@ThisNewHandleSystemSucks6 жыл бұрын
Michael Coulter That would be very cool, but I doubt they would ever consider it. They would be destroying a very expensive machine gun. The thing with these AK and AR meltdowns is the lower reciever is the reigstered machine gun, and they can just put that with whatever upper they want to meltdown. Therefore only destroying the upper and not the full auto lower. They can't do that with an M14 since they don't separate into an upper and lower reciever.

@MaximRecoil6 жыл бұрын
He'd probably die of old age before a Tommy gun would fail. He already tried the meltdown test with an AR-style 9mm submachine gun, and he eventually ran out of ammunition (over 5,000 rounds). He couldn't kill it because the 9mm bullet is too slow to generate much heat, plus the action is very simple; it doesn't even have a gas system or breech-locking system (it's straight blowback, like most submachine guns are). Compared to an AR, a Thompson submachine gun is built like a tank. It is all steel, weighs about 11 pounds, is straight blowback, fires a bullet that's about 400 to 500 FPS slower than a 9mm (.45 ACP; about 835 FPS for the standard 230-grain GI load), plus the barrel has cooling fins. If you can't kill an AR-style 9mm SMG, you definitely won't be able to kill a Thompson SMG.

@Cleetis McDougall I thought the same thing, not having a constant flow of ammo "drums heat up a gun faster" and the breakdowns allow the gun to cool down. I'm sticking with my VEPR. I carried a M16 for a year in IRAQ and the AR/M16 design jams up fast. Drop it in mud then see what you have.

Holy crap! The recoil on this gun is amazing!

I wonder if it worked due to a few speculative factors: 1)-*SBRs* have less barrel surface contacting the bullet for as long, less total friction means less heat, powder burn taking place outside the muzzle equals less powder burn inside barrel under pressure. 2)-*The AK round* has a lower operating pressure than the AR round. The overall power is greater, but the lower speed and greater diameter equals less friction over a greater surface area. Historically longer faster skinnier bullets wear out barrels in less time than slower, wider, shorter bullets that use less surface area per speed per mass. The AK round is short for it's grain weight and slow for it's ft. lbs, and produces less pressure. That equals more barrel life all other things being equal. 3)- *The DI system* might pour more waste heat into the receiver, but it concentrates far less of it in the handguard and near the barrel. AKs and piston ARs concentrate a lot of heat out at the barrel where the barrel usually fails. DI in general fails more easily than pistons, but as a total system it's simple, easy to fix and spreads the heat out. If the tube used a heat sink compressor style, then it'd last even longer and we might see the waste heat lead to bad cook offs and the receiver might get too hot to function by causing other kinds of failures. But when combined with a lower pressure round, the DI system might be a good choice. I'm honestly not sure. 4)- *the rail isn't combustible*. When you've used AKs they usually have wood out front that eventually lights on fire and keeps the heat from dissipating but instead increase rapidly. Similarly you've done an AR meltdown where the handguard caught on fire. Rails don't do this. 5)- *barrel contour* I don't know what contour barrel this has, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's thicker than a typical AK, I didn't see any droop or loss of structural integrity at all. 6)- *metallurgy* When we've seen ARs fail, it's either the gas tube or the barrel is too thin and the steel gives out, droops, increases friction further, then fails. With AKs that failed, it's usually the trunion fails and the rifle loses headspace, or the barrel droops, often after the handguard caught on fire. This AR seems to have a stronger connection between the barrel and receiver than the AKs that fail do. Is this due to a stronger design or do we just have better metallurgy in our manufacturing processes? I have no idea. 7)- *AK mag swaps are slower.* This adds time, which means less heat dissipation per round count. So heat builds up more in less time and can't escape, keeping the weapon within heat tolerances, leading to a failure. so taking this all into account, maybe what needs to be tested next is a good quality AK with an SBR barrel, a metal rail out front that's got a heavier contour barrel and the state of the art forged trunnion, and a respected high-heat high tensile strength steel barrel. Run the AK round and the AK mags, but get rid of flamable guards and reduce other failure points listed above.

Hopefully +IV8888 will address your issues and pin this to the top. Best post I've seen on this test. Just because you're using an AK round does not make this an oranges-oranges test.
@ravissary796 жыл бұрын
Terry Clapp thank you. After thinking about it some more though I'm not sure if I was right about the AK round and barrel life I'd need to do more research. In theory increases diameter equals more friction, but that friction is also spread out over more surface and more mass. Longer skinnier bullets concentrate fraction by more surface traveling over less surface. What I'm REALLY curious about now is a full auto garand system by comparison. Whether it's an m2 or an AC556 I think it'll do great for a few hundred and then it will start having friction problems: so much steel rubbing on so much steel.

ravissary79 I also see mid length gas tubes go before the carbine length!! You think its cause the mid length is longer and get hotter? Just a thought!!! Seems the guns that run the longest are sbr's and carbine or shorter gas tubes!!

Great video as always bro, but again I will plead with you to have a camera down range focused on a popular silhouette type of ar500 steel Target. It would be really fun to see if it eventually dented the Target or what the outcome was. Just use that same silhouette metal Target for all of your meltdown videos, it would be a real addition to these videos!!

Agreed, and I also think they should *always* mount an optic to try and beat them up - preferably something cheap for the laughs as it loses zero or stops working. Trijicons etc would make it, so would be boring. If you're going to go through that much ammo, may as well throw in as many things as you can into the mix.

Jose A. Romo I agree but you gotta pay for something that bulletproof. During the range days it runs full auto ALL DAY and all CMMG does is dump a bottle of water down it to rapidly cool it for the next in line. Their engineering is next level and not a single part is "mil spec" off the shelf palmetto parts. I can't afford them, but if I could, I would get one without thinking.
@JoseARomo-qv5fk6 жыл бұрын
Broken Medic That actually reminded me of somethimg my grandpa told me they used to do with the AKs in Angola. He said when they were in the middle of battle and the AKs overheated, they'd just pour some water over the barrel to cool it. Sometimes they'd have to pee on them if they didn't have enough water. And they would continue to run just fine. Well anyway, I would buy one if I could. They're certainly very nicely made rifles. I just can't afford that right now, so I'll have to stick to my $600 PSA freedom rifle

This was the best sales video for this gun. I am very interested in this firearm and you’ve just proven its value. Remember, the cyclic rate, it’s probably why you had issues with the drum. It’s all about the spring. I think if you were to measure the cyclic rate of a fully automatic AK-47 compared to this gun, I think this gun has a much higher cyclically. What about the gas block? I believe the new variant has it pinned.

One thing's for sure, a 1911 wouldn't melt like the plastic Glock did. I would expect it to go maybe 20,000 rounds at least, i.e., they would probably run out of ammo longer before it failed. A gun that would probably last indefinitely in such a test would be the Star Megastar .45 ACP; 50 ounces empty (about 2½ times as heavy as a Glock 19 and 10 to 12 ounces heavier than a 1911), all steel.
