’re on the other side of a thick engine block. Far as I know I haven’t seen Eric or Chad with a ZenitCo build of any sort.

For many, AKs are akin to something like a "Goth phase". They're outside the norm, different, exciting. You get to belong to your own weird subset of gun society. You get an excuse to put weird anime stickers on your guns. But like the goth phase, it's usually temporary. Eventually you'll come to your senses and grow up into a sensible adult and return to the tried and true, respectable AR platform. As you age you'll look fondly at the AK youth, reminiscing on your own rebellious gun days. You'll chuckle to yourself and say "they'll grow out of it. We were all young and silly once. I know i was" OR: ..... you'll rebel for life and run for Congress.... and I'll vote for you in a heartbeat! Viva LA Herrera!

I have an original CMMG Mutant and it’s had thousands of suppressed rounds through it as a thermal night hog gun. It’s rode in truck, side by side and on four wheeler, and never an issue at all. I also have a KS-47 and I’m on my 3rd bolt in less than a thousand rounds, yes it’s a lil less heavy but the Mutant just keeps rollin. Don’t get it wrong, I love my 77gr 556 also but 200 yards and in I’ll pick my CMMG over the 556.

I feel like this is more an argument of 7.62x39 vs 5.56x45. Not really a good argument for or against the platform. I prefer the AK platform for reliability and simplicity but i like the 5.56 cartridge for most use cases. That preference is made up of two different arguments. The platform and the cartridge you use in that platform. The platform is not specifically defined by the cartridge it was designed to use. There is a big movement in the US with 5.56 AKs because people like that combination and it’s not just because of the import issue.

I know guys who are AK guys and literally the sight of an AR melts their soul and vice versa. I'm a hedger and I like them both a lot for widely different reasons, most of which have to do with nothing technical. I'm hoping never to be in a position to have to use either one for anything other than going to the range, getting to the mountains with my sons, and most of all having useless albeit absurdly passionate debates with other middle aged dudes that have never been in a war or had to protect anyone's life. End of the world, Book of Eli type situation, have to choose one rifle to grab, I'd be insane to choose anything but my AR for the exact reasons in this video. Outside that, I honestly don't even know why we have the argument AK v. AR anymore. Have to choose one, go with AR, if possible to have both, you're missing out if you don't have at least one AK. When I graduated from high school in 1988 there was some legitimate parity between the two systems. Since Ivan Drago was a thing, neither the Soviets nor anyone else has really done any real innovation on the 47 or 74 platforms or ammo. Partly why I still think AKs remain cool, they're like a time capsule, have that whole Swayze/Sheen Red Dawn vibe to them. Point about ammo is definitely true. I bought some 5.45 about 5 years back for my AK74 and I've actually watched it appreciate faster than gold past couple of years. It's a great round but it really hasn't moved along at all since 1974. I almost don't want to shoot it because I don't know when or if it will ever be available again so it will probably rot while I choose to shoot the ubiquitous 556 when I can get out and shoot a rifle. It is really a smooth shooting round in some ways better than the 556 but 545 probably going to go the way of the.30 carbine.

Yes. Yes I am an AK guy. I've mentioned many times I feel the AR has two fundamental flaws... difficulty with magazine retention when inserting a full mag on a close bolt, sometimes can be problematic; and if an AR does jam and you can't open the bolt, you can't field strip it and there is no cleaning rod to ram a stuck casing out. These are non issues with the Kalash platform. Is the AR a bit more accurate? Yes. Is it more modular? Yes. Is it more reliable? Depends on the situation. Not all of us are pouring mud into the opening on our AK's... that is not a practical test. It does prove a point, but also it is much less likely to occur than trying to insert a full AR mag on a closed bolt. I've had multiple AR's and multiple AK's... i've had jams and issues with both of them, but I can always get an AK back up and running much faster than I can get an AR back in the game. Therefor I'll take an AK. AND lets not forget there are plenty of 5.56 AK's so don't say ammo is an issue, because I own a few 5.56 variants. And 7.62 AR's are just.... sacrilege. Silly, frankly. I too prefer the 5.45 round over all three.

You can also navigate thick brush easier with a smaller gun and still get ballistics capable of dropping deer sized game. Palmetto state armory always has the ammo available and its not to bad if you buy in bulk on sale you can get rounds for about 70 cent a shot. 110 Vmax but my hornady Sub-X are more expensive

I think the AR is the better rifle, but the AK puts a bigger grin on my face at the range. My home defense rifle is a Colt M4 carbine, mainly because of low recoil and the wife and kids may need it as well, but my 16" Vepr 308 sits right next to the M4 just in case.
